The deadly rise of 'hippy crack': For celebrities, it's the party drug du jour. Now inhaling laughing gas - is spreading to middle-class living rooms

Cheap, seemingly harmless and guaranteeing a night of raucous laughter, so-called 'hippy crack' is increasingly popular with celebrities and their well-heeled young fans alike. Even Prince Harry was seen indulging two years ago.

There is just one problem: nitrous oxide is no more legal than it is innocuous. Despite being touted openly at music festivals and in bars and nightclubs across the country, sale of the gas for recreational use is very much against the law.

As for being innocuous, that is only true if one ignores the alarming side-effects it can cause: strokes, hallucinations, seizures, blackouts, incontinence, stress on the heart, chronic depression and even — in cases of prolonged use — depleted bone marrow. Few would tack the word 'harmless' on to such a list.

At the vulnerable age of 5, the evil dentist drugged me with this horrifically toxic substance, I'm now am an incontinent depressed epileptic with severe angina, memory loss, and daily hallucinations. There has never been a drug more toxic :O

Yeah, I don't understand the Daily Fail either...Nitrous is loads of fun. I recall the last time I went to get a tooth filled. I asked for nitrous then had him turn it all the way up.

My cousin passed away on Easter Sunday after using this 'safe' drug. She was 20 years old, was in collage studying media make up and had her whole life ahead of her, or so we thought. She left behind a devastated mum and dad, as well as her 3 brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins. She was found on a park bench, alone. As she was sitting up, passers by thought nothing of it, until the next day. Nitrous Oxcide can kill. There are no safe drugs.

I'm sure these stories are invented by astroturfers.

Hahaha 'Hippy-Crack' wtf even is that? Why not just call it nitrous, or even a name that exists.

I've read that supplying the N2O without some concentration of O2 is dangerous. I don't remember how but I remember that many of these side-effects could be eliminated by adding O2 to the mix. That's what dentists do.

Classic Daily Mail .

About 30 years ago this Newspaper was one of the biggest selling in the U.K it probably still is . The reason back then was that it had the best Horse Racing coverage !!
The reason now is unfathomable . Daily Mail readers are a great threat to the Nation & are not to be underestimated . They generally believe that they are well informed:| , rounded and educated folk .
Whenever i see one in a waiting room or on a Train i can't help but look !! I want to ask them " Do you really believe that Bullshit " but that would only re enforce their judgements .

Is their a equivalent daily Paper in the States or Canada ?

^Fox News sounds about like the DM over there. But, as for newspapers, no one reads them anymore, so I can't make a direct comparison.

The problems they are speaking of come DIRECTLY from people not breathing oxygen with their nitrous. Nitrous sort of confuses the brain into thinking that the nitrous you are breathing is oxygen so your body never really sends that signal 'breathe mofo! You are about to pass out!" Which is why there are sometimes groups of kids found dead smiling from ear to ear in cars with the windows rolled up.
Hyperventilating your nitrous is also fucking stupid. I always make sure I am breathing A LOT while I am doing nitrous.

what are astroturfers?

"Astroturfing" means to fake "grass roots" support. Atroturf being the trade name of synthetic grass sometimes used on sports fields. WIth regards to the Internet, it's when someone high-up impersinates all the little people down below, by making anonymous forum posts, to give the impression that what they stand for is more popular than it really is.

When there is a drugs-related article I sometimes see some posts by someone claiming to know several friends or family members who all had their lives, and everyone else around them, wrecked by drugs. Usually there is someone about the story that doesn't seem too likely.

A classic form of astroturfing is when the author of an article fakes anonymous reader comments to support his own positiion.

That grumpy old woman's cousin sounds like she died from butane or computer duster. Many mistakenly think it's N2O. Assuming that it's not astroturf.

Don't know about Scotland but in the USA some do call it hippy crack due to it's psychedelic but compulsive and short lived effects.

