Dubai Court Sentances Woman To Life For Selling A Joint

^ All drugs should be legal. To ensure purity, manufactured drugs should be labeled with the amounts of their active ingredients. For example, wine and liquor are required to be labeled with their alcohol content. The medical community should only educate and give advice. Adults should be able to buy any drug they want at their local liquor store or pharmacy (unless you want to grow it yourself).

So fucked up, don't expect any better in Dubai though, where they give people 4 year sentences for poppy seeds and miniscule amounts of marijuana on the bottom of their shoes.

Oh, come on. As much as I am against ANY laws against personal possession of a drug, there is a world of difference between possession of a few joints and possession of 650g of coke. Even the biggest cokehead in the world is not going to have 650g of cocaine for personal use only. QUOTE]

This is where I fundamentally disagree. I don't believe there are absolute limits with regards to amounts of drugs necessarily being for one use, while different amounts are necessarily for another. Prison sentances, particularly life sentances, should not be based on these assumption- yet they are.

I was always under the impression that their laws are what they are due to religious reasons.

And our laws are what they are not because of religious reasons. (At least not mostly because of religion.)

Wrong?

I'm not entirely sure. various Central, East and Southeast Asian nations have similar heavy handed and obscene penalties for drug possession/sale, I'm not sure how many or which of these nations base their laws on religious interpretation.

Though given the global economic and political situation for the last 90 years, I highly doubt that many of these foreign governments would have instituted or continued such policies without the approval and aid of the US government.

My friend wrote "Never, under any circumstance, go to Dubai" on his wall for just such things..
Life? That's fucked man :( Hope she'll get out.

Forgive me if I'm getting a little frustrated, but I said quite clearly in my first post that I am against all laws against personal possession of drugs. And if drugs ever became legal, we wouldn't have street dealers pushing heroin anyway, so my point stands. It would still be illegal for any old moron to sell LEGAL drugs. It is right now. If I decided I wanted to sell DXM out of my house, I would face some serious charges.

We already have too many laws limiting freedom. Let a free market decide who can sell drugs. Unless taxes are excessive, most people would rather buy a pure drug from a major company where contents and strength are accurately labelled than from some guy on the street selling selling a mystery drug. Just prohibit sales to minors.

The rich history of the Islamic peoples is all but ignored in the West. Unfortuntately, this blackout on the cultural and intellectual acheivements of the Arab, Persian and Central Asian races leads American and European children, generation after generation, to believe there simply is no history worth speaking of- aside from the one currently portrayed by Western politicians of women-stoning, dance prohibiting RPG wielding fundamentalists.

I do find your claim interesting. Are you determining the value of an entire nationality based on the drug laws of that particular nation? If so I don't think you will find a single nation on earth worthy of admiration or praise. In which case all peoples of the world would be undeserving of respect because every nation-state has prohibitionist drug laws with varying degrees of tyranny.

I guess other nations look to the West for a path to modernity, and are repeating our sins. Only now it is different religious authorities and state apparatus performing the rights-trampling.
]

Bingo, most of the world is eager to appear "modern" and copying the US is one such way. Another problem is the ruling class in most of these nations spend a lot of time in the US and our culture is contagious.

But one thing puzzles me, piss testing tourists and imprisoning them?! WHY, what purpose does this even serve besides discouraging tourism and wasting your nations coffers paying for three hots and a cot? I remember someone was imprisoned there for testing positive for codeine, and then someone in Dubai said codeine was OTC there.:|
Not to mention the poppy seed guy, that case made NO sense.

So does anyone know whats really going on here? It makes no sense at all to hassle tourists like this, it makes no sense to imprison people for having OTC drugs in their piss. Combing through someones clothes looking for poppy seeds?

No there has to be a piece of the puzzle we're not getting, are these arrests really being used as weapons against "enemies' or critics?

These countries disgust me, they seriously need to get over their "I am a hard ass." routine and just let up. This is an outrage.

That's brutal.

Can you imagine what that woman would be feeling. Her whole existence is completley ruined.

But surely she would have known the drug laws in her own country? SURELY it is not worth risking your life to sell a few joints, and she openly admitted to people how much she sells and how much she has. I have to wonder what the hell she was thinking when she started this joint selling business..

It's a shame that she got such a big sentence for that but on the other hand she should know better than to deal drugs in a foreign country. If the stash is only worth $130 why even risk it? Making some pocket change isn't worth life in prison.

Saddest thing I've heard in a while. This is even more sad than William Pickard getting life in prison for making LSD.

Some asian countries execute drug traffickers.

Fucking ridiculous.

Also, I have some good friends who are from Lebanon and some from UAE (Dubai). They are great people (and really nice). I don't really understand the hate some Americans have for Arabs.
