Does anyone know of a reason NOT to take opiates?

Caffeine

Matt_Himself said:
2. Having taken 4 caffeine pills daily for 4 years (all through high school) I can say the caffeine "buzz" is not better. And you know what else is funny? I quit smoking cigarettes, and it sucked. Ive been through opiate withdrawal, and it also sucked alot. But caffeine withdrawal from that dose (800mg a day) was debatably the worst withdrawal I had. The headaches became so bad I could not roll over in bed without causing enough nausea to make me puke in a bucket. Opiate withdrawal is absolutely miserable, but I could always take some suboxone and be fixed up enough to get the day. I dont think they make a caffeine detox medicine yet, and frankly, I pray nobody felt what I did that week.

Cheers for the info on caffeine... I understand that all drugs have their negatives, but it seems that it is all about managing how much and when we use them.

I understand that the chinese used to smoke opium for centuries before the west decided that it was a bad thing. Very few documented addicts were mentioned in the literature... until it was made illegal!

Anyone else have any comments about other "legal" drugs that have negative symptoms when withdrawing? I am keen to put all this into perspective.

Just a note: kids in australia can get a packet of 100x100mg caffeine pills for $7. I just think that is funny considering the quote above. 8(

caffeine withdrawal is agonizing. i have been taking between 100mg and 1g a day (usually between 100-300mg daily) for three years. when i stop, i feel like i'm going to explode.

i dare you to try quitting caffeine and quitting opiates at the same time, though, if you want severe.

people talk about opiates like its the death of anyone who does them. ive been using opiates for 8 years and never picked up a habit. i can use and stop. i only use pills. i dont shoot up

--- Well stop right there. You DON"T shoot up. Complete WASTE of opiates. To me, if your not using a good opiate (dilaudid/heroin/fent/etc), and your not shooting it up, your not getting NEAR the experiance you could. And how many people really stay chippers ? Eating a few morphine pills every month is NOTHING like what people get addicted to.

^^^ right, and if i did shoot up id be addicted. i know my limits. ive done H and liked it about half of the time. ive shot 3-4 times and sniffed twice, but they were all black tar and i just cant see using that crap all the time. ive never done dilaudud, but ive shot demerol and wore a fent patch, and wasnt impressed with the high, but as painkillers i can see the potential.

Jim Jones may be an expert at the fade away (BALLIN'), but he also does a lot of drugs (BALLIN'!!!!!!). Jim thinks that your perspective on opiate use is ignoring the fact that opiates are dangerous as hell. Not that they'll kill you, but using any exogenous substance with the notion "hey it makes everything better" will lead you to disaster. Enjoy opiates, but enjoy them responsibly. DIP SET!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Word. Good advice and I thank you for the laugh. I just got out of Detox/Rehab and I needed that.

I have a question, what the fuck is the point of this thread other then to TRY to justify addiction when in reality, when is it ever justifiable or reasonable, muchless acceptable to become dependant on a substance. Never, but everyone does it. However, people having their own addictions, etc, should not need a reason to keep the addiction going, they should have one to stop it.

The point is that there is a lot of information out there about the use of opiates for the purpose of pain relief. However people use opiates for pain relief, but also for many other reasons. This is not about addiction or anything to do with it, it is to find out peoples experiences and opinions about the use of opiates for purposes other than pain relief. Granted it is a round about way of achieving this, but it is people like you who do not allow the rest of us to understand the complex interactions humans have with chemicals, and how these interactions can be helpful/harmful. Hope that explains the reason for you. I believe most people would realize this anyhow...

I understand the fact that people use opiates / opioids for other things than as powerful analgesics. I mean, anti-tussive, and other effects that come from opiates is calming. But the reality is, slowed muscle contractions, decreased CNS, etc, are really meant for treatment of conditions. Anxiety, among other things are treated with tranquilizers. Why do you think doctors prescribe alprazolam instead of oxycodone or hydromorphone? (being vague) Its the fact that opiates / opioids have limited numbers of acceptable uses. People think that something is effective because of a pop culture relationship to it, a mere myth. Success doesn't mean effectiveness, it just means good marketing among other things. You start pushing for something to do something its not meant to be used for simply because a possible occurance through the use of a drug is that symptoms of something are decreased, and sooner or later your going to be dealing with pretty poor treatment problems. There are safer, more effective, cheaper, and longer lasting alternatives, not to mention less addiction prone, more bearable in terms of withdrawal, etc, for the things that people use opiates / opioids for in almost every aspect.

Deal with the fact that opiates are used because the synthetics, the future of pharmacology is really still in the pipeline, but not necessarily the reality today. If ofcourse the synthetics were here today being compared against opiates / opioids we'd be dealing with various studies highlighting contrasts between them, and in my opinion, everythings replaced eventually, its just a matter of finding something that can really replace what has been the norm without losing effectiveness, becoming cheaper, and being safer. Trust me, with natural human progression and intellectual growth, we'll have replacements. 10 years is a good amount of time, it may go by quickly, but at the same time, a lot of advancements can be made in that same time.

I wasn't getting at legitamet uses of opiates / opioids for analgesic effects, what I was getting at before was self-medication of symptoms either real or imaginary and the way in which people claim the drugs help relieve their symptoms while proper diagnosis, and a proper treatment without the harm, addiction, etc, would be the realistic common sense option.

