Do pharmaceutical companies knowingly benefit from drug abuse markets?

^that's what i've always seen, so thought it was strange when the guy mentioned needing an Rx- that is so beyond overboard! This country is loosing it!

Yep. I live in Oregon, and I actually had sudafed prescribed to me last year. They couldn't just tell me to go in the store and buy it. I don't believe I can buy the good claritin allergy medicine either. Here is what Erowid says about it:

In August, 2005, Oregon governor Kulongoski signed a new law intended to reduce methamphetamine production in home 'labs' by moving ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine into Oregon Schedule III and making simple possession of more than 300 tablets of pseudoephedrine a crime. See Oregon House Bill 2485.

Also from the Claritin-D (pseudoephdrine sulfate) website:

Unlike some allergy medicines that changed their
formula, we kept our original, proven formula
and instead moved behind the counter. Ask your
pharmacist now about Claritin-D. There is still
no prescription needed.*

*Except in Oregon.

Thanks for sharing that WM, that's blows my mind. I knew you guys had a pretty serious use and mfg problem out West, but hadn't heard they had turned to such drastic measures! Wow, what's next???

i'm 100% sure the pharm company's knowingly benefit from the black market/drug abusers. they know exactly how addicting/fun/euphoric/etc drugs like hydromorophone, oxycodone, hydrocodone, fentanyl, etc are and they know a decent percentage will end up being used by people illegally because ever since opium has been used people have abused it and its always been in high demand and people have been making lots of profit off of it (and drug abusers as well) since the it was first sold.

SWIM can comment on anabolic steroids and believe you me, pharmaceuticals KNOW where them drugs go.

Excample, Androgenic Anabolic Steroids have only two legit uses now days, 1) treatment of hypogonadism (the inability to produce testosterone) 2) treatment of muscle waisting conditions (AIDS mostly but a few more)

and one non legit use : muscle building for performance or looks

zambon produces the injectable drug winstrol depot (Stanozolol suspention basicaly) at 50mg per vial, they produce a few hundrent thousant a week.

now stanozolol at that dose has not been prescribed for something like 20 years, there are much better drugs (testosterone esters for hypogonadism, and nandrolone esters for muscle waisting conditions, even if it was good for any of these the dose is too high and the need for DAILY injections make it very impractical for a normal patient).

But of cource among bodybuilders winstrol depot is exceptionaly popular as diet drug, even more so among track athlete because it does not retain water.

BTW Zambon is CONSTANTLY sold out on winstrol depot...

Want to hear something even better? An PR excecutive of a greek pharmaceutical company gave a speach on identifying counterfeight drugs of that company. Coincidentaly the drug was nondrolone decanoate (a very very famous bbing drug) and he gave the speach at the same confirance center, at the same date of a bodybuilding competition.

Obviously the pharm companies sell the drugs to legit wholesalers, but it just so happens that drugs just seem to break up during transport ALL the time.

bugger, one would thing that they would just make the vials stronger, wouldnt they?:P

IMO definitely yes, Oxy, dilaudid, fentanyl and hydrocodone are all drugs that the manufacturers love making money off of because they know its so abusable.

QFT ... although they would deny it. Think Big Tobacco :\

they can put all the anti abuse prevention things they want in pills, it might stop people from being able to get an instant rush off it from banging or railing it... but you sure as fuck could still get high buy eating a bunch more tahn your scripted.... would just take longer to hit

exactly, they are drug dealers, many good people get addicted from a back injury, and who cares if they make oxycodone time release, or so u can snort u can eat the right amount and get just as high and get addicted

Methadone, buprenorphine, disulfram (antabuse), chlormethiazole (Heminevrin)...

and they're not even ones that are illicitly diverted, but are specifically for treating assorted drug dependancies. Of course they benefit

There's a big difference between physical dependence and addiction. Addiction in pain patients who don't abuse their meds by dose escalating or snorting, or anything deviating from the instructions, is very uncommon.

just saw the movie requiem 4 a dream.....the doctor who perscribes the adderall and valium, thats a prime example of pharm companies making money off borderline perscriptions. like look at the doctor, he trying to get in as many perscriptions out in a day and probly not selling enough drugs that the pharm companies are pumping out.

i've been working in the pharmaceutical industry for four years. They obviously have no objections to making money off of people abusing their drugs because it is out of their hands. And yes, they do have a lot of safer alternatives that are not physically addictive, and effective pain medications that aren't opiate based, HOWEVER i think that this thread has started to become a rant on the evil conspiracies of big pharma, and I think that we might be forgetting that there are many people in the industry who truly care about the health of their customers and put a lot of time and effort into helping people deal with their illnesses. Oxycontin is a miracle drug for those who need it, its also a major threat to somebody who abuses it. We are beginning to see anxiety medications, and sexual stimulants more heavily advertised then any other drugs on the market because they sell, and when it comes down to it....It's an industry. They got the job to make money and support themselves, and if thats whats gonna put food on the table, then thats whats going on the shelf, but don't neglect the people who spend night and day trying to make a difference in people's lives by giving them comfort through medications. Just because some of us may abuse these pills, or fall victim to their beauty doesn't mean that they don't help others get through unbearable ailments. Just my two cents.

Big Pharma was created and syndicated but not for the benefit of man. Just another exercise to make money.

A great many Pharm companies are controlled by the Rothchilds etc (althought this is cleverly hidden behind Swiss Accounts and holding companies) much like the Federal Reserve .. I could go on.

The Science and Politics of Cancer A discourse by G. Edward Griffin.

Video quality isn't great, but it's the audio that's most important. I have an open mind and found this very thought provoking!

Thankyou for that link, is a very interesting topic.

Please don't drag up threads from the dead like this; if you have something you want to say to a poster, like thanking them for a link, then PM them or something. You shouldn't have to resurrect threads unless there is something that would genuinely add to the discussion.

Profit is profit for them. All you have to do is look at some of their "products" past and present to see it: Fentanyl lollipops, cough syrups that can have flavors like "vanilla", "blueberry", and "grape" added by pharmacies for a small fee, injectable methamphetamine (1960s) marketed to people with everything from obesity to depression, potent synthetic opiates that provide unbelievable amounts of euphoria when the "high" could easily be eliminated...and so on...

Even in the face of incredible scientific evidence and intense pressure from the government, the pharma guys put up a fight to the finish to take something off the market or make it less available. Take Benzedrine inhalers and injectable Methedrine in the '60s: more people were using amphetamines than any drug in the history of the world up to that time and the govt. was on their ass, still they fought it with everything they had, conducting "research" and such until virtually forced to remove the products from the market.

Seriously, how many different-yet-similar opiate preparations do we really need? Should children ages 6+ be given amphetamines when it's been linked to addiction to other drugs in adulthood in some studies? Why not add something to pills that would make them harder to crush and/or some type of Antabuse-like thing to counter the euphoric effects?

Because money, that's why.

I don't think Big Pharma benefits from the black market at all. Most all of the pills that are on the street have been diverted from legal prescription sources, so the only people benefiting from this is the dealers. Also, the fact that these pills are desirable on the black market is an indicator that they are abusable, meaning they would not be prescribed as liberally. The big money is in the drugs that are considered non-addictive, non-habit forming but are taken every day for long periods of time. Prozac, Paxil, birth control, Concerta, that's the kind of drugs where the money is made.
