Though these pictures might look like beautiful abstract paintings, they are actually photos of volcanic rivers in Iceland taken by Russian photographer Andre Ermolaev. Flying over Iceland’s active volcano systems, Ermolaev captures the swirling colours, patterns and textures of the volcanic rivers below as they flow through the black sand and eventually find their way to the ocean. Ermolaev calls Iceland “wonderful… a true paradise for all the photo shooting-lovers.”

It may look cute and cuddly but this red fox proved what a fearsome predator it is when it chased down and caught a pheasant. The fox stalked the unlucky bird across a snowy field in Minnesota before making its move and pouncing. Not even the panicked bird's attempt to take off and flee were enough to save it and the dramatic chase ended with the fox as victor. The American red fox is similar to Britain's native version apart from its extra long winter coat and thicker brush.

A stunned photographer has captured what appears to be a ghostly figure on camera - with even paranormal investigators struggling to explain his spooky image. The shot shows a transparent figure dressed in modern clothing gazing out over the Thames near Westminster Bridge. Professional snapper Jules Annan took the shots on New Year's Eve but only noticed the ghostly apparition when he got home. Two extreme sports professionals take a leap of faith as they plunge headfirst down a 75ft waterfall. White water kayaker Ben Marr and skier Rory Bushfield executed the death-defying stunt at the Mamquam Falls in Squamish, Canada. Bushfield performed a "gainer" - a backwards somersault while still moving forward - from the top of the falls while Marr descended it in his kayak. The stunt was not without its dangers - only a few days before their descent, a young Vancouver man drowned after leaping into the waterfall
