Crusties v Cops

For me it's more that Stokes Croft is one of the few alternative, independent areas left and building a Tesco there is another step towards completely homogenised cities with no unique or interesting areas. It doesn't fit in there, it's not in keeping with the area at all :(

Nail = head!

My thoughts too, and mostly the whole reason there has been a lenghty protest

Tesco have signed a lease to take the commercial unit of old Jesters at 140 Cheltenham Road in Stokes Croft, Bristol. It is a deal that the bank did after putting Jesters Comedy Club Limited into administration in May 2008.

Stokes Croft is renound for its' unique character, creativity and self definition. Tesco - the UK's biggest supermarket - is the antithesis of what Stokes Croft is about. The community have made it clear that they are not welcome here: 2500 people have sent postcards to the council demanding consultation regarding the store. 96% of the 500 local residents surveyed said they did not want another supermarket in the area. AND there are already 5 within a mile - we certainly don't need another!

There's another protest this week...

On Thursday the police brought a small army to Stokes Croft and provoked a riot. The extent of brutality inflicted upon the residents of Stokes Croft has now been well documented across the internet. Let us show them that what they did was unacceptable.

Let's protest against the police brutality inflicted upon our community. Let's protest against Tesco and a failed system that favours corporation over community. And let's respond to police violence with non-violence, and celebrate our home with a peaceful protest party! Bring friends, bring music and bring your voice!

Spread the word!

Fair play to everyone in Stokes Croft who stood up for what they believe in!! It was a brave thing to do. <3

Tescos are rip off scum~bags, they drop their prices to get people through their doors & before you notice it the prices have more then doubled again. They don't give a dam about small businesses.

Are there many squats in England these days? I remember when squatting was huge in London in the 80's & early 90's. I was in some amazing squats over there, i always regret that i never moved over to London at the time. Some of the squats were so well run, some of the most amazing people lived in them, such a brilliant set up!! I have always admired the way the English people get things done & done well!!

Squatting was never tolerated in Ireland, this is such a bloody nanny state over here, when i was younger it was always my dream to move to London & get in with the whole squatting community, but i had my son when i was very young so i never went over, to this day its my biggest regret! :\

I hope the people who lived in that squat in Stokes Croft have somewhere to go now, the squatters must be a nice bunch of people because the locals seemed to stand up for them. Squatting makes sense, why pay fat cat landlords huge rents & why give thieving bankers thousands of pounds interest when there are so many empty buildings rotting away?

It sounds like the people of Stokes Croft had done everything that they could to get rid of tescos out of their town, good on them for standing up for what they believe in!!!!

In my part of Wales there is only Tesco. In an affluent middle-class town, Carmarthen, the prices are lower than in the desperately poor Ammanford, just 15 miles away. Prices in Ammanford were kept artificially low until all rival independent traders went out of business. Now the prices in Ammanford are possibly higher than almost any other Tesco in the UK.

Fuck Tesco.

And fuck the idiots in this thread who are too thick to see what's happening.

What is happening SHM - capitalism ?

Tesco are pretty shite, as a consumer I reckon there products are overpriced & of as low a quality as people will stand for, I won't shop there except on the ocassions when prudence demands I do. They've opened another within a mile of the one they already have & plan to build another right next to Morrisons which is about 600 yards from the store they already have.
Seeing as everything is supposed to be about choice I'd have thought the monopolies & mergers commission would have to get interested in this, or maybe they don't exist anymore.
Given the situation a self imposed ban on buying from tesco seems reasonable & Mistress Prudence can go fuck herself.
Asda however sells Lindemanns Kriek <3 & therefore is the rolls royce of evil faceless supermarketry

The greek/turkish supermarkets in North London absolutely shit all over tesco. Onions the size of your face for about 1/3 of the price of a single loose onion the size of a tennis ball in tesco. The quality of the produce is much higher and a lot cheaper, same with the meat. They actually smell like nice fresh food rather than dirty dusty air conditioning.

There doesn't seem to be anything like the greek or turkish supermarkets near where I live in Manchester which is a real shame.

Well played for a big fuck off to tesco, it's shame that some private property unrelated to tesco/the police seemed to get damaged by some idiots though.

To be honest I quite enjoy it when the squatters types get a beating from the rozzers, I don't think the police were heavy handed at all, these people caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to private property and the police have exactly that duty, protect private property and if a couple of hippie skulls get cracked in the process, whatever.

=D

do we really want our butcher, grengrocer, OTC med supplier, fashion vndor, newsagent etc under the same veil

Ummm....aye?

