I would just like to point out, on the topic of ammonium salts, that one of my favorite type of candy they sell here contains ammonium chloride. In fact, I just bought a lot of them yesterday. The LD50 is 1650 mg/kg, oral in rats and it's considered both harmful and irritant. The whole damn country is consuming this stuff with no apparent ill effects, in fact they put it as a flavoring in booze too and it's a big hit.

EDIT: Also, a long time ago when I was around the age 14 and we had a chemistry class in school, we made the stuff and ate/tasted it too, all under the instruction of our teacher.
