dior's is making headlines. through the only avenue high fashion can, controversy. and it's the same story every year. "14-year-old model walks for well-known designer." though the media is taking a different angle on it -- i suspect due to some smooth PR -- branding it a cinderella story ...
Dior’s New 14-Year-Old Lead Model Was Just Plucked From Poverty -- Yahoo Style
How a 14-year-old Israeli became the new face of Christian Dior -- Washington Post
while i obviously take no issue with images of underage models, the industry "plucking" children from poverty sounds scary. what's more vulnerable than a child in poverty. makes me think of that modeling documentary where eastern european families are sending their 13-year-old daughters off alone to work in foreign countries with the expectation they will earn the family's livelihood. that kinda seems like what happened here. hopefully these chaperons are on it.
she says her single mom can finally quit her job, according to a news article. which means the family will dependent on this little girl being able to earn through her physical appeal. that's a lot of pressure for a kid, especially in an industry so quick and ruthless. maybe family will travel with her now that they have the means. because she just signed a $265K contract. hope mommy's financially literate.
but practical concerns are no fun, and the internet knows it. this is of course a moral issue, involving nipples.
from getty images, featured with the yahoo article. actually pretty bold for american media. i think Washington Post cropped theirs after receiving comments. and the comments -- below both articles -- are class.
