Tryptamines did hippies take shrooms?

You were not around in the 60s or using drugs so your points are moot and invalid. LOL my friends and I were the ones taking Psilocybin mushrooms on the West Coast in the 60s, and we had experienced LSD before so it was not that. Mescaline was freely available as either peyote or from various cacti that contain it. Yes there was some synthetic mescaline around but it came in very large pressed pills and gelcaps.
 
Yeah but Tim Leary and Jonathon Ott were and if Tim Leary couldn't get mushrooms I'm not convinced a 17 year old hippie could.

Tim Leary probably could get mushrooms. LSD was probably just easier and cheaper for him to acquire, since he could order it straight from Sandoz with a legit Harvard letterhead on his order.

Yes, I was raised by hippies and back in the day they used to take shrooms. One of my relatives loved Peyote apparently.

Also, I have heard of MDA and other psychedelics around and this was the 70s. By the way, "hippies" didn't just take psychedelics and weed. Speed and Coke were popular, and dope was starting to get big as well.

Yeah MDA was around as I know people who took it way back when. Your definitely right, "Hippies" were not limited to the mind expanding substances. Speed, coke (stimulants in general) were very big, especially to keep you going during travels. Heroin were also getting big with the "hippie" scene in the late 70's and got pretty bad in the 80's.
 
many were polydrug users.You had to try many before you found what suited you:
lsd -
purple microdot
orange sunshine
orange barrel
various blotters of all sorts
window pane - clear and red
pyramid both purple and green
peyote buttons
chocolate and strawberry flavored mescaline powder

barbituates of all kinds seconal ,nembutol, tuinal (my personal fav)
desbutol pills - speed on one side, sedative on the other half - separate the 2 halves and speed all day take the other half to come down and get some sleep.

Quaaludes ,Mandrax and Sopors

pcp - most often sold as THC or "tic"

all the various pharms you could imagine - it was wide open back then before LEO had a clue

I could go on but I will stop now with my tales of miss spent youth.

Desbutal was a brand name drug by Abbott containing 5 mg Desoxyn (methamphetamine hydrochloride) and 30 mg Nembutal (pentobarbital sodium); an amphetamine combined with a barbiturate in the same capsule.

It came in bottles of 100 and 1000, and is no longer marketed today.

No Leary only ever got mushrooms in Mexico. In America he could only get psilocybin pills made by Sandoz. When they ran out he could only get LSD.

Chocolate mescaline powder? Is that what the dealer told you it was duke? Can you offer any reason why someone would mix mescaline powder with chocolate? I can assure you - when the dealer sold you that he walked away laughing to himself.

i'm aware of the timeline of the drugs he used, but i've never read anything about the motivation behind the changes. sources?

Any book on Tim Leary. Sandoz got reluctant to send psilocybin and LSD to America. Leary sent them a cheque in 1963 to try and buy LSD and they returned the cheque. He got his LSD from a guy called Micheal Hollingshead instead.

Yeah, I have ran into quite a few multi-decade dope addicts at phish and other jamband shows who were "hippies" (whatever that means now).

In fact, now that I think about it, the first time I ever did dope (which I hardly ever do, I can count it on my hands) was with an old head.

I do believe it was the real thing.Mellow colorful and very euphoric.
They mixed the pure with Jello instant pudding mix and placed into capsules, sometimes pinched directly from the baggie.It had to be cut with something for safety reasons- very few precision scales in those days

I was a teenager in the 70's so who really knows

Apparantly the choc mescaline might have been DOM - not mescaline. Why would you bothing mixing 500mg of mescaline with jello? You'd just capsule it wouldn't you. And if it was cactus powder you'd have upwards of 30-50g of it to eat.

It's pretty easy to fool teenagers now duke - when they can read the entire internet - god knows how easy it was to fool them back in the 70s when the only knowledge they had of drugs came from their 16 year old mate with the banana skins.

It was a time of exploring the unknown.
Many experimented, I went into full scale research - used myself as a human guinea pig and absorbed all aspects of the culture at that time.1972 thru 1980 when I married.
I believe I am a fairly well adjusted individual now.
Older ? - certainly
Wiser ? - somewhat
Experienced ? - VERY
helped me be the musician/singer/songwriter/animal and nature lover I am today.

Maybe duke, but we're here now arn't we and we both know how easy urban legends spread about drugs even now. I think we can both agree it's far easier to gain accurate knowledge about drugs than it was in the late 60s.

Did you ever take methadrine? I never did but people I knew did in SF in the mid 60s.

Have you just got back into psychedelics after a layoff then duke? How do they feel now compared to when you were a young man?

Must admit I only got into psychedelics pretty late when I had a bereavement in the family and found psychedelics were the only thing that helped.
