Discussion: The Death Penalty & Capital Punishment

FoXi- I really admire u for what u said in that post and I'm glad I got to hear your point of view.
Because I'd like to think that even if my Mother was murdered, I still wouldn't believe that the death sentence was necessary for the murderer.

In fact, I think I'd be more satisfied knowing that they were still alive and therefore able to suffer. Life couldn't be easy for someone who has committed murder.

Besides that, I just don't want to live in a country where the government has the right to take life. I'd like to think that eventually I will live in a society where our authorities act with compassion and understanding and not out of fear and anger.

FoXi- I also respect what you have said, and I respect your opinion as well...as I do with everybody else, I respect all of your opinions. I only said what I did because I felt that there wasnt a representation of the other side of this argument, that of a victim of murder of a loved one.

Now we have two victims and two differing opinions, but that doesn't make either of us right or wrong, they are simply opinions.

"...but to say that we don't have the right to an opinion on this subject because we haven't directly been touched by it, is in this case at least, flawed. When you're talking about the rules that govern our society, of course we have the right to an opinion. After all, aren't we all part of that society?"

I didn't say that you're not entitled to an opinion, I just said that until you've seen both sides, you can't make a true assesment of what you might prefer. But if you have seen both sides to an arguement you could better consider the choices.

But still, that's not to say I won't listen to what you have to say, I make one-sided decisions every day. It's just that this subject is a highly charged one where the extremes of human nature are discussed and voted for and against on. These sorts of subjects like God, Death Penalty, Rehahbilitation vs Prison, Nature vs Nurture...you know stuff like that must be looked into fully and from both sides to make a proper conclusion.....

...in my opinion.

Cheers.

BTW- I like your icon FoXi, he he Alucard.

thanks waz, I was sure there was an earlier thread on this, I'm going to merge the two to keep all the views together.

i dont believe in capital punishment, im personally see it as an easy way out for the commiter of the crime. but then again i cant stand to see people get out of prison after such a short time as samadhi talked about for such heanous crimes.
it is not right....
i know people who have been raped none of them killed but they were close friends.
in one case when my closest (girl) friend was 12 her house in the USA (she moved here after the incedent) was broken into and her mother and father were murdered and she was raped and left locked in a cupboard for two days before anyone even knew that it had happened.
the guy got 12 years.
now she is fucked up from the experience. she has tried to kill herself 5 times, i have taken her to the hospital twice with slit wrists. im not going to let her die so young. she is seventeen and has soo much to live for. things can only go up now.
but i know this sounds like a thoughtless statement./ believe me its not. i have been thinking about this since i met her.
if i ever saw the man that put her through so much pain and suffering i would kill him myself, fuck the legal system it hasn't worked. he should have been locked in a dark cold room for the rest of his natural life. there have been meth cooks who have gone away for longer.
i dont believe in the death penalty, its and easy way out but when something touches me so close and in such a way i would kill the man with no regrets.
DfI:)

No.

I'm totally against the death sentence.

I think every human has the right to live and no human has the right to kill another human, in any form. The death sentence is so... Inhumane. Knowing the time and day of your death. I don't know how anyone could want to be involved in this for employment.

I hate it.

shals :D

one of the best books i have ever read is guilty by reason of insanity by dorothy otnow lewis.

she is a psychiatrist who spent many years dealing with and interviewing violent criminals on death row and what she writes is absolutely fascinating. i thoroughly reccomend it to everyone who is in anyway interested in this kind of thing

buy it from amazon???