I think with pure nitrous from a tank is used it's mixed with at least 20%, usually 50-70%. When the doc/dentist turns it off they give the patient pure oxygen. This is because with the prolong periods of use in anesthesia the nitrous can build up in the blood, body and cavities in the body. It then can come out of the lungs, displacing oxygen just long enough to kill you.

Kids listen to Ew420, he/she speaks the truth! After all he/she is a doctor;).

Only noobs do that, I hold that shit in. Not too long, but as long as I can comfortably hold my breath with my lungs empty. And I take a breather in between hits.

The notion that you can OD on nitrous is laughable, considering that many others and I have filled our lungs up with supposedly pure N2O. The only deaths come from people who are stupid or suicidal inhaling pure N2O from a tank with no oxygen, filling a car or inclosed space with N2O, putting a bag over their head with N2O, or using impure nitrous from either car tank or poorly home made shit. However it should be used in moderation. The B12 depletion is pretty much unavoidable with prolonged use, and it's bad when it happens. Oral/sublingual b12 won't work, for it requires a factor in the gut to get absorbed. IM or IN B12 might work but if you're currently using N2O it might oxidize the new B12. Sometimes B12 shots are given by some doctors for it's supposed health benefits in healthy people, wouldn't be too weird to get one. Methionine or maybe even SAMe might help too.

And besides astroturfing posts, I believe this so-called "journalist" is a hack. One who does low-quality stories, often hit pieces for hire. The style of journalism in this story is known as yellow journalism, low-quality sensationalist stories.

20+ years ago I got my own nitrous tank, it was just over 5ft in height & I had to buy a regulator in order to use the tank. First thing I did was get a 20ft long piece of hose and my whipped cream maker. I unscrewed the individual cartridge holder and screwed the hose onto the threaded end, after hooking the other end of the hose to the regulator I was ready to party.
Each day when I got home I would get busy with the nitrous. Generally I would pass out and wake up several hours later. I used the entire cylinder of gas & I got a refill. I credit the spring loaded whip cream tank trigger (dead man's switch) for my continued existance today, as I would have suffocated without that spring-loaded switch.

US has The Weekly World News

when i was hit by a car i got given gas and air (nos with oxygen in it so you can breathe as much as you want)

i'd fucking love to take a huge cannister of that shit to a rave or a party. that ambulance journey was awesome, i wasn't in pain i was just high as fuuuuck.

The issue with Nitrous Oxide is that if you're a retard, recreational use of it can actually be extremely dangerous.

Nitrous Oxide itself may non-toxic and 99.9% safe, but what many people seem to forget is: No oxygen = death
Nitrous Oxide =/= Oxygen

Therefore inhaling large amounts of Nitrous Oxide and not breathing = no oxygen

Is this stuff really fucking that complicated, a fucking child could understand this

Off topic: W00t going to the dentist in a few weeks, I'll take my chances at strokes, hallucinations, seizures, blackouts, incontinence, stress on the heart, chronic depression

It doesn't take a retard to die from Nitrous.
In high school, my sister's four friends did lots of Nitrous in a car with closed windows for hours.
They were too young to consider the risks, and all died.
My friend did Nitrous while driving on the freeway. He lived, but it is easy to imagine that he could have died.
None of them were retarded.
They were simply young. And under-educated. Which is true for millions of other people as well.

Also,
Heavy and frequent nitrous use can deplete vitamin B12 in the body and lead to serious and unpleasant neurological problems.

There is a BLer whose name I momentarily forgot with some amazing stories to tell about his multi-decade addiction to simultaneously experiencing Nitrous and Acid (which he called gascid).
Now he is severely and permanently affected by the nitrous use.
(Edit: found his story here. He has wanted to commit suicide for that past 14 years due to his intense suffering and pain.)

Now, if drug education were not propaganda, we could teach people about these types of things so that they could use drugs like Nitrous safely. It is, I would agree, one of the safer drugs out there.
