What the fuck are you rambling about? Pynchon might be a good author, but he clearly isn't a good scientist. The majority of the world would have died young if it weren't for modern medicine, including myself. What utter tripe, followed by your own injection of bullshit for good measure. I'll leave it to your idiot groupies to praise you for yet another utterly nonsensical tirade.

erm, I think he was joking MSB. I saw it as mash up and half fabricated fantasy building from the previous posts between him and sam and whatever. I thought it was funny as hell, I don't think he was attacking you maliciously

I'm aware that it was a joke, but I didn't really find it funny or clever. I just found it a pretentious and poor attempt at satire. Whether or not my name came into it, I had already decided after the last hilarious load of crap that I couldn't take watching the brown nosing that would inevitably ensue. The only posts that are stupider in this thread belong to eir and sam.

eh, that doesn't really sit right. There was no tirade it makes no sense that it was both.

Why do people agreeing with each other, or showing appreciation for one another have to be brown nosing? It's not like Charlie is here for validation, people say those things because it's refreshing to hear what Charlie says, and how he presents a point, or yarn ... he's got the kind of writing skill that inspires that kind of appreciation. Why write people off as brown nosers so flippantly?

Because anyone could write like a pretentious prick if they were so inclined. It's not refreshing in any way, you just pull up a chair so you can feel smart. Like I said, Will Self wannabe.

I think he is a knob, who targets just slightly above bottom of the barrel for people who like to think highly of themselves, so that they can feel like they are part of the intelligensia.
 
I'm not going down the Will Self route, it takes a certain degree of abstract thinking to understand him, and ability to shelve ones beliefs before taking a pew. I can understand why he's not to your liking. He's an insanely intelligent bloke tho, with a beautiful attitude to humanity. Slightly above the bottom of the barrel? Hah! I think Will would probably LOVE to have that audience. [edit] I take it you haven't read any of his books, but you're making a sweeping judgement from his QT appearances and occasional Guardian articles?

Prick follows from pretention in my mind. It is why most people who dislike me on here dislike me after all. Charlie is not in and of himself a prick though. It doesn't stop him from behaving like one at least temporarily though. I understand exactly what Will Self is saying, he is just saying it in a way that everyone understands but a select few will think they're special for getting it. He is about as easy to 'get' as Banksy. What you mean by shelving one's beliefs, is that you must pull up a pew agreeing with his views before you even sit down. Even if I agree with some of his viewpoints I still strong dislike his style. I am well aware of how intelligent Will Self is, and that just makes it all the more annoying that he puts on this act. I don't know why certain people prefer this act of being talented and cultured (which does take a certain amount of effort and intelligence), over actually being talented and cultured.
 
Will Self would partly agree with what you're saying, you know that right? (you don't but I'll tell you why, so you will in a few lines)

See his latest interview in the Guardian. He writes fiction. Lots of books. He is not a presenter or panelist very often. He writes with the following approach

For Self, the party is definitely elsewhere. It's just that his party might not sound much fun to someone in search of an engrossing beach read. Umbrella, after all, is predicated on the modernist belief that it is only in the rejection of conventional linear structure and unity of plot that essential truth will be found.
 
I'll give reading one of his books a go in the near future then. Lots of writers are total knobs in real life, it comes with the territory. Maybe his style is different for writing fiction, or it is at least more suited to it.
