I can kinda see why some of PTCH's posts may have riled up some believers but I honestly don't believe for a second anything he says is meant to cause genuine offense. He's Scottish - Glaswegian even - it's a miracle he ain't stabbing us all or summat ;)

But you must have seen other posts of his around the forum, no? If so you must know he's a fine chap with a great way with words some of which can occasionally be misunderstood. Same as all the rest of us. It's pretty obvious to me at least that he's a funny fucker being funny but making serious points at the same time. Is perhaps one of the problems with online discussions - words alone are often easy to misinterpret. Like the Bible ;)=D<3

And I've said the same thing about your god too. I may have worded it differently but you seem to realise that I was being somewhat jokey but also deadly serious (unless you've missed many of my posts here where I'm saying precisely that kinda stuff). Just seems somewhat selective is all. I really don't see how anything PTCH has said is any more offensive than what I and others have said for those looking to be offended. It's pretty clear that opinions are greatly divided - and somewhat heated - but also good natured from all so far to me. I'm sure your god is man enough to take it, no?

Ha! Not really. Was my usual semi-serious stuff is all. I happen to truly believe that secular morality (the type that is grounded in reason) really is superior to religious morality of any flavour. But wasn't implying for a moment that you were immoral for such piffling hypocrisy (if it was even that) in your talking about PTCH when he's not here to defend himself. Just an obvious opportunity to make a point I believe to be true whilst having a sly dig at religees and their tendency to take the moral highground went it ain't necessarily justified is all ;)

Let's not let this thread get all messy with misunderstandings, eh? I think it should maybe be taken as read that nobody here has any malice towards anybody else <3

Not even remotely out of order, Acieed. Is quite clearly a not-entirely-serious post even without the disclaimer. And even if it wasn't it would be water off a duck's ringpiece given how often religees genuinely do say precisely such things ;)<3

Only indirectly though. Hitler's views and policies on the Jews are lifted almost word for word in places from some of Martin Luther's more anti-Semitic writing. Given Mr Luther is essentially the founder of all Protestant sects it's summat Protestants of all flavour should know about. Some of the stuff he expounded is so shocking it makes the Nazis look like they were playing at anti-Semitism 8(

There's endless debate about whether Hitler was an atheist, a Catholic or some kinda quasi-Pagan but one of the things we do know for sure is that he knew the works of Martin Luther. And he took some of that stuff and ran with it. In a big way :|

Not suggesting for a moment that it was the sole cause of the atrocites, but was certainly one of the inspirations for some of the worst of it. Christians in times past weren't exactly Jew-friendly to say the least...

Not quite sure what it is you can't believe I said, Jess? If you just mean that I said I believe that secular morality is superior to religious morality then I do. Have said it several times before and will do again. I say it because secular morality is based in reason not superstion. Perhaps you thought I meant non-religious morality in general? I didn't and don't. Am talking about morality in the traditional philosophical sense not the religious one. The kinda stuff you have to justify at every step along the way. Actual morality. I don't believe in Biblical morality, remember? I find it too often immoral oddly enough ;)

Will dig up some linkies to explain my position better later cos I'm fairly sure this is just a simple case of talking at cross purposes <3

Ya. I know about the SS occult stuff. He wasn't into it but wasn't that fussed about it either. Much of German occultism at the time had some heavy anti-Semitic influences. Was very much in the atmosphere... the zeitgeist if you will. The "German quasi-genius" was quite possibly Martin Luther as mentioned - Nazism was riddled with the darker side of Luther's writings - but there was certainly a particular German fella whose anti-Semetic writings he was into I forget the name of but much nearer a contemporary so I'm guessing you meant that one. I would hardly describe Nazism or Facism as "promotion of positive Christianity" meself (despite a certain amount of temptation ;)) as it was clearly not his intent whatsoever. He was a totalitarian dictator so used and abused anything that did the job. I'm sure there were many influences on him just as with all of us.

Alright guys we all knew this was likely to turn heated; can everyone try to stick to debating the topic and lay off any personal insults please? This is an interesting topic and for the most part, even though there are some wildly different views, so far it's stayed the right side of the "heated debate" and "slanging match" line.

If anyone has a problem with an individual poster I suggest you either bite your tongue, ignore them (there is an ignore function for those who don't know) or take it to PM (but remember that abusive PMs are not okay either and remember PMs can be reported too). Of course, you can also report any posts you feel cross the line and we will look at them for you.

Abuse is against the BLUA; heated debate, banter and the like are part of EADD. It can be a fine line but I'm sure most of you can tell when you're crossing it. I don't want to get heavy handed and start removing posts or infracting people, or closing the thread, that would be a real shame - so can everyone just try to keep on topic and avoid personal attacks, please? Insulting people's intelligence is not going to go down well or add to the debate in any way, is it?

I'm taking no sides; as far as I can see it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, with some misunderstandings, maybe a bit of over-sensitivity (I understand that this is a sensitive topic, no insult was meant there) and things are getting too personal.

I understand some of you are angry. It might be a good idea to step away from the thread, let things cool down, possibly place someone on ignore if you are finding them upsetting/rude/difficult to talk to, then see if we can carry on with the debate minus the agro?

If you talk to people civilly, no sneering or mocking and discussions can happen. Do the opposite and they react emotionally, amplify it and that's how wars start, particularly over this subject.

I troll people in other threads, but not this one. Someone said religion gets afforded too much respect, but it has to. The life cycle of the human is so insignificant and yet so massive, our deaths will be the smallest and biggest things to ever happen to us and thats what it all boils down to, good old cheery death :)
