to ride a 150 you need to have passed your big bike test. :\ so to begin with it might be more useful to set your sights on a 125. i could go on but i think that link cletus posted is more useful.

i certainly wouldn't bother with a 50, unless you like straining to reach 30mph. those things are fucking unsafe if you ask me. :|

At the moment, you must pass your CBT at a recognised training school before you can take to the road on a 125. Then you can take lessons on a bigger bike, but during this time & before you sit the final riding test, you must complete the theory test. A piece of piss if have actually read the book that goes along with it! You also have to sit a hazard perception test on a computer at the centre. You may have already done one of these in the past, but this is what most people fail at because it is linked to the theory test. I would recommend one of the DVD's you can buy & try it first. Check ebay for a cheapo that is DVLA recognised. It gives a better understanding of what it is looking for, instead of the clickfest that a lot of people go for. Making a right cunt of it in the process =D

If you go for the Direct Access, which in my opinion is best to get if you want a bigger bike later. You would usually have lessons on 500cc bikes that are restricted to 33bhp & take the test on them as well.

Anyone can ride a bike fast. However not everyone can ride a bike slow, which you will find out to your surprise & frustration. Stick with it & it will al fall into place. :D

There's my bitch. 1993 yzf750spe, one of only 160 worldwide :D 130hp at the rear wheel and I love her to pieces. There's nothing like a methamphetamine-fuelled, 200km/hr+ blast down the motorway at 2am, except for one at 2pm I guess, ahah.

I might as well post this too. There's the scar from where I was opened up and had my wrist put back together by way of a steel plate and 6 screws this time last year. I had the front axle snap on my supermotard as I cam into a corner and ended up going over the bars, breaking my right wrist, shattering my left thumb into 4 pieces [it got wired back together] and cracking my c2 and c3 vertebrae. If it wasn't for my license currently being suspended I'd still be riding everyday =D.

I believe it has to be at least 46.6bhp for direct access or accelerated access. A typical 500 is slightly above that. You could do your DAS on a 'busa if you really wanted.
33bhp is the max output if you've done a standard test and before your 2 years is up.

I agree on the slow riding part.

I'm gonna do my CBT and theory first off and then do an direct access course as soon as I can afford it. I'm gonna get my provisional sorted today!

Spot on, you're right. I was getting mixed up with the figures. Just like Spade, I'm "special" :D

Imagine having a Superblackbird or a busa limited to 33bhp for a couple of years. On the very day you go to deristrict it & you wring it's neck like you have been - *Hello wall* Bang! Right in the kisser LOL! They'd just hose you down the gutter :\

Me and a mate looked at some new Vespa's for around 2 grand, but I've also checked out some different vintage models and found some decent prices.

How did you get in to it? What do I need to do first to learn to ride a 150 or something small?

My mate reckons you can do a day course to learn the basics to ride a 50 for about £60 quid. Although I'm not licensed in any way at all, I've been on a few scooters in the past and only managed to fall off a few times (also burned my leg on the exhust :X )

How long and how expensive do you reckon it's gonna be to progress and get something fast? I don't really want to learn to drive a car yet, as it's very expensive to learn and to run a car when you eventually pass.

Do you think CBT cost is negotiable or do you just have to pay the full amount? I'm a bit hard up lol
 
It is a standard government fee I believe, just like your actual driving test.

You can always blow the guy & he might pay it.

Although I'm sorely tempted to reach for my wallet! =D
