Drugs to aid with public speaking?

truth

wow, I promise this is true

for my final presentation in "Business and Professional Speaking" in college
i was so fucking nervous it was horrible

so like 45 minutes before i went in i took 15mg of valium and a small shot of hennessey(cognac)

i sailed through my presentation and actually enjoyed doing it, but i was well prepared jsut nervous as HELL

try gabatrophen. it is a legal "nootropic". feels in a way like nuerontin, which is another drug that i'd say might help with public speaking anxiety.

Exstasy umm...I don't think I would pick that one. I think someone would notice your jaw clenching not to mention some of the weird shit you say that doesn't make much since. You would be up there lookin like this 8o lol.

blue hypocrite

why dont you explain how this thread which youve posted in, basically what is the best drug for public speaking differs from my thread you pounced on and closed, which was what is the best drug for pain relief?

Ok IMO i would take DXM. Maybe like jst 150-250mg maybe? That would atleast make me calm down for a while (but come to think of it i would take DXM for anything ;)) so maybe thats just me. You might looked pretty f**ked up but o well.

Yeah oC's might work but when I do it i can't think quite right. So you might screw up just talking. Good Luck

PLEASE don't follow that person's advice and take ecstasy before you speak publicly. that is a disaster waiting to happen. benzos are perfect for this, but if you do not have access to benzos, i'm going to recommend dr. bach's flower essences. i use 'aspen' for nervousness and it works just fine even though i'm used to benzos. stay off of the weed for a little bit before you speak, too.

Yay to all the people who said beta-blockers! (nox first I think). Also - be prepared, avoid stimulants before hand (including caffeine). BUT if you want to really kill performance nerves - perform as often as possible! Propanolol will do the trick, but the best rush is when you ride that wave of nerves through to the end. And that takes practice.

As to what I ACTUALLY do (did) - not so much public speaking as playing in rock bands - drink beer. Try and titrate dose so still coordinated enough to play (kind of works and pretty acceptable for rock - maybe not for some public speaking gigs!)

I took propanolol for 2 weeks when I had a cluster headache - made me very emotionally flat; everything was just 'meh - whatever'. I think you would have to watch your dose if using this drug before public speaking - you need SOME fire ;)

Beta blockers

Today my Dr. me a beta blocker instead of xanax (gee thanks) for hypertension. She said specifically that it helps performance axiety and is often taken by people about to go on stage or in front of a large group.

It basically prevents your blood pressure and heart rate from rising in tense situations.

I guess the average dosage is 160 -320 mg.

I'm taking propranolol. I think that mixed with .5mg of xanax and you would be still with it, but relaxed enough to get thru whatever it is you have to do.

Two more things:
1. I think it is much easier to get a Dr. to give you a beta blocker then xanax.
2. Have you ever tried Kratom? You make tea out of it. Smaller doeses make you relaxed but stimulated, larger doeses just relax you. I always find that I am still able to articulate and comprehend very well. Check it out.

Speed all the way...couple of points of amp, double shot of strong coffee, run around the block and you'll be ready to take on the world.

The key is low doses.

One hit of cannabis really slows things down and lets me focus. However, it can also produce a little bit of mental cloudiness. If you know what you're talking about, go for it.

Same thing applies to alcohol.

I'm pretty inexperienced with opiates but I imagine they'd be nice for public speaking.

Benzos obviously.

I would recommend against any stims. You're already jittered and rushing if you're baseline, why add to that? I guess you could say they give an overall sense of confidence but I think the other effects would negate any benefit from confidence.

It depends what kind of speech you're giving, really. If you're giving an informational or persuasive speech, people are going to want you to talk slower and clearly, so as to better understand your points.

If you're telling some kind of story or giving a more informal, off the cuff kind of speech, I guess I could see throwing a stimulant into the mix.

Again, the key is low doses.

amusing responses

yes with the beta blockers.....i cannot believe that some of the suggestions are serious....e!!!8o 8o

meth and ghb8( 8(

if social anxiety is a serious problem....maybe an ssri as a long term solution if u do lots of public speaking=D =D

I would say benzos. I've done speeches on stimulants and such before, and though you may think you're making sense... you're really not. Benzos will just chill you the fuck out.

^^
an added benefit of going for the benzo's is that they don't fuck around with your pupil size , my pupils seem to be extremely sensitive to drugs and that's why I definately wouldn't go for Amphetamines or Opiates (even low dose)
