Well, all I can say is that's always been my approach (originally due to nothing other than being scared witless 8) ) and I've been offered every job I've ever been interviewed for - beats me why, though :\

I think a few white lies isn't going to hurt anyone. I think I might need to be a bit inventive when it comes to what events 'experience' I've had considering it's actually none. Who's to say I haven't helped organise nights at the student union or run my own club nights or whatever....

I too have been offered every job I've ever been interviewed for but they've both just been part time jobs while studying. I think they are actually the only jobs I've even applied for.

I rang them up two days ago, have a meeting on Tuesday

You just spend 20 minutes on the phone saying No no no no no no no yes no no no no no
Then they say, ok you're eligible for JSA, come to this meeting on so and so

PS. about back dated payments, you need a medical reason
I thought I'd missed out on loads of payments, but I couldn't claim until 1st September anyway because my mum was still receiving child money, I forget the name

What happened to the Guardian mod job?

Never applied; it was only 6 month contract.

I dunno, part of me feels like I should have...if a permanent job came up doing that, then i'd definitely go for it.

what struck me was the fact that the HR wifey didn't really push me for answers too much. like, i would have three answers ready to say, and after i'd given the first one she would move onto the next question.

That's exactly what happened in mine! I kept thinking 'when is this going to get hard?'.

Good or bad, I dunno?

Your not out of paper? That's a good thing then. :p

I still need to 'create' my C.V. but still no one has told me what the essential sections are?

Here's some guidance from an agency I'm with
(copy paste the URL, don't click it: I don't want them tracking website hits and coming back to BL and finding me ;))

There isn't *a* CV. You should look to tailor your CV towards the jobs you apply for and bring to the front key skills/qualifications which are most relevant.

This is even more important for a covering letter.

A basic CV might be:

Contact Details
Personal Intro (who you are, what you're about, what you want to do - keep it all brief and punchy)
Qualifications (school)
Qualifications (additional)
Key SKills/Abilities
Work Experience to date
Interests/About you - Bullshit important here but keep it clever and positive.
References

edit: I would add that if you don't have any form of 'career cv' laid out already what the FUCK were your uni doing with you in your final year?! It's a bloody competitive market at the moment so best get working if you want to find something decent!

Start thinking about what you want to do and get yourself onto some sites/read books to determine potential careers based on skills and interests.

Get your cvs written tailored to those interests and fire them off to recruitment agencies which are in the particular fields. Let them do the work for you instead of endlessly looking on job sites..

It's v competitive everywhere at the moment so best get your skates on/lie like hell.

Cheers for the info on the CV ducky. :)

How do you mean a 'career CV laid out'? And what do you mean what were my uni doing with me? They were teaching me of course (or at least trying to) not helping me write CVs and look for jobs or did I miss the point?

I've been thinking about what I want to do and the answer is I'm just not sure. I know what I'm interested in but I can't translate this into any sort of realistic job.

I've got a big list of people doing various event related stuff in Edinburgh and surrounding area's I'm going to contact all of those. I'm going to be contacting Events Scotland, Edinburgh City Council Events and all other companies putting on events big or small to see if there's any jobs going paid or voluntary. Unfortunately with being away all summer I've missed endless possibilities with the Edinburgh Festival but I can live with that and it was definitely worth it.

"You will need: proven experience of bulk or illicit drugs": I read that far and thought, yeah, d_r's in. Then I saw 'analysis' afterwards :(

Spade: think of something least bad, then. At least try to narrow yourself down to an area or an industry. Or think about what sort of jobs would get you into the events/entertainment sector. Which, btw, is bound to be incredibly competitive. All the people I know working that sector started off by volunteering and stuff.

I leave interests and references off my CV, but only because it's already three pages, and I don't have room for them. I say 'references available on request'. Let's face it, they're going to look oddly at me if I don't give them my last two employers as referees. Also, they won't referee check until after the interview, when you're on the short-list.

Interests I save to talk about at the interview. That's the sort of thing that's of interest to the people you will be working with, not the HR person who opens your application.

Tailor your CV to the job description - emphasise things that are relevant.

I start with contact details, then jobs (with a few bulletpoints saying what I did) - most recent first. I leave off irrelevant jobs. Then education (these days I just list degrees and universities, not courses and grades - I used to list them, because mine were good, but basically my work experience is more important now).

If you want to draft something and post it or PM it to me, I'd be happy to offer a few suggestions.

Yeah I'm looking into doing some volunteering now as a means of getting my foot in the door. Really should have done it while at uni but I couldn't be arsed at the time. :o

I'm probably going to knock up a CV tomorrow, fun fun fun! :|

Spade, I thought you'd be organising next years T in the Park by now? I was expecting free tickets.

Hah, nah, do some volunteer work. I (very, very tentatively) looked into doing that in Africa and swiftly did a 180 when I realised they were going to charge ME for the pleasure. Aye right 8)

Fuck we've been all over this before DR it doesn't have to be that way to do volunteer work. You can volunteer for free if you cut out the middlemen. Let me guess you were looking on websites like RealGap etc? Fuck them.

Look a bit harder and you'll find charities, organisations etc who'll let you go out and volunteer without it costing the earth. Usually you'll pay a small fee for food and accomodation and that's it. You'ld still need your flight ticket out to Afrika or where ever though. Can be done if you really want to do it.

It'd be an amazing and no doubt worthwhile experience but I'm not sure if it's what I want to do or not.

Probably just look for some volunteer work in the events industry in Edinburgh.

I hear you've went back to school you student scum bag? :p

How's it going?

*scouser accent* calm down calm down*

Erm, well if there are organisations out there that will send you over for dead cheap then cool - do it!

My ex did something like that in Zambia for a few months while she was at Uni and she's just gone back to do it again for a few months now that she has left Uni.

I haven't gone back to school, I'm not a peedo.

I've gone back to college. I'm doing Measurement & Control Engineering at Falkirk.

It's goin awright. It's a 52 mile round trip on the M8 and the M9 which is a cunt but apart from that its amazin. I never thought I'd get to see so many 16 year old hotties up close again. The place is hoachin wi fanny like %)

Haven't been in this week though because I have torn a muscle in my neck.

So are you not working just now? (are you on the dole? Are you on the dole? Are you on the dole? Are ye? Are ye? Are ye?)

=D

Find out which company / charity your bird does the volunteering through for me will you?

Aye college, school, whatever. 52 miles, fuck that though mate. Must be a college in Edinburgh you could have went to? Have you made some new friends? :D

Nah mate ain't working nor on the dole. Got back from my Euro trip about 2 weeks ago, back in Dundee for about another 2 weeks before I can move back to Edinburgh. I shall be signing on though when I get there until I get a job aye. :D

What's your plans after college?

Haha, so you'll be on the dole. After all the stick you gave me =D

Nah, none of the colleges in Edinburgh were suitable. They either didn't do the course or they were full up. It's a bugger but nothing worthwhile is easy eh?

My plans after college? I'll either be applying for jobs onshore or offshore or staying on to do an HNC.

The OPITO Apprenticeship is also an option but the thing with that is if I join then I'll be doing the same course with them that I'm doing right now which would be pointless so I need to speak wi them and see if they would take me on if I pass this year so they can put me straight into the second year.
