EADD Movie Recommendations Thread v.4...not for TV series and stuff Dan...

Is that the one where he dies all the time?

If it is, I watched that last night. Plot holes galore, but I enjoyed it. Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers.

Yes that one - its really good fun, best one of his movies in a while IMHO. Plot holes? Was there? I'm a simple fellow and was to distracted by the 3D to notice. Please if you explain NSFW it. I think Ill be going to see the Angelina new one (can't spell her surname or the movie and too lazy to check :D) but looks like its something you need to see in the cinema.

I tried to explain this to my flatmate but he wasn't having it. I'll try with you.

Major plot hole for me was
NSFW:
the girl remembering that she no longer remembers. She could remember what had happened for some 300 days in a row, then she lost the power. On the day she lost the power that day would have reset so she would go back to 6am or whatever that morning, still thinking that she remembers every time. She doesn't know that there's been say another 100 times since she stopped remembering, because she shouldn't remember losing the power, every day to her will feel like it is day 301 (assuming she had the power for 300 days). I realise that's a mad clumsy explanation but does it make sense?

Basically, she shouldn't know that she has lost the power. The day resets and her last memory is of the previous attempt at that day when she still had the power, she should have basically been stuck in that loop

Also, I think it might have explained this one but...
NSFW:
Why did the aliens need to have a mad war with the humans? Couldn't they just rock in for a day 1 wipe everyone out attack and then simply repeat that day over and over until they got it right?

I remember someone saying "All they needed to do to take over a planet was wait for the dominant species to attack" but I don't remember any further explanation, why did they need to wait to be attacked?

And a question
NSFW:
Why did Brendan Gleeson hate Tom Cruise so much? So much so that he would get his US superior to transfer him to be under his control just so he could fuck him right down the front line to die? I wasn't paying attention for the first couple of minutes

And a question
NSFW:
People could remember their past up until he restarted the day ? You don't know the time between here losing her power and the new guy getting his ? Same with the aliens - could have been one day/hour/minute ? Have no idea why the guy hated Tom that much ??

Hope this is NSFW - done that wrong but PTCH :D

NSFW:
They could all remember their past but not the day that kept resetting. At some point she lost her power, so her day reset (with no memory of that day) like everyone else. Her last memory would have been the previous go at that day with the power so she should wake up every day thinking it's just the very next go round after that. It doesn't matter if there was 1 day or 10 years between her having it & the Cruise having it.

She shouldn't know that she can't remember the previous go.

I know I'm not explaining this well but what I mean is that if you had the power, then lost it, you shouldn't remember the day that you lost it. So she should think she still has it when really she is just endlessly repeating day 301

Also, they get the power by it getting in their blood. They lost it with a blood transfusion. When the day resets it resets to a point before they got infected with the blood, yet they keep the infected blood in them?

Still enjoyed it though lol

NSFW:
Isn't this the thing with time travel though [temporal paradox theory] - maybe she died and woke up on the same day as Tom ? If he was able to retain his memory [he was infected] then at one time they both were [infected]. They were never both actually dead at the same time - each resets the day , the movie is telling the story from one persons point of view - could have been her movie but Tom draws more bucks ? Maybe her day started with the push ups and she was waiting for him as she knew he could solve the puzzle, maybe she tried everything so was letting his scenario play out and see where it lead?

Still enjoyed it though lol

Me too :D

NSFW:
That's kind of what my flatmate said. But she lost her power when she got a blood transfusion, so she could remember all of the attempts at that day up to that point, then she stopped remembering all the new ones that Tom Cruise was doing. So what I'm saying is that she shouldn't remember the day that she lost the power.

They don't both reset the day. She used to reset the day before we ever meet her. Now Tom Cruise can reset the day.

But aye, there's always going to be plot holes in time travel movies. Have you seen Primer? That's a headfuck of a time travel film, must have seen it 5 or 6 times now and read a massive explanation online and I still don't quite get it.

He had a machine inside another machine with two backup machines and another one inside another one and and and fuck it, I'll just watch some Pokemon.

Was flicking through netflix and saw primer on there, didnt watch it though. might watch it if its still on there, i like headfuck films

NSFW:
Maybe she did ? She could have been playing the 1 second flash back - the movie was strung together as a snapshot of her explaining the story? Could she not of theorized about how she lost her memory? Maybe she only lost her real power when Tom did ? Maybe she never had it and was caught up in Tom's loop somehow ?

