Creatine: The Overlooked Ally for Psychonauts and Dissonauts

Most people think of creatine as a gym supplement — a tool for bulking muscle and boosting power output. But beneath the surface, creatine plays a far more fundamental role: it’s a universal cellular energy buffer, especially vital in brain metabolism. For those who explore altered states of consciousness — whether through classic psychedelics like psilocybin or LSD, or dissociatives like ketamine and DXM — creatine may be an unsung ally worth your attention.

🔋 Energy for Consciousness

At its core, creatine supports the rapid regeneration of ATP, the molecule your brain uses to fuel every thought, perception, and emotion. When you're tripping — particularly during intense peaks or deep ego dissolution — your neural circuits are firing fast, hard, and sometimes chaotically. The demand for energy spikes, especially in regions involved in sensory processing, emotional regulation, and cognitive integration.

This is where creatine shines: it helps stabilize neuronal energy levels, potentially allowing your brain to process the experience more smoothly without crashing into mental exhaustion or cognitive fragmentation.

🌈 Benefits During Classic Psychedelic Trips

For those who journey with psilocybin, LSD, DMT, or ayahuasca, creatine may offer:

  • Greater mental stamina and clarity through intense or prolonged trips
  • Reduced risk of “overwhelm” or cognitive shutdown, especially in high-dose scenarios
  • Enhanced post-trip integration, thanks to sustained energy for reflection and memory encoding
  • A subtle anchor to bodily awareness, which may support grounding in challenging phases

It doesn’t blunt the visuals or mute the mysticism — instead, it acts like a neural safety net, letting you dive deep while maintaining just enough coherence to observe and retain insights.

🧊 Benefits During Dissociative Trips

Dissociatives like ketamine, nitrous oxide, DXM, or PCP push the brain into entirely different modes — often characterized by fragmented consciousness, loss of body identity, and disconnection from coherent narrative self-awareness. These states can be illuminating but also disorienting, especially when energy systems are strained.

Creatine may help by:

  • Reducing cognitive fragmentation in high-dose or extended sessions
  • Supporting faster return to baseline coherence after a dissociative episode
  • Minimizing “brain fog” or fatigue in the hours and days after the trip
  • Offering a more stable substrate for integration, especially in therapeutic or introspective use of dissociatives (like ketamine-assisted therapy)

🧠 No Magic, Just Solid Neurosupport

Creatine won’t induce visions or spiritual breakthroughs — it’s not a trip amplifier. But in the same way you’d prepare your set and setting, preparing your brain’s energy systems can profoundly affect how deep, safe, and meaningful your journey becomes.

It’s also:

  • Extremely well-studied
  • Cheap and widely available
  • Safe at 3–5 grams per day for healthy adults
  • Naturally present in the body, especially the brain and muscles

✨ Bottom Line

Whether you're a psychonaut chasing transcendence, or a dissonaut exploring the void, creatine may offer subtle but powerful support: more resilience during the storm, and a clearer mind when you return.

Not all allies speak loudly. Some just quietly keep the lights on while you explore the stars.

Please spare us from this AI slop @Asante
I'm not saying it doesn't have it's own validity, but we all know exactly where to go if we want to read LLM generated text, and it's not what this forum's about.
That being said, I like creatine and have been taking it with good results (and I learned a lot about it from ChatGPT when I was researching it).
But I'd love to hear about *your* own personal experience with creatine!

I've gotten into Creatine after years long illness, to regain my physical strength, which sank very low. My agenda, initially, was purely physical, you know what it does. However, I started to notice my already brisk mental resilience increased, and I noticed that with the dissociative trips I take, I have more fortitude. I began to look into it and saw reports of enhanced memory, nootropic effects for some a mild mental stimulation, and it makes utter sense given how it regenerates your ATP and neurons being high;y energy consuming when they do their thing - and they're working overtime in trip situations.

Creatine isnt just helping me with my isometric weight training, but it spiked up my brain especially under duress - such as tripping :)

My dissociative of choice is Memantine, which is very longacting. Creatine makes thoughts clearer, the experience less fatigued, and recovery is smoother.

I'll have to try it with a psychedelic, and I could see it being more helpful there, given how dissociation is more a slowing and psychedelics are more speeding.
