Opioids Does anyone in the U.S. do opium anymore?

If you are lucky and able to obtain some latex opium, do not waste it by smoking.

Laudanum is the way to go: Dissolve it in small amount of alcohol (brandy, whisky, port wine) and drink it.

Attempts to prepare smokable material from poppy pods are even more foolish. Ofc, it's possible (alkaline ethanol could be handy here), but very, very wasteful.

No. Opium is not a form still used commonly in the United States. I believe what you're asking is, not is it physically possible to obtain it within the borders of the country, but more, is there any kind of active market for this in the United States and the answer is a hard no. I think all of us have a story of being sold fake Opium in our youth... and that was 15 years ago, there was hardly any Opium then. If you do encounter it, it would be either on a lark or following some kind of determined operation to locate it. Anything can be bought on the darkweb and I don't believe it's sourcing to say something so obvious.

If you're wanting to try Opioids and you don't want to endanger yourself, your best bet is to find someone who has some Codeine laying around from their wisdome tooth extraction and buy it off of them. In case you aren't aware, Opium is 88% plant matter, 10% Morphine, 2% Codeine (generally). Furthermore, Codeine is metabolized into Morphine anyway, so taking Codeine tablets at the appropriate dose should be hardly any different than Opium at an equipotent dosage.

“I never tried that, but I have both evaporated the tea and juiced the pods in a wheatgrass juicer evaporating that. The resultant "pod tar" I would equate to very poor "grade D" opium. You can get a buzz, but you smoke and smoke it leaving a bunch of dross unburnt behind and it's hard or impossible to get a decent high. It works better making a tea (I usually also ate the leftover pod after) Even with just the tea, It takes a while to come on and is notorious for giving a very long lasting high.”@Brokedownpalace10

ditto
From what I recall, opium’s affects regardless of the collection effort, depends on it’s alkaloid content and ratio’s. TLDR kinda like the effects of mescaline alone differ from cactus e.g. yotes alk content includes maoi activity i believe producing a full spectrum experience

Poppies.org

Ah yes, that was it. That was a fun site. I liked reading through grow-diaries from different parts of the world and admire the pictures that came with them. I remember "pod tar" and I also remember "pod putty", but i'm not sure if they were two different things.

And they did have different methods people tried to purify it some more. One was freezing it partially and pouring the liquid off leaving the partially frozen stuff behind in a process similar to making applejack.

Holy shit! This triggered a memory. Do you recall that the guy who introduced that technique to the forum called it his "ice-o-lation" technique?! It was a brilliant name. Very clever.

Yeah, that was my experience as well, and that was the last time I bothered with trying to do anything fancy with the precious few flowers I'd grown that season. Still, that was a fun time and I have fond memories of that website.

there is something about pod tea that gives a nice, long lasting high

The magic of opium. Supposedly morphine is the main alkaloid that gives opium its analgesic properties, and it's definitely the most "famous". Funny thing about pure, extracted morphine in a pill form to be taken orally - it has an atrocious oral bioavailability and only lasts a few hours. And yet, that same morphine, when it's left with all the myriad other alkaloids in opium poppies, will produce an absolutely cracking high that lasts for 12 - 24 hours (depending on how you define its start and end). It's such a layered, nuanced high as well. It remains my all time favourite in the opiate or opioid category. Many years ago I had a good flower season. By then I had enough knowledge of the plant to be able to take care of it during its growth (and it turns out that most of the time it just wants you to leave it alone), and then then I'd enjoy its 'thank you' in the form of little balls of raw latex. I didn't do a single thing to that latex to refine it or change it. I just collected it, set it aside, and then ate some now and then.

Those were some of the best times in my life. I remember the amazement at the length of onset. I had previously only had some experience with codeine and oxy (both of which I'd start to feel within 15 to 20 minutes of swallowing, and which would hit peak at about an hour and a bit). This opium, though... by 30 minutes it was already far stronger than anything else I'd taken (sedative analgesic-wise). By an hour I was shocked that it was still ramping up! The active come up was about two hours, and after that I settled into this incredible peak which seemed to last 4 to 5 hours before any signs of the slightest drop in strength.

Anyway, back to current day reality. Walking through the city streets in Melbourne and this kid in his late-teens, wearing a full fur suit (but carrying the head, not wearing it) says to me as I pass "Did you know that friendship is magic?!", and I just laughed and walked on. With a twinkle in my eye and just a hint of sadness, I said softly, to myself, 'no, my friend, opium is magic'.

I normally just surf logged out, but I dug out my password to reply because this subject of opium gum availability in the US has always interested me.

I lived in Minneapolis-St. Paul for about 4 years. There is a large Hmong Vietnamese refugee population, as well as a decent number of Laotian and Cambodian immigrants. About 5 months after I moved there, there was a decent sized opium bust at Minneapolis-St. Paul international airport, and it definitely wasn’t a personal stash sized amount. It was carried by a woman who originated on a flight from Laos via Tokyo. I found it interesting that it was powdered and originally thought when the story broke that it might’ve been misidentified heroin, but they never updated it to clarify. Seeing as most southeast asian heroin is a whitish powder, I’m guessing it was really opium. Besides, if it was heroin, I know the CBP and DEA would be all over claiming that bust and wanting to make sure everybody knew lol.

In any case, it makes you wonder how much foreign opium is making its way into the country. I personally haven’t seen any that wasn’t harvested by a home grower.

Hallelujah.

Never let myself get hooked and I'd grow just a few poppies a year, but that pod high was a big old style Cadillac that ran anything else off the road and cruised into tomorrow.

There were many theories as to that long high, from secondary alkaloids to the tea/tar/straight pod powder forming some kind of time release matrix to where it absorbed slowly. IMO, that latter might seem more likely.

Probably wouldn't be as great as having weed around. I wish there were opium dispensaries as well, however.

Seems like it would be quite a delicacy or expensive option.

The ' opium dens ' seemed like a nice bar-b-qued pit stop back in the times. Lol. Let the opium flow again please. 🙏

Ditto on a lot of this…ran across opium once and they only let me hit it once. And yes duped by the opium incense hustle, bastard phish junkies. Fast forward to the pods. Came from uk. Ironically. And growing them…seed when cold late winter early spring and leave them alone but to thin them. They need space. With good seeds yield larger pods. There’s so many varieties…some are better for precursors to produce synthetics (thebaine) and some yield more actives. Of course they have stress response that helps the yield

Did y’all ever adjust pH making tea? I used coffe grinder and an expresso maker…..bliss
