The evening began in a civilised fashion in an upmarket pub on the outskirts of London. The young couple enjoyed a couple of drinks then both took a new pill that they'd heard about and which had become much sought-after.
The drug, called 2CB, would heighten their senses, increase their energy levels and give them a warm feeling of well-being and goodwill towards everyone around them. That's what they had been told, anyway.
Instead, both were seized by a violent rage and tried to overturn the heavy wooden table they were seated at. They were thrown out of the pub, and the man ran into the street in a demented state, believing his face was on fire. His heart was pounding at such a furious rate he thought he was going to have a heart attack.
Shulgin, who has somehow made it to the age of 87, is 'credited' with rediscovering ecstasy (MDMA) — which had been largely forgotten since its creation in 1912 by a chemist trying to find a cure for abnormal bleeding.
PiHKAL describes in detail Shulgin's experiments in developing and enthusiastically testing more than 230 psychoactive compounds, including MDMA, in the Sixties and Seventies.
