Am I the only person out there that is sick of hearing that stupid question every time you buy something.

Once upon a time it was a random thing here and there, but now it seems like everytime im standing infront of a checkout operator they are hitting me up about the damn flybuys

Fuck the damn the flybuys :p

I love my flybuys.

Sorry, it's people like me who perpetuate the "do you have flybuys?" question, because I'm totally addicted to it. But I know it annoyed me back when I didn't have a card, just like "would you like fries with that?" and "did you want to take advantage of our two chocolate bars for $2 deal?" at the servo. :D

Look, they take forever to accumulate and you get virtually nothing for it, but if you're shopping anyway at Coles/ Target/ Officeworks whatever, like my husband and I do regularly - why not get something for it?

Just before our honeymoon last year we had accumulated 12,000 points which I cashed in for $100 credit on my credit card. Other times, we've gotten concert tickets, wine, and a cordless phone for home.

It's addictive... I even look out for those special deals (ie. buy 10kg of cat food for an extra 1000 points, or 2 x Riva Coffee for 500 points). Why not; as long as you need and eventually will use the stuff you're buying. We like discount coupons and stuff too, and read all our junk mail :D :D

aaaah, thats another thing that shits me into a blubbering mess! I have at times decided not to buy something because i didn't want to listen to the fuckhead at the counter make it look like I was making the worst investment decision in my life by not taking up the offer to get another *insert crap product here* for extra $1.50!

Once I even had this picky little fucker argue the point with me. He just kept on with, 'its only an extra 55 cents and you can get another chocolate bar, thats the best deal ever'

Blockbuster is another one, I know for an extra $2 I can get another 2 dvds, but I only have 3 spare hours and 4 overnight dvds are going to run out over 6 - 7 hours! do the maths blockbuster fuckwit! :p
 
I've just applied for a flybuys card and i have a virgin velocity points card too. I figure that, even though it's not a huge amount, i may as well get a little something extra?

^ I agree with both of you, having the card, using it and getting something back - especially if your just buying what you would have bought normally - is a good thing.

I just cant stand the question every single time

Perhaps I have a sub-concious guilt about NOT having a card... maybe I should go and apply for one then when i go grocery shopping or get fuel I can wak up and say 'ive GOT flybuys thank you very much'
 
I have fly buys, im up to 12,000 points so i think im gonna cash it in soon.
My Mum and Dad used their fly buys to buy me a toast cafe grill, and a rice cooker!

Really? Do you mean velocity points? As far as i can see (and i'm more than probably wrong) i can only earn points by flying, renting a car, booking accommodation or getting an NAB credit card?

Can you tell me of more benefits? I have a velocity card and am keen to rack up points :)

No seriously, once you get the card it becomes a joy to hear those words. Because you *do* forget!
And it's such a satisfying thing to whip it out and go "yep, here ya go".

Now I just have to contend with MY guilt at Priceline ("Do you have a Priceline card?") and Katies ("Do you have a Katies' membership card?") NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
 
The only discount cards i use with any regularity are my Tree of Life card, Loot card and Rabbit photo card... now i've got my velocity card because we're travelling more now... hopefully the flybuys will redeem itself. :)

I worked at big w (which thats correct does not do flybys) and so i served this women she bought like $500 worth of stuff and she come storming back into the shop yelling "excuse me but u did not ask me if i had flybys i just spent all this money and now i cant get points because you were too lazy to ask"
Full yelling and carrying on so i turned and said "We dont do flybys here only colesmyer stores do i think u ment to go to target we have an ezy rewards bank instead if you go to the service desk they will tell you all about it" hahaha should of seen the look on her face stupid biatch!!! she was very embarressed and she deserved every second of it.
 
At one stage last year I got really sick of getting asked for flybuys so I decided to join up. I lasted about 6 months and even got into the habit of swiping my card for other peoples shopping. Whenever the check out chick asked someone in front of me for flybuys and they said no, I would ask if they minded if I took them. No one ever said no....

Anyway, then I got the shits! I found out that all flybuys is, is a huge market research company that sells your data to firms that want to send you heaps more junk mail. By seeing exactly what you buy at the supermarket or bottle'o they can then target you with heaps of junk mail. Great if you're into it but I prefer not to receive personally addressed mail for things I never asked for or telemarketing calls during dinner.

So I quit.

I've been thinking about the velocity card though.... I fly HEAPS to NZ. I brought 4 tickets yesterday and each one gets you about 3000 points. I think you need about 60,000 for a tasman flight. Thats still 20 trips but I guess if the points don't expire then it is a pretty good deal. Anyone ever claimed on velocity?
 
I have them but i'm not fussed on going out of my way to go shopping at places that have them. I don't even know how many points i have and i've had my card for years. How do i go about finding out if my points are actually worth anything? I think i changed my address (although i've been in my current place for 3.5 years) and have gotten no mail or anything from them. Do they expire each year or cross over?
 
doofqueen - go here https://www.flybuys.com.au/flybuys/content and then pop in your card number & password (if you remember your password! If not I'm sure there's a method of contacting them listed on the site).

You ought to be getting regular email updates, or at least notices in the post about your fly buys points, which come with catalogues of things you can spend them on. The site has all the goodies on there too.

chopped _ chimp: that's really interesting, if true, it could be why I get a bunch of junk and lots of phone calls. :)

But I really think if you have your name & address ANYWHERE these days that's likely to happen, if you've ever bought anything over the internet, bought a raffle ticket, filled in a survey, entered a competition... you're vulnerable no matter what you do, unless you want to hide under a rock you're bound to get marketed at. I try to cultivate a sense of Zen about it all. Oh, and there's that 'No Call' register nowdays... what a blessing.
 
Thanks SLM! I havn't gotten any emails or mail and I never really bothered to look into it. I don't think i would remember a password i had years ago as i like to regulary change mine. Cheers!

SLM...chopped_chimp speaks the truth, thats the key reason for my disliking the whole flybuys thing in the first place. Whenever something comes off looking like you get something for essentially nothing you can generally be sure that you are paying with your own personal information.

Interest free deals at furniture shops is another good example
 
damn it... its says they cant find my account or some shit and i have to call them. What a pain in the arse.
 
I dont have one but my sister does. A couple of years ago she says to me "I got you a fly buys card" I thought .. oh thats nice.. then it turns out it was an extra card on her account. So if I buy something she gets the points !! Needless to say it ended up in the bin... You don't get anything for free in this world .. even from family.

Ive got a velocity card. Ive got bugger all points on it. Seems like you would have to spend a small fortune on it to get anything of value from it. I wish I never got the Virgin card. Its a cheap interest rate but the insurance premium seems to make it more expensive month by month. Then again I probably shouldn't have maxed it out.

Man, I'm fucked then. Every major purchase I've made has been on some sort of interest free deal. :D TV, Computer, lounge suite, washing machine, dining room table, Playstation 2, car tyres.

I fucking love that shit, I just make sure I calculate it and direct debit exactly the right amount each week/month to have it all paid off before the interest kicks in.
