ok i know all the main drugs one tends to use for opiate w/d. clonidine, lomotil, etc etc. I am using subutex to detox but still get the chills.
All I am looking for is something that controls your temperature regulation as this is the main reason for my relapses in the initial phase. I just cant stand being soooo cold, any ideas?
and for any neurobiologists out there to satisfy my curiosity what transmitter causes this, too much norapinepherine?

My friend, Clonidine is your answer! Clonidine ia a high blood pressure medication that regulates blood pressure and body temperture. As your blood pressure rises due to opiate withdrawl you experience fever and chills along with muscle cramps etc. Clonidine will control this aspect of your withdrawl....also Immodium AD(Liquid form only)will help, since it is a mild opiate it helps with symptons. Also Trazadone will help with sleep,it is non-habit forming so you can take it unlike Xanax for witbdrawl.

Dr. Dopenstien had some good points and some things I disagree with..
Look, yer temperature is one of those things yer body does saying "I need more dope" .. well, as the ood doctor said, take some codeine or a (reasonable) dose of hydrocodone (or even oxycodone) .. you simpply need SOMETHING to satisify yer bodies need for that receptor binding..
As for Amodium - the jury is out. .. it has worked really well for some and does nothingfor others - YMMV ..
Where I disagree is the whole dangerof forminga benzos habbit - look, yerkicking, you wanna get through itthen take 4mg Xanax or 20mg Valium, 5mg Klonopin or whatever.... yeah, you can get addicited and the withdrawla can even be fatal - but honestly, if yer just looking to kick then benzos are your friend....

Phreex perhaps you should post the link to your guide to opiate withdrawl, I can't seem to find it after I did a search.
I used Aleve + Immodium AD when coming off my year long addiction to Hydrocodone.

To get onto the cold thing a little more... for me anyways, feeling cold is one of the longest lasting symptoms of opiate withdrawal. After the runny nose, heavy perspiration, feet clenching, twitching, insomnia, oversleeping, exhaustion, mood swings and eratic behavior are totally gone, I still feel cold. It takes about 3-4 weeks before I get over it.
Last August when it was between 90-100 degrees out, I wasn't working while I was trying to quit. My house was about 75. And I was shivering while wearing long pants and a sweatshirt. I would actually have to sit outside to feel warm. And lord knows what my neighbors thought with me sitting on the front porch chainsmoking dressed like that.
I've only tried Clonadine twice when it was given to me by a friend. I was going through the peak of withdrawals after using for 6 months straight and it was pretty worthless. I didn't feel any noticeably better. Then again, if it helped with the cold feelings, I don't know. I just remember feeling so horribly sick I wanted to die.
Anymore when I see questions where someone is asking about an easy way to detox, my first reaction is to be like "you're detoxing from heroin, what do you expect!?" But then again, I was asking these same questions during my several failed attempts to kick.
If you have Subutex to help you ease off instead of going cold turkey, you're really lucky. And if you can get Clonadine from your doctor or whoevers supplying you with the Subutex, great. It will probably help out to some extent.
But the bottom line is, there is no easy way to detox. There is no way to make it painless (unless maybe you do one of those rapid-detox things). If you're using the Subutex just to ease off and not as maintainence, you're going to have to stop taking that, too, and it's going to suck and you're going to feel miserable and want to die for a week or two. You'll probably start questioning why you even wanted to quit in the first place and start thinking it's not worth it. You know you've only got to go 7-14 days and you'll be okay, but it seems like an eternity. You start questioning if you can even do it without realizing how irrational you sound. There's just no easy way to quit. And the only thing that really makes it better is knowing that if you do it now instead of later, it won't be as bad.
And what's really scary is to know if you wanted to experience hell you'd need only develop a serious opiate addiction and quit cold turkey. But even after going through it SEVERAL times and having gotten yourself straight is that it's so easy to relapse again even when you're telling yourself you're going to have to go through it again.

I quite cold turkey and honestly feeling cold is the least of your worries. You have to understand that you WILL feel uncomfortable, its just part of the deal you get when getting addicted. The thing that fucked with me the most was the depression and the hunger for the drug.
I suggest you wean yourself off and go with Aleve and Immodium. I wish I would have seen Phreex's guide before quitting cold turkey, but oh well hehe... good luck.

Thanks for you comments guys. I have gone through w/d on and off for about 13 years, although i had been clean for a year and started using again 4months ago, this time i am gonna last longer than a year at being clean. Last time i w/d the cold feelings lasted 2 months after all the other symptoms had gone. I do know what to expect nowadays - ha i should hope so afer all this time. But for me it is one of the most pervasive and annoying aspects that seem to get me to re-use even though i have managed to get through all the rest.
I have tried clonidine but i dont think i used enough anyone got any ideas on dosage here?
AND if any of you have been given antidepressents for post w/d what sort did you use and were they any good?????

I went to a 2 week detox where all they gave me was a clonidine patch. It was a gutwrenching 2 weeks and i left wanting to use more
clonidine i think is good for chills but not for aches (which is what bothers me the most.) immodium does do much for me. And trazadone is the only thing that will knock me out when kicking although I hate it. benzos always help.

Look, it's really simple - beatingnarcotics withdrawal isn't easy, if it were, then everyone would use then take some magic "dexotx" pill that would instantly make them better... yer gunna suffer, end of story ... but hey, IMO it's worth it!

If "Cold Turkey" is a 10 on the pain scale....Having Clonidine, Xanax, Trazadone, and Immodium AD makes it a 5!! Not to bad, when your fighting for every little bit of relief....Right guys?

The only thing I ever found that could get rid of those cold feelings (besides opiates) was exercise. After running a few miles, I felt good as normal for a couple hours. Then back to the chills.
Like others here have said, it just sucks. My advice is to 1) get yourself into a situation where it is VERY difficult to get opiates -- take a vacation, move in with a non-using friend, visit relatives, whatever. And 2) GET BENZOS. They take care of the insomnia, and you can sedate yourself through the worst withdrawals.
If you can get through the first few weeks, it is very, VERY much worth it.
