Dutch students have developed powdered alcohol which they say can be sold legally to minors.

The latest innovation in inebriation, called Booz2Go, is available in 20-gramme packets that cost 1-1.5 euros (70 pence-1 pound).

Top it up with water and you have a bubbly, lime-coloured and -flavoured drink with just 3 percent alcohol content.

"We are aiming for the youth market. They are really more into it because you can compare it with Bacardi-mixed drinks," 20-year-old Harm van Elderen told Reuters.

Van Elderen and four classmates at Helicon Vocational Institute, about an hour's drive from Amsterdam, came up with the idea as part of their final-year project.

"Because the alcohol is not in liquid form, we can sell it to people below 16," said project member Martyn van Nierop.

The legal age for drinking alcohol and smoking is 16 in the Netherlands.

In Germany, alcopops -- sweet drinks containing alcohol and in powder form -- caused quite a stir when launched on to the market. Alcohol powder, classified as a flavouring, was sold in the United States three years ago.

The students said companies interested in making the product commercially could avoid taxes because the alcohol was in powder form. A number of companies are interested, they said.

Alcohol of course cannot exist as a solid at room temps, I believe the theory was that they are actually saturating lactose or other binders which the alcohol kinda piggybacks on.

Or am I totally off base?

Interesting. Id like to know the chemistry behind it.

And is it possible to ramp up the percentage?

they probably just soaked a bunch of sawdust in everclear, and then let it sit under a fan for a week

Would that not evap all the alcohol?

Also, I think snorting it would taste just like pixie stix, which many kids snort already...

If they were in the U.S., then these students would be said underage market.

Just out of curiousity, can any Dutch person here comment on the chances of this stuff becoming controlled?

Sodium ethoxide (the sodium salt of ethanol) is highly basic, and would dissolve your insides if you consumed it.
 
another way of approachng a powdered alcohol would be to use an ester type prodrug which is hydrolysed to alcohol and a weak acid. or a several more complex prodrugs.

for another example a prodrug form of alcohol and an acid which when mixed in water the acid breaks down the prodrug, this mixture would be stable in the abscence of water.

I would guess that booze2go is nothing like as clever and consists of sugar or another carbohydrate containing a very small amount of alcohol absorbed onto it. I make the content to be 3g or so in 20g of bulking stuff flavourings etc.

Either ways it would still be prohibited for sale to minors in the UK, because no court is going to believe it isn't intended for consumption and they aren't going to draw any distinction between power and liquid, expecially as the alcohol isn't actually solid it consists of tiny pools of alcohol inside a sugar or carbohydrate. they would also have to pay duty here.

much hype and not much substance seems to be the case here.

Has anyone ever made an alcohol prodrug? I would think there would be a significant illicit market for alcohol pills.
