Discussion - Creditability - is it ours or the universe's to take?

no sir god does work in mysterious ways, and i have and always will believe, there are higher powers that be. One day u all shall see.

Of course he does as I believe in God n class myself as a christian. I don't argue with others who slag God off because that's THEIR belief n they have the right to their belief as I have mine.

I always pray to God every night n he answers my prayers, protects n guides me on the right path. I used to love school assemblies when they'd read bits from the Bible to us n we're sing hymns. Good times.

Also my Nain Peggy was a major Christian n we'd spend hours talking about God n Jesus. And she's have the films on of Jesus (personally I found that rather upsetting, the films). But as a young girl my Nain read the Bible from start to finish.

And my goodness she had some hardship like losing a child, my Taid dying of alzelmers, having angina n was poor most of her life but she never lost her Christian faith. I miss my Nain Peggy a lot but still she's with God now n never feared death.

I said "Nain, how come you're not scared of dying?" She said "I'm going to God n with your Taid." So
Yes, I believe n nice to know that my Nain 's in Heaven surrounded by all her loved ones making huge Christmas dinners n putting on talent concerts as she wants did on Earth.

I've never quite been able to get my head around this. When something bad happens i.e someone you know dies of cancer, its not gods doing, but infact the cancer; yet when anyone accomplishes something, they give god all the praise. Its almost like the abused wife syndrome

Why you'd thank a higher power for your achievements is beyond me.. Its very rare that anyone is gifted with brilliant from the get go, whatever it is has usually taken hours upon hours of practice/revision etc.... god didnt put the hours in, you did....

Absolutely crazy isnt it 8( Sounds very demotivating to me. Wonder as a whole, if religious people genuinely feel happier and more fulfilled than atheists? Obviously this kind of thing is next to impossible to measure, but would be interesting to find out none the less.

I do recall reading something that seemed fairly impartial that religious folk are happier on the whole than atheists. How that was measured, I dont know.

Im more agnostic leaning to the side of atheism I guess and can be quite the miserable, cynical git... I can be very optimistic to though, id say 70/40 favouring the angry cynic..

isn't believing that a big bearded man in the sky loves you and shit at least a bit of a delusion?
how being a christian is fine while saying that you've been abducted by alien is delusional?

Christianity is a religion? There is a bit more to it all than just believing in a big bearded man in the sky. If it makes people happy to believe such things & helps them to be better people... I don't see what's wrong with it.

In what sense is that so very different? They have their prophet (the Prophet of Profit maybe but that's who they choose to follow) and they are true believers. Who are you (or I or anybody else) to say they're delusional whilst Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, whoever isn't? Only difference I can see is that the Co$ was formed recently enough for it to be blindingly obvious it's all a bit flimsy. Same goes for Mormons for that matter but they're pretty well accepted (maybe not so much here admittedly). If you're going to say that one set of beliefs lacking evidence for its veracity and with much evidence to suggest otherwise is admirable purely cos it's been around for ages why not have Odin and Mars and Thoth and Mithras and so on and so forth. It's all mythology created to help people in an age before any real knowledge and understanding of the universe and our place in it was available. Same goes for Scientology only they try to mix it up with sci-fi to make it more whooshy and exciting. It's a double standard. At least be consistent if you're going to go the "well if it makes them happy..." route. The idea that faith in and of itself is intrinsically admirable is beyond moronic though frankly.

ok it's a religion. so what?
just because it's an established delusion (imho of course) it doesn't mean it's any less crazy. (with all the respect due)
