DEA Promises to Continue Drug War and Ignore Voter Decisions in Colorado & Washington

Voters in Colorado and Washington have decided to legalize cannabis for recreational use, however the feds have promised to ignore states rights and lock people up anyway, regardless of local laws.

Bob Tuskin reported on the story for The Intel Hub this morning, saying that:

“Both Colorado and Washington have passed referendums legalizing cannabis use. The plant is still made illegal according to federal law.

Colorado’s Proposition 64 makes it legal for anyone over the age of 21 to possess marijuana and for businesses to sell it. It will be interesting to see how the feds treat this.

Barry Soetoro claimed he would not go after legal medical facilities and respect state laws. Fail!”

The local politicians, even those who opposed the initiative, actually seem to be respecting the will of the voters, but they have also expressed that the feds will not be so understanding.

Last night Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, an opponent of Amendment 64 told reporters that:

“The voters have spoken and we have to respect their will. This will be a complicated process, but we intend to follow through.

That said, federal law still says marijuana is an illegal drug so don’t break out the Cheetos or gold fish too quickly.”

Unfortunately, he is right, the feds do intend to carry on the drug war within the borders of states that have legalized cannabis.

This will without a doubt lead to a period of legal conflict within these states and more innocent nonviolent drug users will continue to be put behind bars.

However, the good news to this is that a crackdown of this nature will make the drug war look even worse than it already does and prove that the federal government is going against the wishes of the popular vote.

Up until the past few years, the establishment has actually had public opinion on their side in regards to the drug war, but as more people are learning the truth about prohibition that advantage has begun to slip away.

For the feds to blatantly ignore the wishes of the voters will further undermine the drug war and undermine the electoral process itself.

With that being said, smoking cannabis openly and proudly in these states will be an act of civil disobedience that many are currently planning.

You can’t arrest everyone and, when a law becomes truly unenforceable, is when it will actually be rendered obsolete.

It’s important to remember that just because the law has been written down onto paper though, doesn’t mean that the battle is over.

I think this is a misleading article. The Feds have yet to issue an opinion on the new state laws.

I remain optimistic.

In fairness, the DEA is just doing its job. We should be blaming Congress and the President for not amending Federal laws to respect State's rights.

^ i completely agree it still makes no sense to me that a state can pass a law that so blatantly violates federal law... whether i agree or disagree with the issue at hand

I've lived on the east coast all my life. Everything that happens out west is kind of surreal. I mean when people start to talk about legalization over here i find it hard to believe pot will be grow free and it will be all good. We're too close to DC. Local law enforcement definitely have bigger problems. Hell the feds do too but nah, I'm not doing the happy dance yet. They do need to get the guns and crack off the streets cause in case the federales' havent noticed.... shits fucked up lol

The DEA has refused to re-schedule Cannabis. Federal law still supercedes State law, just ask Dixie.

Would that mean that you would have to be caught by a DEA officer to be arrested.. or will the police still be acting under federal law?

DEA. Caught is kind of a broad term though. Fed cases def. Use local law enforcement for larger cases i would assume. I think it boils down to where resources are allocated. Local law enforcement doesn't arrest for something the DA isn't goin to prosecute. Once possession charges aren't on the books they don't have local penal codes they are sworn to issue citations for.
In California they seize and investigate grows and are sometimes required to give people their plants back even though they are federally prohibited.

^ the federal gov has other sneaky ways of applying pressure to states to conform to thier laws...
for instance the feds can grant or take away funding as a motivational tool...

^ this is how it will be done. A few raids on dispensaries for show, but the real action will be withholding of federal aid, etc. Which the states are hungry for. So, we'll see how this goes. Gotta reach a critical mass. I for one am very impressed. I grew up in that neck of the woods but the fuckers ran me out years ago and I'm now 1000's of miles away. Medical marijuana was but a pipe dream when I was active back there, and really surprised us when it went through. Now, tiny towns have dispensaries, complete with the neon sign pot leaf, so you can get the medicine you need for your headache, or hangnail or whatever. Ahhh I miss the west sometimes. . . .props fellas. Keep it up! Just awesome that you don't need some medical pretext to enjoy this plant.. . I think " I wanna enjoy this plant" is more than sufficient, and the voters in WA and CO agree hear heartily! Now c'mon kerlikowskI, shape up!

respect from across the pond!

keep up the good fight, stateside brothers and sisters! a new world is possible!

Will state police have the power to arrest people in possession of small amounts of Cannabis on Federal grounds OR will all arrests have to be done by DEA agents from here on out?

This is the perfect time for President Obama to step up to what he inferred 4 years ago. Keep the feds out of the state decisions. Most of us are jaded with this stuff. We may have had hope 4 years ago but that quickly subsided when things happen that take more freedoms away. But I have no choice but to have a little hope again. Barack Obama, who smoked herb as a youth, not worrying about getting re elected and making good on some things. Maybe? I guess we'll see.

I find it hard to believe that anyone finds it ok to bust people with a plant, even Feds. I know it's been said jobs will be lost, and really what easier thing to do then to bust a mellow citizen with a plant just because you can. There has to be another meaningful area of safety for the public to take it's place.

I do know in the whole picture humanity moves towards feedom. From slaves to woman voting, it was long and painful with two steps forward and one step back. It seemes like some things will never come to pass. But they will, and I think a lot of us want to see it in our lifetime. Even when the Constitution was written, the US had many problems that are better today. It was the Vision that counted, and still does. So I have to believe in time, that with every dumb new law that takes away freedom, two more come in to give it back. Again, I have no choice at this point than to have a little hope. Who would have thought that these legalization laws would even be entertained?

And yes, I am tired of hiding behind medical reasons. While marijuana is the best antinauseant as well as a safe remedy for many other ailments, I just like the loosening of the ego and euphoriant effects that include mental insight. Insight and euphoria should not be forbiden.
