EADD Motorbike/Scooter Discussion

^ I thought you were being 'challenged' in a good way , I was beaming with pleasure at your response to a challenge!
Sadism would require my being delighted at your discomfort or failure! As if!:D

Just bought a GPS:

TomTom One UK & Europe, £200 from Comet. Bargain. Goes right down to street level anywhere in Europe, so there will be no getting lost this time. %) Got a handlebar mount coming from ebay as well.

We'll be able to tour about at random and not worry a fuck about getting home. Three 'clicks' on the touchscreen and it'll lead us back, which is obviously cool in its own right, but it also means we'll be more adventurous and I *won't* be having an aneurysm with the stress of trying to keep everyone on track all the time. :)

I can't believe how cheap these things are now; this time last year this might have cost £500 or more. =D

Last year we got so completely and utterly lost in Geneva we had to hire a taxi to lead us to our hotel. :o

Just bought a GPS:

I think that unless you actually stop the bike , you might end up running into the back of someone! A sort of dull version of looking at passing lasses and drooling like a fool, then - CRASH BANG FUCK!" 8o 8o :D

Anyone else tried GPS a la` motorcycle ?

Well, there's no doubt you need to concentrate and watch what you're doing. But no more so (in theory less so) than using maps on the tank bag. I would think you would switch it off for long stretches of motorway where things are signposted well.

When I get the handlebar mount set up properly I shouldn't really need to take my eyes off the road much. I hope. ;)

(in theory less so)

Aye 'in theory' however I suspect as it will most likely be on a lesser (is that correct?) scale then you will be familiarising much of the time as it changes. Perhaps I am wrong but the old map in plastic stuck to tank with pre-planned route seems more predicable to me than a self regulating (changing) bit of techwizardry.
However I hope I am wrong , just the obvious advantage of it saying "turn left in 100 metres" etc, would appear to be voided on a bike. Or does it have an earpiece?

We'll still take paper maps as a fall back. Plus they're better for looking at the big picture as well.

But look at these photos (I just went out to the shed to take especially for you ;))

Looking down at the tankbag (i.e. eyes completely off the road, as you try like fuck to find your present location AND where you want to go):

Or keeping your head up, looking at the GPS just under the instruments:

It has a speaker on the back which you can hear on the bike at low speeds, and I think you can buy an earpiece for it. But that doesn't matter, you can do all your navigation purely from what you see on the screen.

These things are very popular with motorbike tourers, I didn't just make it up. ;) My 'other' cyberchums swear by them. %)

Simple is beautiful!

What computer game were you playing, Spade? ;)

That looks mint, how's it fare in rainy situations?
It's not going to get wet. :|

But if it does, I've already made a little wetsuit for it. :D

Motorbikes and Scooters!

Anyone bikers on here?

I've been considering learning to ride a bike for a while now. I really really really want a 150cc Vespa to start off with but would also like to eventually get on something bigger and much faster.

Me and a mate looked at some new Vespa's for around 2 grand, but I've also checked out some different vintage models and found some decent prices.

How did you get in to it? What do I need to do first to learn to ride a 150 or something small?

My mate reckons you can do a day course to learn the basics to ride a 50 for about £60 quid. Although I'm not licensed in any way at all, I've been on a few scooters in the past and only managed to fall off a few times (also burned my leg on the exhust :X )

How long and how expensive do you reckon it's gonna be to progress and get something fast? I don't really want to learn to drive a car yet, as it's very expensive to learn and to run a car when you eventually pass.

:)

How old are you? This affects how you can progress.
I'll try and give an answer at the end of the day, am neck deep in work right now and only here while something compiles.
