aye.. he started off shite and just maintained it though

if dylan had had the decency to die ten albums ago he would now be spoken of in the same misty eyed, reverential way people speak about lennon. musically speaking, you could argue he's about the only cunt out more influential to modern music than lennon, but one died more or less at his peak - and thus his icon status is untouchable forever more

i mean really, would fanboys still be wanking over every recorded cough & mumble of tupac if he was around today? doubtful

if tupac and biggie were still around they would be like jay z and the rest of them morons who put more time into opening nightclubs and starting fashion labels than making rap music.

I always felt like as long as the guy says some funny shit and stays with the beat, anyone can be a rapper. Its more about finding producers you like and listening to songs they made

show me a rapper... fucking hell, show me a music artist in general who doesnt go shite with age. thats why all the greats are dead, lennon, hendrix, morrisson etc.. they didnt have chance to become old and crap

Dunno if many have had the chance to get properly old yet. We've had deaths by shooting and AIDS so far which is surely as much as we can hope for :!

Also, The Goods feat Sixtoo, Buck 65, Knowself, Tachichi & Paul The Apostle - Saga - all considerably older now. All most likely better for it too. Is more about being actually good rather than able to hold it together for a single track/album really, no? Lotta the gangsta rappers tend to blow their loads early on cos is only so long you can get by on that kinda stuff. Quality lyrics and tunes last though.

And in reply to the OP, I prefer E as a straight-up rapper but Dre has better staying power and turned out some banging tunes in his day... that day passed quite some considerable time ago though :(

Dre has better staying power

You mean, he didn't catch aids...?

Anyone who knows their G's, knows that Eazy destroyed dre and snoop in this feud. Though Dre in himself was probably better as an overall better artist.

And, while I'm posting... did anyone else get confused between suge knight and phillip banks? For about 1 month in my life, I truly believed Suge Knight was Phillip Banks.

^ Oh, for the love of G̶o̶d̶. cream-cakes, I'm attracting American BL's with my gangsta rap threads now.

This is EADD man...you go back to the lounge and eat your high sugar doughnuts with soda...

rap has gone to shit. 50 cent with his I got shot 9 times bullshit, pity it didn't end him so my ears would feel better.

I felt the same way about hip-hop until that tune Yonkers by Tyler the Creator came out in 2011 and blew my mind, some of the young rappers in 2013 are absolutely killing it... Really excited for the new Earl Sweatshirt album 'Doris' due at the end of July.. Tell me this guy is not talented!! (also some more to look out for - Kendrick Lamar I'm sure has been mentioned, Freddie Gibbs, Joey Badass, Action Bronson, Danny Brown, Despot, Chance the Rapper & loads more I can't think of right now because im high as fuck - but I HONESTLY (I know I could be ridiculed for saying this!!) think that the next 4/5 years will be a golden age in hip-hop, the best era since the mid '90s).. Anyway, EARL is just on another level, only MF DOOM and Ghostface surpass this guy IMO and at 19 nobody has even been this talented for his age...

"Yeah, the Misadventures of a shit-talker
Pissed as Rick Ross's fifth sip off his sixth lager
Known to sit and wash the sins off at the pitch alter
Hat never backwards like the print off legit manga
Get it? Like a blue pill, make ya stick longer
Or a swift fist off your chin from his wrist launcher
Chick, chronic thrift shopper, thick like the Knicks roster
Stormed off and came straight back like fixed posture
Pen? Naw, probably written with some used syringes
From out the rubbish bin at your local loony clinic
Watching movies in a room full of goons he rented
On the hunt for clues, more food, and some floozy women
Bruising gimmicks with the broom he usually use for Quidditch
Gooey writtens, scoot 'em to a ditch, chewed and booty scented
Too pretentious, do pretend like he could lose to spitting
Steaming tubes of poop and twisted doobies full of euphemisms
Stupid, thought it up, jot it quick
Thought out, toss it right back like a vodka fifth
Spot him on a rocket swapping dollars in for pocket lint
Then lob a wad of chicken at a copper on some Flocka shit"

MF DOOM get's better with age and also Ghostface Killah - they are my two favourite rappers, neither of them has fallen off yet... but your general point is correct, these two are the exception to the rule

Because you're so much more qualified to speak on gangster rap than any American could ever be!

I'll start a thread on Oasis or The Stone Roses and then bitch when someone from England makes a post!

I could get ridiculed for this

no ridicule, we all have our own opinions. but i respectfully disagree. havent heard mf doom, but ghostface certainly isnt the rapper he was. kendrick lamar isnt anything special imo

just been listening to jehst;

every dialectic shapeshift a makeshift shield of hatred, i spit fire - quick fire - twist fire, rollin roach from a ripped flyer, tiptoeing over ego trip wire, softsteppin on eggshells as hell beckons, a bed of black rose petals on my twenty second, with twenty seconds on the clock ive kept many guessing, a game of death threats met with defiance, so i bring stones for riots, while the right side of the brain extends through computer science, flicks fictionalise our lives, in alliance with the queen in the core of the hive - breeding parasites, the wise read and analyse the scrolls, stolen souls disolve in alcohol, i hold hope for the world, i chart progress in this painstaking process, elimination of the grotesque no less

I have to disagree on Ghost his new album is epic, also Kendrick is really good - his album has to be listened to as a whole concept album, the singles don't make much sense as standalone tracks.. But DOOM for me is so far ahead of anyone it's scary, you should really try to check him out man he can be hard to get into it a lot of his lyrics are very abstract & some people don't like him at all but I find it hard to go back & listen to other rappers after I've been listening to DOOM.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJGupAjQ0s0

This song is basically him telling how nice he is on the mic in funny ways, flaunting his skills as an MC which is the essence of rap really - "He wears a mask just to cover the raw flesh / A rather ugly brother with flows that's gorgeous"

This one is from the 'Madvillainy' record (DOOM & Madlib).. Opening line "the rest is empty with no brain but the clever nerd / the best MC with no chain ya ever heard"

I like MF Doom a reasonable amount but I never found him to be far and ahead of everyone else. In fact, I don't even really like a lot of his songs I just really like a couple of his songs.

He does say a lot of clever stuff but his voice is so monotone and unpalatable. And idk if I'm the only one who thinks this but his flow is pretty lame too. even Kurious sounded more like he was just talking instead of trying to rap then MF

No you wouldn't be the first to say that, DOOM seems to divide opinion more than most artists but I love his flow, he does switch it - I understand his voice can sound monotonous, I just love him as an artist certainly my favourite by some distance.. Well I think Outkast back in the day might be my favourites along with him..

Blind Helper I hadn't listened to Jehst b4 he sounds nice tho cheers for the heads up
