Yeah it's really annoying. I assumed it was my line-in cable/port not being up to scratch. It may well be a sound card issue - I just use the card my PC came with, the bog standard one. A new sound card is on my list of things to get when I get a job.

I bought one of the below and for the price it is great and removed most of the hiss issues. I have my decks/mixer running through it and recordings sound a lot better and it got rid of latency issues. Its def better than the standard soundcard that pc's have built in. This card used to cost a lot more but has come down in price loads, well worth it.

Yeah its a usb external sound card mate, it has a phono and line input. My whole set up runs through it and as the input/output is running through my mixer I don't have to fuck about and change anything for either playback or recording as its looped (if that makes sense?)
