I am a southern boy and I used to enjoy a bowl of Bisto with bread for the dunking as a nipper. I preferred tinned soup but that was considered a luxury in our house whilst we always had gravy for Sunday roasts so I had that instead.

Got strange looks in the capital asking for some bastard gravy on my chips, "we dont do gravy". what? You are a chippy...Pretty sure they didnt do steak pudding either which was equally ridiculous

Perhaps even worse are those chippies that dont do salt and vinegar, wtf 8o Chips without salt and vinegar is inconceivable, it's those ones that 'specialise' in chips 'n' gravy. No wonder they dont have many customers. :sus:

Yeah chips and gravy aint a thing down south except in certain cities, and you won't find a pudding anywhere.

I fucking love chips and gravy. What about curry sauce, is that an option down south?

Proper chippies seem to be a dying breed down here. You'll more likely find kebab places/chicken places that might do fish, battered sausage, pies etc. as an afterthought

It sucks - I'm unable to get Fish & Chips cooked in dripping as opposed to oil anywhere down here, and there's no comparison TBH. I only know one proper chippy that does it in the whole of the city (as opposed to £17 a dish gastropubs, where it's rife for its 'authenticity').

Beetroot sandwiches are a new one for me, with salad cream and salt, very very cheap, (a 40 pence bag is lasting for ever) keeps your hunger satisfied for a couple of hours, and beetroot is meant to be nutrituous and healthy too. Win. Thank's Dan for championing the forgotten beetroot.

Aldi. The prices really are amazing. A kilo of porridge is 60 pence its exactly the same stuff as the branded Quaker Oats which costs £2-£3, or more. 4 pints of milk is 95p. Proper tasty pizzas are just £1. A bag of about 8 banannas is about 70p. 8o The store is also just a 5 minute walk away, so it's really very handy indeed.

I'm a fan of Aldi/Lidl but have to take a train to get to the nearest one (or any other supermarket except local Co-Op) so not very practical cos can't carry enough to make it really worthwhile. Always pop in if I'm in town anyway though - some amazing bargains and properly nice stuff they have in there.

Real mixed bag Aldi/Lidl. A lot of what they sell is vile and not worth any amount of money imo, but they also have some amazing prices on some quality products if you can pick them out.

I think there's a gravy line somewhere around Watford. I went to Uni in Kent and was in gravy WDs for 3 years.

Whaaat? Never had chips and gravy? I'm shocked. :O

No gravy on chips here but you can have mint sauce on yer kebab which I've not seen in England. Not that I've travelled England sampling kebabs or owt mind.

Local chippy here won some award for being the best in the country this year. No gravy though so presume it to be a controversial decision.
