In the usual devil-may-care attitude that is the Lounge & if this is an appropriate place , T'would be interesting to have a poll to ascertain whether those lovable rogues who inhabit the bluelight lounge have any opinions on the death penalty.
maybe the mods might set up a poll ???????????

For the record I am against the death penalty

The countries that give people the right to bear arms should have the death penalty. By being torn apart with bear arms.

I think it was a typo and meant you had the right to bare arms. Awfully handy in summer. :)

shit i should have put an undecided on this poll
if you want to, you can can delete this thread, start a new one and i will make a new poll

I support the death penalty only under the following circumstances: when a man kills another man who is attempting to resuce a dog who was wounded by another man when the dog attacked the man for attemping to kill a woman.

Against in all cases. At the risk of being America-centric, it violates the Constitution (as even lethal injection is inhumane and painful) and clogs court dockets.

Don't make me bust out the letters I used to write on behalf of condemned prisoners when I was not sober. :D

Myths & Facts on capital punishment, from Amnesty International

Abolitionist & Retentionist Countries

Lysis, you know about Old Sparky. Although he'll never be fired up again, the autopsy photos are pretty damn gruesome from the times he misfired, especially the 350 lb guy that didn't die right away. :(

I'd consider Rush Limbaugh and George W. Bush (his brother too) prime candidates to try it out if it's ever around again, though. We can even get Dubya on federal charges for treason. =D

im for it myself. theres some people that due to genetics, upbringing or fate just cant be here. i mean sure, we could lock them up until they die, but thats alot of food that we as taxpayers have to foot the bill on. and in the end, the only thing you can really learn from them is that they cant exist in our society, or that theyre so fucked up, no one can understand their reasoning.
everything dies, sometimes its better for everyone if theyre dead sooner.

^ I agree.

Although in third world countries capital punishment is more often than not unjust and unfair.

So by that logic it's okay to kill people as long as they killed someone else first. So people can learn from that right?

If I just got convicted of murder. I would beg for the death penalty. I can't imagine my whole life behind bars. I would take every chance to kill myself. And that's called punishment.

dunno. Many innocent people are killed in war accidently. Like in the Middle East- yet that seems quite justified.

So why not kill a mass murderer ?

On the flip side though, a psychopath who would kill for pleasure would do so even with the penalty being death.

We dont have it in Aus. But we do have kangaroos who aim themselves at our cars at night.

FACT :

In the US, if you are poor, non-white, are a drug addict, then you are many times more likely to end up on death row in america's Gulag system.

When was the last time some organised crime boss, with plenty of money, excellent lawyers but guilty of multiple murders was sentenced to death ????????

If you are facing criminal charges in the US of A & if u aint got the doh-ray-me folks,
you can expect a very second rate legal experience :(

i strongly agree with what atri said but, L raises a good point. these days i lean more towards "against". how many people deserve the punishment that gets handed down to them? how many people are in jail for a crime they did not commit? and of those people, how many could afford a decent lawyer?

i started a new job last week as a court reporter. i was stunned at the volume of people that didn't even know the name of their public defender, or couldn't explain to the judge why that same attorney was not present in the court (one had taken a vacation and neglected to appoint another attorney for that court date). I observed nothing that would lead me to believe that any of this wasn't the fault of those "defenders". i just feel that there is too much room for human error to believe that everyone that gets handed down a death sentence, deserves it.