I think most people do want to be able to go to one place and get everything they need instead of trekking all around town just to get some food, paracetamol, a paper and a few cans of beer.

Where I used to live in Edinburgh we had butchers, bakers, fruit & veg shop, spice shop, fishmongers, newsagents, off license all right next to each other so that was fine because it was easy enough to go from place to place and probably just as quick as going to Tescos anyway but most people don't have that luxury so of course they want one place that sells it all.

If it was the choice between going to Tescos to get all my stuff or spending hours going all over town to shop at independents I'd choose Tesco everytime. Plus they stay open later than indie butchers, bakers, fishmongers, fruit & veg shop etc.

but it is a blight upon the beautiful area of Stokes Croft with it's unique independent and community atmosphere

Tescos built a shop on a tropical paradise-like Island in Thailand so I guess anything is game, especially run down squatted areas full of grafitti and crusties in Bristol.

IN Bath Tesco have been buying up land Knowing that planing permission will be denied at the first attempt.
They still buy the land though n then presure the local authority 2 open a shop cos in their eyes it's netter than havin scrub land./
I'd rathr have the scrub landany day they are truely the most crafty horrible retailer.
So far they have managed 2 get a copuple of the xpress stores unfortunatley .
Being a middle class city folk aren't that keen on Tesco , . different to whats happening in Bristol but still the general consensus is Fuk Tesco n thats comong from the middle class

No they don't not round here , the independents stay open later the closest Tesco 2 me shuts at 8 . pm
One of the reasons 4 that is stop little fukwits hangin around te car park annoying Folk.

Never heard of any Tescos closing at 8pm. Even the Tesco Metros that I've lived near have always stayed open later than that. Never seen a butcher or fishmonger open till anywhere near 8pm either. There were dozens of them near my last flat and they'd all close about 6pm.

Nah but at least in the 24hr Tescos you can go in anytime and find some in the fridge / freezer. Doubt theres many 24hr indie fishmongers on the go.

But if the people of Ammanford had of said fuck Tesco and avoided it when it 1st opened there, none of the independant traders would have gone out of business surely.

I've got no love for Tesco or any other supermarket chain but people are talking in this thread as if they turn up in the dead of night, drag you from your bed and make you shop there at gunpoint.

There's only so many Tescos in your part of Wales and everywhere else in the UK because every fucker shops there, of course they're gonna keep opening more & more if they're given the business to enable them to do it.

Really curious, what is exactly happening?

People keep shopping there then they are going to keep opening stores. Im not going to complain because I always shop there, they are open 24 hours a day and I go for booze at night and cigs and rizzla in the early hours. They are a huge company taking over most of the shops but thats because they are so successfull, because people continue to shop there. Id love to have the time to visit a fucking hundred different shops in 1 day to get all my stuff, but I simply dont. I go maybe to get some meat dfrom the butchers once a week because its nice, but thats about it.

Also what the fuck is with these comments "violence started because of a police presence", never heard of such an idiotic excuse in all my life. Also so did they find petrol bombs or not? These are the "peacefull" kind of people the police have to deal with..

Whenever I hear the chant "whose streets, our streets", usually violence and disorder come along too, anyone see a theme?

they didn't find petrol bombs, was a bullshit reason made so polis could enter.

Avon and Somerset police maintain that the operation was justified and said its officers had found petrol bombs on the roof of the building which had been taken away for tests.

they must have some kind of petrol or piss differentiator, as I said in the other thread they were bottles of piss.

enjoy eating their shit matt, you seem like a willing recipient.

I've got a couple of small "corner shops" in my town that open at 5am, when I'm usually awake and need backy, rizlas, fliters, milk etc. and there's nowhere else open at that time.

You plan yer day - You go when shops are open, think ahead.
That's how it was done "way back when" and should still be done today.

These days people are too dependent on convenience and could learn a lesson from gettin back to their older roots.

Massive monopoly chain-stores akin to Tesco (Asda, Morrison's, even the Co-Op are gettin in there... just when I thought they had a shread of credibility) will, no matter what you think, destroy local businesses.
Then you've got more people dependent on benefits and everything else that people in this thread have complained about in the past, at present and likely in the future (more so if things keep going the way they are..).

Yes - Kicking the shit out of a Landrover and fucking up other people's property isn't going to get anyone anywhere... But sometimes people are just sick of the situation and the only way they feel they can be heard is via creating a ruckus :\
Possibly sad, but definitely true.

p.s. Anyone getting a beating from cops sucks, regardless of their view of life. And if you enjoy it there's something a little bit wrong about that ;)
