For me it's more that Stokes Croft is one of the few alternative, independent areas left and building a Tesco there is another step towards completely homogenised cities with no unique or interesting areas. It doesn't fit in there, it's not in keeping with the area at all![]()
Tesco have signed a lease to take the commercial unit of old Jesters at 140 Cheltenham Road in Stokes Croft, Bristol. It is a deal that the bank did after putting Jesters Comedy Club Limited into administration in May 2008.
Stokes Croft is renound for its' unique character, creativity and self definition. Tesco - the UK's biggest supermarket - is the antithesis of what Stokes Croft is about. The community have made it clear that they are not welcome here: 2500 people have sent postcards to the council demanding consultation regarding the store. 96% of the 500 local residents surveyed said they did not want another supermarket in the area. AND there are already 5 within a mile - we certainly don't need another!
On Thursday the police brought a small army to Stokes Croft and provoked a riot. The extent of brutality inflicted upon the residents of Stokes Croft has now been well documented across the internet. Let us show them that what they did was unacceptable.
Let's protest against the police brutality inflicted upon our community. Let's protest against Tesco and a failed system that favours corporation over community. And let's respond to police violence with non-violence, and celebrate our home with a peaceful protest party! Bring friends, bring music and bring your voice!
Spread the word!
And fuck the idiots in this thread who are too thick to see what's happening.
To be honest I quite enjoy it when the squatters types get a beating from the rozzers, I don't think the police were heavy handed at all, these people caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to private property and the police have exactly that duty, protect private property and if a couple of hippie skulls get cracked in the process, whatever.
do we really want our butcher, grengrocer, OTC med supplier, fashion vndor, newsagent etc under the same veil
but it is a blight upon the beautiful area of Stokes Croft with it's unique independent and community atmosphere
Ummm....aye?
I think most people do want to be able to go to one place and get everything they need instead of trekking all around town just to get some food, paracetamol, a paper and a few cans of beer.
Where I used to live in Edinburgh we had butchers, bakers, fruit & veg shop, spice shop, fishmongers, newsagents, off license all right next to each other so that was fine because it was easy enough to go from place to place and probably just as quick as going to Tescos anyway but most people don't have that luxury so of course they want one place that sells it all.
If it was the choice between going to Tescos to get all my stuff or spending hours going all over town to shop at independents I'd choose Tesco everytime. Plus they stay open later than indie butchers, bakers, fishmongers, fruit & veg shop etc.
In my part of Wales there is only Tesco. In an affluent middle-class town, Carmarthen, the prices are lower than in the desperately poor Ammanford, just 15 miles away. Prices in Ammanford were kept artificially low until all rival independent traders went out of business. Now the prices in Ammanford are possibly higher than almost any other Tesco in the UK.
Fuck Tesco.

Avon and Somerset police maintain that the operation was justified and said its officers had found petrol bombs on the roof of the building which had been taken away for tests.