Don't get up in arms over defending a set of chemicals, you'll lose the battle trust me, we don't need anything, we just think we do. Death is a mere end to the beginning, and making something "bearable" through the use of self-destructive nature over a class of drugs I personally find to be some of the most despisable ones. I mean honestly, who the fuck wants to sit around with sugar cravings and anal bleeding from lack of fiber and opiate use. I made a bit exagerated claims with caffeine, etc, but the truth is, the buzz ain't worth the bang. You understand what I'm saying. You gotta look at both sides, not one, saying hey, its effective at something but who cares if its illegal, it works for me, and I'll do it but just to be sure lets find others so even if there is a doubt, I still know there are other fucking morons with the lacking intelligence following my same set of ideas.

Anyways, fuck it, I'm a stimulant man. I personally love psychosis, the slight nausea, etc, and it may be detremental to my health, but its enjoyable to me. Its basically as fucked up as a thing as you using opiates / opioids (well not you the quoted posted, but people in general), but the difference between me and you, I'm getting work done yet your sitting on your asses asleep with your colon giving you shits so painful and withdrawals so fucked you want to stranggle yourselfs. To me? I get a withdrawal of a like 12 hour night sleep after a long use, and never a craving other than to drink some water, take some Vitamin C and get something to eat. I think I'll take the stims over opiates, my digestive system is valued by me, you know, cause I like to drop my regular morning glory while reading the newspaper getting ready for the day.

I'm pretty fucking tired and I rambled a lot there in the post, sorry, but you should be able to get the idea of things.

Im an engineer.... i work all day, 6 days a week...I get the idea though.

60 or so 10 or 7.5 was it mg hydrocodone's several years ago over 3 days' time gave me a case of constipation not to be forgotten.

Many ppl have died unexpectedly (?) from opiates.
40mg oxy (no thank you!) almost did me in once.
luckily the ice probably kept me alive, you know--or just feeling good anyway.

Yes, similiar story here. However, if we get busted just one time - say, just from a routine traffic stop with a pissed off cop, or something just as whimsical, there's a good chance we'll go to jail for a long time, and that'll fuck up any chance of being "successful" in life.

Of course, you can avoid jail time if you spend on a good liar. Spend lots, lots, lots of money.

And there's no reason our lives wouldn't have the same quality, if not better, if we just never used in the first place. Ignorance is bliss, maybe. Whatever.

I am starting this thread to find out others opinions on when it is NOT a good time to take opiates.

I am interested as I find opiates are good in all situations, and find it hard to think of a time when it would not be a good idea to use opiates.

I take opiates to improve my mood, to help me think clearly, and to make my life generally more enjoyable.

I find the only time that opiates do not make my life better is in bed. I find I cannot achieve orgasm, however I do get the ability to make love for hours on end... which has its benifits as well... apart from this, i cannot think of any other problems.

As far as I can tell, there is many more positives than negatives about opiate use, so feel free to add your opinions about when it is not a good time to take them.

Feel free to discuss any opiate here.

Reasons not to take them yeah I got one! How about you dont get it until you get it...and when you "get it" its too fucking late. I'm an opiate addict of 5 years everyday, and I will tell you something you need to know. QUIT. Just say fuck it, dont do the shit. I miss the days of being able to go outside and just breathe and say "ahhhhh..." and have a natural feeling of goodness. after you use opiates for a long enough time you will never get a buzz, you will feel like shit all the time, or you will be in withdrawal, either or sucks a big one. There are no positive uses for opiates besides 99 yr old ladys who cant go to there mailbox unless they took an 80, thats it, no if and or buts about it. I have more willpower than anyone on this fucking planet, and I thought I could keep control of it. I started using for fun on fri, sat instead of drinking, than I didnt go to partys, "I prefer to dine alone!!"(spider from charmed{evil}) and than all of a sudden you wake up 3 years later sucking some cancer patients dick so you can find out exactly when and where he gets all his patches so you can steal them, than you hit up grammas house and steal her bottle of change, and than on and on. I WAS A TRI-SPORT, ALL-A student with no criminal background or record, I had support, and good family, ........ NOW ive got my life back but not my body and Im not sure Iever will. I had to earn my soul back day by day and it was nothing short of a miracle that I am alive today and disease free, and I mean miracle. SO DONT USE OPIATES THEY ARE NOT WORTH IT.

but if your going to, dont do them days in a row, keep a week in between at least if you can. I dont think I ever got really sick until I started using day after day after day.

Best of luck to you, my whole soul prays for you and others like you who still think that opiates can be used experiementally. DO SHITLOADS OF mushrooms instead...way better choice.
:\ :X :(

I'm a day-by-day user and it's certainly not an experiment. ;(

Moron

Not For Nothing But, If You Don't Already Know The Adverse Effects Of Opiate Use Then You Are A Complete Moron. Besides Being The Most Addictive Drugs, The Come Down Off Them, If You Are Strong Enough To Do It Is Horrible. Take It From Someone Who Knows First Hand. Yes They Make You Feel Great For The Moment But, The The Long Term Effects Are Just Not Worth The High!
