The "Plateau" they refer to is also known as the peak
Not to be nitpicky but since the whole thread was about peaking...
But IMO, the plateau is not actually the peak. The plateau is generally known as the long period immediately passing the peak where the effects are at a standstill, no longer increasing but not decreasing, but the actual
peak is that moment, substantially shorter than the plateau, where you're at
THE seminal moment of the trip where everything is balls to the walls and quite strong.
I sense this difference most noticeably during bad/overwhelming trips, where the peak is quite uncomfortable, the 30 minutes or so where I tell myself "DAMMIT I WISH I HADN'T DONE THIS." Usually, by the time the plateau hits, I've got considerably more control over myself, and am enjoying the coasting effects quite a bit. Then, after a few hours, the effects start to gradually taper off.
How the effects of a drug manifest themselves over time though is by very nature subjective and I suspect that what part of the experience counts as the peak vs. the plateau varies from person to person, so don't put too much stock into that.
