^ Going to see that on Friday I think. Can't wait. It'll be the only instalment of the main franchise that I've seen at the cinema...

Its really worth it and has to be the best one yet. I'll be going back to see it next week as the bf wants to see it also (and I wouldn't wait :D)

I just saw The Wind Rises.

Another great addition to the Studio Ghibli repertoire. The subject matter is a bit more grown up but it still has all the things I've come to love from Studio Ghibli. I'm not sure if it's just me, but I think there were lots of small aspects taken from many of the classics. It was Hayao Miyazaki's last feature-length animation & surely the end of an era in some respects. <3

The Normal Heart - about the early days of Aids. Cried through most of it, what scares me most though a statistic shown at the end says 6000 people a day get HIV.

Coming to the UK soon, The Dance of Reality by Alejandro Jodorowsky.

A new Jodorowsky film?!? Thanks for the heads up.

And another thanks for another heads-up. Was a bit disappointed with his last one but possibly need to watch it again cos he doesn't seem capable of actually making something bad.

True. Hayao Miyazaki was a master... fuck Disney Pixar, Studio Ghibli is where it's at. =D

I found From Up On Poppy Hill a little hard to follow with subtitles. It wasn't the best but it wasn't bad either really. I think it might flow better if it comes with an English Dub on DVD.

I got completely immersed in The Wind Rises with subtitles though...

I really hope that Studio Ghibli manage to keep the standard up & don't change their animation style like has occasionally happened. I notice that the next two films are done by the people who worked on Arrietty, which was an amazing film.

Not seen that one but cannot bear the subtitled version of any of his films. Subtitled versions are often cut for American audience too which doesn't help. I find more or less all of his films stand up to repeat viewing - quite a number of repeat views at that - so doesn't really matter how much you absorb first time around cos they look gorgeous anyway and the mood says it all even if the details are somewhat... Japanese at times.

In non-Miyazake anime news, you seem the kinda chap who's probably already seen Grave of the Fireflies but if not you (and all) should (linky is to the subbed version, dubbed down the right hand side but will be missing much atmosphere). Second only to When the Wind Blows in terms of post-nuclear holocaust bleakness and uncanny ability to bring tears to eyes via the medium of hand-drawn animations.

EDIT: And it got made into a live action fillum apparently. Not seen it but could go either way and quite drastically either way. Interested though cos if it's good it should be very, very good... and if it is bad 'twill be horrid. No worries about the copyright infringement cos is PooToob and they are allowed to infringe copyright cos Google sez so.

Just had a sci-fi film watching burst:

The Banshee Chapter (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2011276/) - I knew i wanted to watch it when i glanced at a review and saw 'HP Lovecraft, MKUltra, DMT, and a Hunter Thompson type character'. I was expecting to cringe much more than i did - it really could have been terrible, but was actually pretty good. (ok, so it could have been so much better, but hey ho). Demons and DMT ftw.

The Machine (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2317225/). I knew i'd want to watch this one too when i read it described as 'the welsh bladerunner' - not much sign of it's welshness in the film (cept some welsh looking pylons), but a pretty good AI/robot film - recommended.

Upstream Colour (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2084989/) - i'm sure many/most people would find this film irritating as it's hard to tell what's going on at any point cos it's so arty and indy. But for people who don't mind that sort of thing, i thought it was really cool. The story is roughly about some sort of hypnotising drug/grub that takes over people, but i haven't really got a clue as to the actual details (i will watch again though). Made by the person that made Primer (similarly difficult indy time travel film, though easier to follow than this one). Probably a marmite film but i loved the ambiguousness and weirdness of it - excellent for watching on dissociatives

Carrie (the new one) - it was alright i suppose; pretty closely following the basic plot of the original film mostly. One major bad point was carrie was way too beautiful (cissy spacek is beautiful, but she's also 'conventionally ugly' so it's easier to believe the plot). Not bad trashy horror (though i think as much because it made me remember the old one).

Ender's Game - Alright, but a bit military for my tastes. Would have loved it when i was about 10.

Europa Report - Got round to watching this. Pretty good hard sci-fi. Really expected it to turn into the cliche space horror thing, but a bit more serious really. Quite good (maybe a bit boring if you were expecting a brain sucking space horror fest)

(sorry if some(all) of these have been done)

They most definitely do stand up to repeat viewings... they are great to watch with an opiate high or with a bottle of red wine. I think nearly every time I have taken Codeine or DHC, I have watched a Studio Ghibli film.

It's interesting that you say they are Japanese at times, they most certainly are but many of them have a European twist as well. I find the Japanese bits rather endearing really.

Well, I saw it a couple of days ago. Great film! :)

In terms of plot etc. it was most definitely the best from but I think I preferred X-Men: First Class. Apples & Oranges though ... the genre certainly seems to be taking the right turns.

+1 to Xmen days of future past! great movie all around, good balance of character plot and spectacle! loved the 3D of it too which is rare for me. probably the best one of the franchise so far.

also recently watched Godzilla. was ok, pretyt standard monster movie actually. some good scenes but felt a bit... void of emotional impact. also, didnt gain much from the 3D...

Has anyone else seen 25th Hour? Great film, easily one of my favourites, must've watched it 7 or 8 times now. Edward Norton is a class actor and most importantly for me (being a writer an' all) the plot was actually involving with no dull moments/pointless filler. I really liked the ending as well which is rare for me, I'm a bit of an endings snob (if that's a thing). Go watch it anyway, it's good stuff :)

Just watched Computer Chess - saw about 8 films at the London Film Festival last year and that was one I was gutted I missed. Not so gutted now though - it was naff.

I really enjoyed this short film (well, I say enjoyed...) at the fest though, you should give it a try if you've 15 minutes spare. The password is 'gull'

Yeah good film that, havent seen it for years

All of my favourite films are Edward Norton films pretty much. American History X, Fight Club, The Illusionist... I did make a goal to try and watch every film he's ever done but it's been forgotten recently, I'll have to get back to it in the summer. I'm more of a TV series person though, you don't have to stay focused for as long haha. Currently rewatching Dexter, the first series' are so much better than the later ones.

Without a doubt, 1-5 were really good... they should have skipped the 6th... the rest were bad, they had different writers i think... and the last season was an absolute mess, such a shit ending. i could have written a better season than that. i was expecting some wild stuff to happen... but no. proper let down