Primer - don't think I have, Ill see if I can find it

It's a really good film. It'll confuse the hell out you the first couple times (and probably every other time) you see it but it's still quality. Not many "WTF actually happened there?" films that I see would I repeatedly re-watch to try and figure it out rather than just deciding it was a load of shite so they must have done something right.

i find with primer, the less people know about it ahead of time, the more enjoyable it is. when i saw it, it was recommended to me by a friend who told me to watch it and said that was all he was going to tell me. i'm glad that i knew nothing going in - it really increased my enjoyment of the movie's unfolding.

i highly recommend deep water - "The remarkable, true story of the first solo, non-stop, round-the-world boat race and the psychological toll it took on its competitors.":

it's not just the best documentary i've ever seen, it's one of the best films i've ever seen.

Insomnia

One of those gems that you come across on Netflix. There are a lot of mediocre films but also some very good ones too.

A great thriller with a psychological side to it. Al Pacino just does what he does best & Robin Williams surprisingly worked well as the bad guy.

it is a true head-fuck, good recommendation.

It's interesting that you say they are Japanese at times, they most certainly are but many of them have a European twist as well. I find the Japanese bits rather endearing really..

"Japanese" in the sense that they just are. There is a very specifically "Japanese" flavour to his stuff which does come over weird in the dubbed US versions I've seen of his stuff. It's like they try to pretend none of that's there and is actually a kid's film in the Western sense - which they are and are not which is why they are great. What I most <3 is the characterisation. It's more perfect than Disney could ever dream of <3

the prestige was better than the illusionist :P

Clearly. It's about Tesla and has David Bowie in it - what's not to like? :D

anyone seen Riddick? :)

Yup. It's what you'd expect. This is a Good Thing with Riddick films.

Grave of the fireflies is a stinking, amazing anime! Watched it on a horrendous comedown and stuffed full of ket - was perfect <3

Dunno how old you are but those kinda films resonate with those of us who grew up in the 80s. When I was... about ten(ish) my mother took me to see When the Wind Blows cos it was the same bloke who did The Snowman. Scarred me for life. As such I <3 Grave of the Fireflies. Another damn fine Japanese fillum about that whole Hiroshima bizniz would be Kuroi Ame (Black Rain) (linky to full subtitled film). Cheery it ain't - if you know what the title refers to you'll know what to expect of the early portion of the film especially. The latter is actually both sadder and more hopeful whilst being unrelentingly bleak. Ideal comedown entertainment ;)

Feeling a re-watch of The Wolf of Wall Street soon, that is one good fucking film.

No, no it wasn't. It was dire.

(as in actually dire not in vulpine form therof)

That film gave me nightmares for years. Meant to watch it again several times but still gives me the willies just thinking about it. I have very clear memories of being terrified for large parts of the 80s and utterly convinced we were all about to die horribly at any moment. There's a few similar films but Threads was the one that really got me. When the Wind Blows was really depressing and kinda heartbreaking even to a bolshy 10yo boy but Threads just scared the crap out of me.

Speaking of crap, watched that new Robocop film t'other night and is truly dire. Was muchly disappointed cos was rather fond of the original and seemed like it should be kinda easy to update it and even improve on it in some ways. Massive disappointment. The kids TV series has more balls than that film. Really very bad indeed.

May ruin another fave film soonish cos got the Evil Dead remake knocking about. I know I will watch it cos was such a massive fan of the originals... As long as it doesn't actually ruin the memory I can see hope. It's not gonna be as good but hopefully not quite in the same league of direness as the Robocop thing.

Is it that bad? I was going to watch it because I've got an irrational fondness for Robocop too (first proper violent, 18 film I saw as a kid - the full uncut scene of Murphy getting shot to pieces is still hilarious).

Can imagine it will have lost all the satire / humour of Veerhoven, but I enjoyed Robocop 2 enough, and that was pretty naff.

I could have written that.

I've got it but haven't got round to watching it yet.

Read some reviews on that being shit as well, think i'll avoid it. the new-ish Judge dredd is wicked

It really really is that bad. Imagine Robocop with all the violence, all the satire and all the humour removed. What is left? A bad actor in a silly costume. It's appallingly bad. I'm guessing they're aiming it at the kids/teen market as some kinda superhero-type film cos it bears no relation to Robocop other than the suit being a bit similar - and even then only in bits cos it's all sleek and black for most of the film. Truly terrible. I really wanted to like it and even if it was just a bit shit I'd probably have forgiven it if they'd at least kept the spirit of the original but they literally stripped every good thing about it out and left an empty vacant husk of a film. It's shit.
