Hummus, Foul (hummus but made with Broad Beans), garlic pitta crisps and pickled veg - and to go with the Middle Eastern thing had that with iced mint tea.

Sorry Shambles had the impression you weren't that big a fan on veggie only meals.

Well, like all truly manly men I'm happiest with a mouthful o' meat, but veggie stuff is fine too - it's all down to whether it tastes good really and some veggie food is delish and wouldn't even be improved by adding some fine, fine fleshyparts. Indian food is a great example - meaty currries are great but so are veg-based ones. Indian cuisine is probably the best for veggie stuffs (imo, ime, ymmv, etc, etc) - presumably as there is such a large population of strict vegetarians over there. In fact I was thinking just recently that I should make more straight veg/legume/pulse-type curries. I tend to focus on the meat element far more than I really need to cos I genuinely <3 veg curry for what it is and is certainly a lot cheaper... Although that's not quite so clear-cut when cooking for one with no freezer capacity.

Lunch today was not veggie (surprise, surprise 8)) cos was seedy petit pains (heated in oven till just crispycrusty and nice 'n' warm 'n' fluffy inside - six of the blighters for 79p = bargain) wiv ham 'n' Leerdammer (both half price on offer) and a splodge of faux (very (raw) oniony) guacamole cos it needs using. Tasty sarnies albeit a tad mild in both ham and cheese content.

Hit the shop just as they re-discounted stuff so got loadsa bargains. Picked up duck a l'orange for two for £1.50 for tonight. Not had such a thing since I was a kid when I have dim and distant memories of having it once. If memory serves, from a tin. Late 70s/early 80s food was so very damn classy <3

Indian style veg curries are one of my faves (as you can tell by the photos) I always make enough for four meals as I love them a day or two later. Like you say they are so cheap and you can keep lentils in the cupboard for ages so can knock a quick curry up in next to no time. Sounds like you have planned your meals well for today - great bargain hunting.

Don't think I've had Duck a l'orange before - I did roast duck a while back after somebody in here set me off but not something I usually cook. We had that chicken in batter with spicy sauce for tea (identical to the photo on previous page) - must admit it was a bit too spicy (even for me). Used about 10 of the long dried red chilies soaked and then ground to a paste - brought us both out in chili sweats :D

Enjoy your Dinner or Tea :)

Pasta and a tin of ratatoille is about all i have on my menu this evening. That'll do, for a cheap and easy meal, its fairly enjoyable and healthy.

that meal was surprisingly delicious, i fried the pasta in garlic and pepper olive oil, and added fresh parmesan, fresh basil leaves, tomato puree and tomato sauce to it, and i was amazed hwo nice such a cheap any easy meal was.

Just a pepporoni piza tonight. I may add garlic, onions and sweet peppers on top for more nutrition and the antioxidants.

That ratatouille sounds lovely - its great when you use something quick and easy but it turns out great.

I had chicken wings, awesome, delicious chicken wings

Never done chicken wings in ages - I love Teriyaki wings :)

I did indeed enjoy my dinner thanks, Bear :)

(tea is a drink dontcha know ;))

*awaits northern backlash*

Duck was really quite tasty. Not as fatty as I was expecting either. Kinda hard to know what to put with orange-flavour meat so just ended up with *ahem* mash. Okay Smash (forgot to buy spuds - did actually mean to since I discovered Co-Op does loose spuds as well as bagged ones (cos bagged ones don't seem to last five minutes before sprouting all over the place) - but forgot 8)). Not exactly haute cuisine but it tasted alright. Well, the duck did. I actually managed to somewhat bugger the Smash. Actual spuds are much easier. Tastier too. Am trying to make more of an effort to not just walk straight through the fresh fruit/veg bit stopping only for chillies or the occasional tomato. Not quite succeeding very often yet but trying all the same :D

You're spot on with the lentils and other dried stuffs thing too. Sure it was seeing all you lushy-looking dahls and the like which reminded me that I actually do like such things and can cook 'em if I can be arsed. Especially the ones that don't require remembering to soak overnight cos I always either forget or get distracted and forget to use 'em before they start fermenting. I used to do a lot of cooking but is so easy to let it all slide when it's just yourself every night. Hard to justify the effort of making summat really nice. Shouldn't be but seems that way. Work in progress.

