The latest national report into so-called party drugs in Australia indicates that ecstasy is getting less pure and drug users are finding it harder to get.

But experts believe drug users may just be using a new synthetic drug instead.

The Ecstasy and Related Drugs Reporting System (ERDRS) annually surveys 700 regular ecstasy users from across Australia about their drug habits.

This year for the first time the drug mephedrone - or meow meow, as it is known - has featured significantly.

ERDRS principal investigator in Victoria, Paul Dietze, says it is concerning.

"It may well be that ... as they're reporting that the purity and availability of ecstasy has been declining, this new drug has come in and people are reporting taking it because it gives them the desired effects that they are after," he said.

Mr Dietze says very little is known about the synthetic chemical, which has been linked to deaths overseas.

"We are seeing relatively large proportions of the samples in Victoria and Tasmania reporting use of the drug [mephedrone].

"In Tasmania people who were part of the survey actually reporting using it with reasonable frequency."

The Australian Drug Foundation's Geoff Munro says mephedrone has been brought to their attention over the past year.

He says right now very little is known about the substance.

"Mephedrone has been reputedly associated with several deaths in the UK and Europe, perhaps up to five, but other drugs may have been implicated in those deaths as well," he said.

"Because it is so new we don't know much about the short-term and longer-term effects."

The ERDRS survey also indicates cocaine use is still on the rise throughout the country, while the use of crystal methamphetamine has continued to fall.

The ABC are a bit behind the 8 ball...

All reports lead towards a decline in it's use in recent times, ever since the UK ban and lot's of mephedrone busts in Australia. Friends who club have told me it is nowhere near as available as it was at the start of the year.

The part about deaths linked to this substance is also total bullshit. No deaths have been proven to be caused solely by mephedrone. Some toxicology reports even proved that people thought to have died from mephedrone, never even had it in their system.

Many in the scene would report Meth use on the increase as well as cocaine.

Media beat up.

I'd like to know who they were surveying...

Umm since when is mephedrone even in the same league as MDMA?

I found it quite close to MDMA when dosed orally, but there's not much around anymore since the crackdowns at the beginning of the year, so it's neither here nor there.

As usual, the media are a good year behind on what's actually going on.

It is looking like this summer may be the return of the Summer of love. I'm not calling the end of the drought just yet but there are more and more pockets of plury people at each party I attend of late. I have far more faith in the population now that it appears that market pressures have cause a resurgence of MDMA. It could have easily gone completely to shit if people continued to neck any old rubbish for a night out.

I don't know how many deaths you could seriously contribute to mephedrone but you only have to see a case of blue knee (or amputation) to know it is a shit drug. Personally I get such a shocking headache from the stuff that even the smell of it causes me to dry retch.

There definitely is a small resurgence of MDMA throughout the east coast and hopefully it continues to pick up pace. The idiots who were munching anything and everything have started to wise up and the importers have found it harder and harder to move bad product.

I have multiple confirmations of MDMA crystal and more recently the green elephant pills (lab confirmed European imports 171mg MDMA). All very good signs, but you just never know what may happen until we are in the midst of a full on flood. The Australian party scene needs millions of doses of MDMA for this summer to reach what I would call a summer of love. Only time will tell...

Im not sure when the journalists wrote this article but they are a tad behind (few years) LOL 4mmc is not popular at all anymore. Its harder to come by than most illicit substances thesedays due to the tight importation regulations. It will never replace MDMA but i can see many people substituting it with 4mmc if its available to them.

Just to clarify 4mmc is not on the rise at all. I have friends owning RC businesses overseas and they all report to me that 4mmc is quite outdated. Been banned in the UK for quite a few months now and China has banned there precursors as well (the main manufacturer of RC's). Even most of us cant keep up with the newest n latest RC's that are coming out everyday let alone the journalists.

Sorry to sort of derail the thread, but does anyone hazzard to guess what are some of the common adulterants that are now in 'MD' caps. It used to be mephedrone, which though nowhere near as good as MDMA, was a reasonable substitute. MDPV maybe?

Sweet baby jesus 8o Didn't think I'd ever hear the likes of that quality pill again! In fact I can't remember having heard of a pill that strong in Aus? Let's hope this is a sign of times to come! *fingers crossed*

I'd agree that the media is about 6-12 months behind when it comes to 4-mmc though if this article is any indication.... Then again I can't really comment on Tasmania and Victoria which are the focus of this piece.

The first time, dosed high orally felt like MDMA, after that it was just chasing a high you could never get again.

A good drug IMO however it is a different drug and should be treated as such. It has it's purpose and taking MDMA's place isn't that purpose.

bk-mdma and 4-mmc are pretty much all everyone is on down here in Tassie. It is pretty much at the moment the biggest drug scene in Hobart :-\ Everyone seems to be on caps, Last week was the 1st time i'd had someone try and sell me pills in a few months.

MDMA would be umm kinda nice you know :-\ It's almost been a year since i've had any.

In years gone by, there have been many pills in the high 100's in Australia, but not since the early to mid 00's. There are currently a fair few pills in the 100-170mg range in Europe. Can only hope that they make their way to our shores in the millions...

Even the infamous red mitsi's of '04 were apparently only 110mg and they were killing people that were used to double or triple dropping! The authorities and doctors thought they were PMA to begin with...

I swear I read a Herald Sun article stating that they were much higher than that (190mg) and i've had nothing as strong before or since those pills. That article had me making phone calls and taking a week off work within 10 seconds of reading it. Talk about waving a red flag at a bull. Those were the days %)

What's going to happen when the new generation of ecstasy users, come into contact with some real deal pingers???

The younger generation have been taking 5+ (I'm reading reports of 10+ in one sitting *sigh*) low dose, adulterated or bunk pills in a night and many of them have no idea that 2-3 high dose MDMA pills could be deadly toxic.

I OD'd when I dropped a blue sky and a yellow panda together back in 2004, it wasn't fun :\

I should mention that I vaped 150mg of 'blue shabu' meth and then dropped both of those pills a few hours later on my way into a major Melb event. They did me over big time. I was found by security in a pile of my own vomit in the toilets and rushed to the alfred. I have no memory of it except for waiting in the line at 10pm and waking up in hospital around 7am.

It took me by surprise, as, I had been munching pills like candy every weekend for months (commonly doubling) and never ran into any trouble.

It can happen to anyone
