LONDON (Reuters) - A police sniffer dog died of a suspected overdose while out hunting for drugs, British police said on Monday.



Todd, a 7-year-old Springer spaniel, had been looking for drugs in a field and car in Preston, northern England, when his handler noticed he was looking unwell.

He was taken to a vet and then rushed to an animal intensive care unit at Liverpool University, displaying symptoms of ingesting amphetamines, a Lancashire police spokeswoman said.

He died shortly afterwards.

The death was said to have devastated Todd's handler, Police Constable Roger Moore, his wife and two young children.

"He (Todd) lived with them and they would all go for walks with him -- he was their dog," Sergeant Peter Crane of Preston's dog unit told the Daily Mirror.

"He's going to be very difficult to replace, but police work is dangerous and unfortunately Todd has become a casualty."

Police said a post mortem on Todd was being carried out.

seriously.. this article made me smile.. i was once terrorized by a drug sniffing dog while I was on acid.. I watched the dog sniff my car while all our pot was on our persons.. horrifying experience... sorry pooch.. but your master sent you into a mine-field. BOOM!

that sucks that that happend to that dog but i guess it was a bad cop if it was tryin to do meth.

The RSPCA (or relative authority in whatever country this is in) should charge the cops for killing the dog by making it take drugs...
 
thats pretty sad if you think about it. the dogs dont want to bust people they've just been enslaved by cops because they're good at sniffin' out stuff. its like if a human slave was made to pick cotton until he/she died of exaustion. disgusting i'd say. fuckin' pigs

LOL, i can just picture a dog... sitting there with a bic lighter and a tube rolling it back and forth with his eyes poping out as he exhaled a HUGE hit

So are you against people keeping pets aswell? Police dogs are looked after very well, and the work is just a game to them. K-9 units arn't just used for sniffing drugs, they have many other very important and practicle uses aswell.
 
i think that Todd the dog was posthumously kicked off the police force for not only consuming illegal substances, but also for oding on the job. thats just totally unprofessional.
 
I wouldn't care if it was some mean ass attacking K9 german shepherd but this was a Springer Spaniel. They are very nice dogs. It's funny to laugh about but it would suck if that was my dog...
