Do pharmaceutical companies knowingly benefit from drug abuse markets?

Most of the new opiate drugs coming out, at least time release ones, have serious antiabuse shit in them. Take a look at the new Opana ERs; damn near impossible to shoot. I've read about other pills in the pipeline with naloxone matricies that make it impossible to even crush the pill without releasing enough to cause withdrawal. If companies want to make money off the black market, their current R&D pipelines certainly don't show it.

I think the biggest profit off the illegal drug market is definetely Sudafed + other pure pseudoephedrine products. Just look at previous years stats when Sudafed had little resctrictions, the numbers mind boggling... surely there isn't that many people with blocked noses.

90% of this shit would go to making methamphetamine.

yea and who actually uses coricidin cough and cold?

I think they're aware of it, and whatever bad press they get from addicts abusing their products is financially worth it since their profits are still through the roof.

Like someone already mentioned, pharmaceutical companies exist to make money. If they weren't making money, they wouldn't continue manufacturing these products. Since they do continue, they're making a profit.

I don't think they care if people end up getting hooked on their drugs; in fact, it seems that if they did, more effort/time would be put into making non-abusable drugs.

If there had not been an oxycontin fiasco and the proliferation of shady pain management clinics all you bluelighters would be bitching about how dry things are.

they can put all the anti abuse prevention things they want in pills, it might stop people from being able to get an instant rush off it from banging or railing it... but you sure as fuck could still get high buy eating a bunch more tahn your scripted.... would just take longer to hit

Wtf is this thread a joke? (excuse me for that if it was rude).

Nar- if you don't have anything constructive to add, please don't bother with the sarcastic comments. This person obviously wants to discuss this topic in more detail than the subject implies. If you have something to say, I'm sure you can figure out a way to say it that doesn't attack other users.

just think about sudafed

I'm actually quite pissed that you have to get a prescription for fucking sudafed in my state. Seriously, the replacement crap doesn't clear my sinuses at all, and 2-3 times a year, I really need some good decongestants without having to pay out the ass to see a doctor for them. I'm so glad I'll have health coverage in 6 months!

Then again, I could always go across the river and buy some sudafed over the counter....8)

Even not abuseive drugs. Ever seen drug commercials for those wierd syndrome like wrestless leg and that asma srpray?? just listen to the freaken side-effects. You must be retarded to want that shit. Just like zololoft...ect. Put out a drug , make major cash, public/science realize the drugs (-) effects outweigh the (+) effect, drug is cancelled. New drug comes out, repeat!:)

talk about bio-economy

Of course they do! The pharm companies don't really care what is happening to their pills after they make them. If there's a demand and a market for the pills they're going to keep making them regardless of how many of them aren't being used illegitimately. They just pretend to care to make themselves look good. I mean look at purdue pharma for example. They were just sued millions of dollars for "misleading" people saying that oxycontin wasn't as addicting as it is.

dude yes, i went to a doctor and payed 75 for the visit and 75 for scripts of 120 norcos 60 xanax and 90 soma, so the companys make money off crooked sales of their shit

Curious as to your opinions. We all know gun manufacturers know that a large percentage of their handguns are used on the black market. Obviously purdue pharma has benefitted enormously from high "market demand" for its product oxycontin (much of which was probably generated by purdue themselves with false adertising as being less addictive). We know companies are looking to get their drugs prescribed as easily as possible while placating the dea at the same time. Do these companies make drugs knowing that the more people who abuse them, the more profits they will make??

I might argue the opposite. How many sales has Purdue Pharma lost because doctors were reluctant to prescribe OxyContin, because pharmacies were unwilling to stock it, etc?

Are you kidding? Is this a US state that requires an Rx? I've seen and heard about the states where you have to have ID, and fill out the paperwork, but hadn't heard of anywhere requiring the Rx! Wow! If ya can, tell us where this is please.

^ I live in the U.S. and I haven't heard of anyone requiring a prescription for psuedoephedrine or even ephedrine for that matter, they just limit how much you can buy and keep it behind the counter.
