critique the song above

7/10 ... really like the beat but the rap wasn't strong enough, specifically the first rapper. The rapper with the deeper voice (who actually sounds a lot like the guy in Gorillaz (sorry for my hiphop ignorance) and potentially is that same guy) was really spot on though. That I really dug. Overall though, very groovy song.

Air - Sexy Boy

9/10, my favorite Air song ever made (or, one of them at the very least). I really really love the "singing" during the "verses", so floaty and airy. Always puts me in a good mood

Beirut-Nantes

I must admit, everything from Gulag Orchestrar impressed me much more than anything from this recent effort. Being said...
7.5/10

Nina Simone - The Family

^ fuck! I'm not even reviewing yours because of your snide comments on AIM. :p

8/10 I really enjoy this song. The vocals remind me of Andrew Bird. I love the accordion (right?). I love the tempo. I love the French. I also enjoyed all the layering. I don't know why I don't listen to Beirut! Thanks so much cb2. What album should I pick up of theirs? It's totally right down my alley. Wow, so I just looked them up and I should be surprised to see Jeremy Barnes assisted the first album release.

edit: OK I felt guilty. :) I love Nina Simone but this isn't my favorite of hers. I feel like it's not enough for Nina. Needs more soul. Nevertheless I love her so I'll give it 6/10.

I'd definitely start with Gulag Orkestar. I think it really encapsulates what Beirut is all about. Also, you should grab the 5 song Lon Gisland EP while you're at it, a great little collection of delightful tuneage.

It always amazes me to think that a 20 year old kid from new Mexico makes this music. Simply fantastical

^ i do believe that song is supposed to convey passion and feeling. I certainly feel it.

5/10 i didn't get anything out of this. Its not artistic and really, its not even high energy.

Ah Yes...
I'm already very familiar with this song. Probably has one of the most kick-ass basslines of all time.
It's very much a product of its time. Textbook 70's prog rock. Excellent musicianship, unconventional songwriting with the kitchen sink thrown in for good measure. It's not a Yes song unless there is at least 900 different riffs.
I used to be huge into prog. My tastes have simplified since. Just give me a groove and a good chorus. But it's fun to occasionally listen to some totally over-the-top musical wankery. I certainly couldn't make music like this.
I don't dig myself but I got mad respect for it.

7/10 not really my thing, but I can imagine that its good for those in the know. Love the film clip though, no seriously, its awesome! Almost distracted me from actually listening to the song.

Birds of Tokyo - Silohettic

I give it an 8.5/10
I don't listen to much rap or hip hop. That said, I thought this was a great song. I don't know how much the drugs I'm high on affected my rating. The lyrics were excellent and moving, and the topic was an important one. It was nice to hear a positive message for a change, instead of the usual mindless violence and nauseating extreme materialism I've come to expect from mainstream hip-hop and rap.