Bacon risotto

That sounds yum. I <3 risotto but is another thing I almost never think to cook despite it being dead easy. Must invest in risotto rice cos if I see it in the cupboard I may even think to use it one day 8)

I couldn't be on soaking lentils the night before - the only thing that I do like that is that white bean stew thing. They need to be soaked overnight or boiled for a long time the next day. I find that if you soak them and change the water a few times there easier to digest and you don't spend the night farting :D. I don't mind cooking for myself (thankfully it doesn't happen that often) but I normally make a curry and it that over a few days.

Made another batch of flapjacks tonight - Cranberry, Apricot and Walnut.

Lawdy. You even make flapjacks look sexy <3

Agreed on the changing water frequently thing. Can't say I've compared gaseous volume to have any idea whether it works for that particular purpose but will take your word for it. I just do it cos the water gets kinda scummy and generally manky looking if you don't change it a few times. I don't have a very big soaking pot usually though so that's probably just down to that. Unless I buy especially scummy legumes. It's yellow split peas that I usually need to soak. They don't have a great variety of dried beans at the place I usually shop so haven't experiemented much. Need to expand horizons and explore the wholefood shop in town. Unless it shut down without me noticing. Pretty sure there still is one cos I've been noticing there rather colourful displays of recycled (and presumably very bloody expensive) bog roll in the window of late.

Not unless you use it to smoke duck breast or summat it ain't :p

My paternal grandmother was proper northern - Sunderland, I do believe. Used to hate it when she'd call me in for "yer tea" within earshot of my friends :D

(she lived next door when i was at primary school and i went there after school every night.. mostly to eat tomato ketchup (or maybe red sauce 8)) sarnies and torment balloons with egg-slicers - we made our own entertainment back then you see ;))

I would say Tea is between about 4/5pm-6pm ish and dinner is about 7pm onwards =D at least that's how it works in my world. Then of course there is Supper if you are posh or attend Burlesque supper clubs and the like-which to me really seems to be dinner with more booze than usual--or am I talking bollocks.

Given up fags and typically just hungry all the time. I have just eaten a rather delicious avocado and bacon sandwich on thick floury white bread.

And yes you guessed..diet starts Monday :|

Just had some cheese toasties and now gonna have a cup of tea and finish off the various chocolates left over from Christmas.

Mine too.

I'm caning the calories today, eating junk food to try to gain some weight. Every time I end up in hospital I seem to lose a couple of kilos and really struggle to put it back on again. So far I've had a bacon and egg sandwich, some pasta salad, a Ginsters slice and a yoghurt based smoothie, which together added up to over 2,000 calories. Can't do this sort of thing during the week because I'll be dealing with the consequences of abusing my dodgy digestive system all night now.

Tea is a drink not a meal unless you're the type who goes in for High Tea... .which isn't necessarily a particularly northern thing so I may have to retract my vaguely racist suggestions about my more northerly brothers and sisters.

Hehe. Hark at him. I think I actually qualify as at least partially northern by my own definitions - I may have been borne is saaaaaaaaaaarf Laahndan but I mostly grew up a but further up the map I must admit. Largely in and around a town which actually specifes it's northerly position :o

Moving swiftly on (nobody suspects a thing :sus:) and back on topic of munching, today I have munched a gammon steak and tomato bap (wholemeal) for brekky, a smoked haddock 'n' mustard fishcake and tomato bap wiv faux guacamole for lunch, and will be finishing off last night's pastafest ("Truly Irresistible" lasagne, resistible but perfectly edible ham and mushroom tagliatelle and lomticks of Balsamic and Parmesan flatbread - yes it is a bit extravagant but for slightly complex and dull reasons it isn't really so bad as it seems). This would be a bit exorbitant for me really but have caught Co-Op at double reduction time a few times this week so got fuckloads of stuff in - everything I just mentioned cost a grand total of less than a tenner and represents two days of relative feasting. Bargains <3
