lately ive been using baking soda, but it seems to emit a minor sour odor when i do sweat

are there any natural/household or store-bought products you can recommend?

Tom's of Maine hasn't got alum in it. Alum is used for anti-perspirant effect so you're still gonna sweat normally with other deodorants. TBH I don't see the point in even using deodorant if you have healthy BO and shower often

Try living in a sub-tropical continent. You learn to appreciate deodorant, particularly if you're standing next to someone on public transport with "healthy BO". :\

We've had arguments on this site over bathing oneself before. To me, using deoderant is in the same basket. Unless you don't sweat (which, honestly if you don't - there's something seriously wrong) just fucking use it.

You know what I find funny? How some deodorants now have silver (usually as the chloride) in them now.

I mean seriously? In that form it does nothing except maybe stress out any bacteria, which will only trigger the development of resistance. <rage>

AFAIK "deodorant" doesn't typically have aluminum. "Anti-antiperspirants" have aluminum to stop perspiration. Look in the more natural part of your grocery story, or go to a more natural health store.

I'd personally recommend any one of Queen Helene's deodorants, but especially the Aloe or the Tea Tree Oil deodorants. When I do wear deodorant (which is very infrequently ;)) these do the job. :)

There is no reason to avoid deodorants with aluminium in them. There were some studies in the past that suggested otherwise. These were flawed and countered. Please don't be afraid of every atom on the periodic table; life is too short.

Hehe It gets sub-tropical in Ontario during the summer, I can't even step out of the house in July or August without starting to choke and sweat from unreal humidity. I totally feel you on the horrors of having a smelly public transit experience, but if some guy has his armpit airing in your face anything less than clinical strength deo will tend to mingle with the BO more than mask it and that's just as wretched!

FWIW to qualify as healthy BO it must not be gag-worthy. Only one health nut I've known had legitimately bad BO and she couldn't help it because it was some kind of genetic issue causing it, but everyone else I've smelled with a good diet of real foods I could tolerate entirely without deodorant. After all, sweat is just another waste disposal method of the body. If the stuff going into it is not shit, why should the stuff coming out be? Except for actual shit, but the smell of that is also affected by diet

Long story short, deo is yet another band-aid solution that society hinges upon. It masks a symptom instead of curing the underlying problem, and that's what we're all about. Nobody wants to give up Doritos and cigarettes so fuck it, we'll just pay another $5 for a stick that masks the bad smells and keep on shoveling shit into our mouths. /rant

arm and hammer got a natural deo without aluminum

i like how they say aluminum in australia

i'm not, i use a prescription extra strength anti-persiperant that has aluminum lol
i just dont like the smell it leaves on my armpits and i cant mix another aluminum deodorant with it

thanks everyone i'll check out your suggestions!

Aubreys Mens stock. Basically an etoh based spray with all kinds of pine/plant oil extracts n shit. Smells fucking bomb to me, even after sweating my tits out on a long bike ride. It ain't no antiperspirant, but stopping yourself from sweating never seemed like a good idea to me anyway.

And yeah, idk what anyone says, fuck aluminum. Fuck aluminum pots, fuck aluminum anti-persperants, and fuck the nano particles of aluminum my local power company "seeds" the clouds with to try and weasel a bit more out of mother nature for their hydropower. Like building dams wasn't enough. /end rant

What studies are you talking about?
Those that found that the brains of Altzheimer's patients contained large amounts of aluminum?
If so, you are incorrect - they were never countered satisfactorily, though the studies questioning them did show that they were not the final word.

However, many studies show profound negative effects of having aluminum in one's body.
Recent studies also show without any doubt that dementia is closely linked to aluminum intake.

These factors were also linked to aluminum intake:
Decrease of cognitive ability and neural cell loss in mice
Cognitive decline and increased risk of dementia in humans
Impaired spatial learning after oral aluminum exposure in humans

etc. etc

Aluminum directly contributes to Alzheimer's and breast cancer, among other tasty things. Avoiding a few of the periodic elements (uranium, arsenic, 'cheese product') isn't a bad idea. Life isn't that short.

Normally, only very small amounts of ingested aluminium are absorbed and accumulated. Despite the percutaneous absorption of many drugs and chemicals, the skin has not been considered as a possible site at which aluminium could enter the body. Application of low aqueous concentrations of aluminium chloride (AlCl3, 6H2O) (0.025–0.1 μg/cm2) to healthy shaved Swiss mouse skin for 130 days led to a significant increase in urine, serum and whole brain aluminium, especially in the hippocampus, compared to control animals. This percutaneous uptake and accumulation of aluminium in the brain was greater than that caused by dietary exposure to 2.3 μg per day in feed and water. In vitro studies demonstrated the passage of aluminium through viable mouse skin. This study shows for the first time that aluminium is absorbed through the skin of mice in vivo and this contributes to a greater body burden than does oral uptake.

personally i think my brain can handle a few heavy metal ions, tho =p

I use a deodorant by Nature's Gate. It contains witch hazel that astringes the pores so that you sweat less, and witch hazel also makes the environment less hospitable to bacteria.

Bacteria usually don't become resistant to herbal approaches so if you use something like that it should help.

i would think that if you shower daily then the bacteria wouldn't have time to grow resistance before they're washed away the next day...

I DO NOT USE DEODORANT DAILY! my secret is to use anti bacterial body wash (common brand is DIAL, found at any drugstore) and to clean my armpits with rubbing alcohol. It is natural to sweat, but the part that makes you smell is the bacteria that grows in your sweat over time. If you notice you are starting to sweat too much/smell, and dont have time for a whole shower you can just wet a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol (get highest concentration available) and wipe your armpits and that area. I SWEAR BY THIS. I am a girl, so naturally not as smelly as some men, but I learned this from my father. And he is a ladies' man who never smells. :>
