ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- A man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of teaching two teens how to Dumpster dive and retrieve methadone, and one of the boys died after consuming the drug.

Richard L. Newkirk, 32, of Ormond Beach, was arrested on charges of delivering a controlled substance to a person less than 18 years old. Newkirk could face manslaughter charges in the death of 14-year-old Bryce Parson.

According to Ormond Beach police, Newkirk drove Parson and a 17-year-old boy to Whitney Labs at 1095 N. U.S. 1 early on May 24 and taught them how to retrieve discarded methadone bottles from the Dumpster.

The boys went into the Dumpster and retrieved two large bags full of plastic methadone bottles, and the trio returned to Parson's home, where Newkirk extracted small amounts of the drug from each bottle and shared it with the boys, police said.

The boys later became sick and passed out, Ormond Beach police said. Parson never awoke and was discovered dead the next morning, according to police.

Another victim of the illegalization of drugs. If these people were able to go and purchase their drug of choice at a store instead of retrieving discarded bottles with unknown ammounts of the drug in them then this would not have happened.

Its ashame some people have to go as far as diving into dumpster to get high. Our rules & laws are brought on by egotistical bastards that think they know whats best for the rest of us.

If it makes you feel good, lets make it illegal.

Unless you're educated on how Methadone works & its effects, you will overdose w/o question thinking its not working after the first dose & you keep dosing until your dead.

Um... they do have pill ID sites all over the web.

As well, considering they only used methadone, I'm pretty sure they knew what it was and just didn't understand that it's not a pleasant high because to get to the point where you're actually getting high off it, you're also sick as hell.

So I have to disagree with you. They're victims of general idiocy. If they know enough to go dumpster diving for drugs (I had NO idea pharmacies discarded their pharms into dumpsters, either... how did I NOT know that????).

Point being, if you're high school age, there's always someone who has a supply of pharms. Or you can just be a big boy and go to the city and get some dope.

They just didn't know what hey were doing. That was the problem. It had nothing to do with legal/illegal. And I regret a lot of things I have done in the past. I would never recommend anyone go and get high. And I regret some of the comments I've made on this site over the years because I really don't want to help people get high. I don't advocate anyone do anything. I just tell t like it is and either preach about spirituality or how to do things the right way if they're going to be doing them wrong.

On the other hand, what, you think schools should teach kids how to "responsibly" abuse drugs? That's what sites like BL are for. There is NO excuse for any kid in America with access to the internet to not know how to use drugs as safely as one can and know the effects and what not.

^It was a syrup, not pills... There was no reasonable way to know how much they were getting out.

It's sad the kid is dead but this shit gave me quite a laugh. Pretty fucking clever idea really. I know what I'm doing tomorrow...kidding...kindof...

Really though, shouldn't the clinic be more responsible with the disposal of the bottles? Even though there's only a tiny bit left in each bottle it could really add up depending on the number of bottles.

^...Also given that methadone is extremely potent and the syrups they use are extremely concentrated. I'd say that death is actually pretty likely for a novice opioid user trying to get the residue out of these bottles...

man, how is this even possible? At all 5 of my former methadone clinics they force you after you dose to fill the bottle or cup with water and gulp it down. If you try to leave without doing this the nurse jumps over the counter and dropkicks you. There's no residue left in those bottles.

Yes, they do have pill ID sites all over the internet, and they are wonderful, however when people are collecting syrup bottles of methadone and washing them out and drinking the water/unknown ammount of methadone syrup solution in the bottle then those pill ID sites don't really ammount up to a holy hill of horseshit.

I do agree with you on the last part of your post however, with all the information out there on the internet about drugs and with harm reduction message boards like this one hopefully a lot less people will be getting into situations like the people in this article.

Different clinics have different policies - I'm guessing - on methadone disposal policies and procedures. For example, my clinic doesn't require that you rinse after you drink your dose. In fact, they don't even require that you drink all of it. One day I came in pretty stoned and didn't want to drink my entire dose out of fear I'd OD. I told the pharmacist the situation and he told me that no one is forced to drink their entire dose. So I drank roughly half of it and threw the bottle in the garbage and that was that. Yes obviously he could have taken it and emptied the rest of the contents but considering that I've seen several half empty bottles in the garbage on several occasions, I doubt they bother. And yes what I saw could have been just juice. I can't say for sure.

you have not LIVED until you've been dropkicked by a methadone nurse

my clinic washes out every bottle before they toss it, i see them do it on the occasions that i will be next in line when they have to change a bottle. ive heard of ppl doing this with like hydrocodone syrup and getting enough to get high, small tolerance id imagine. sad story tho, 14 is pretty young to be out dumpster diving with 32 year old addicts.

Ah, I just saw bottles, I wasn't really paying too much attention to the details.

Either way, I still stand by my argument that the legal system had anything to do with the deaths.

If the bottles were marked with the concentrations, they should have been paying attention. If they were not marked with the concentrations, they were completely stupid for taking unknown amount of drugs.

That's like going around to a part of town known for heroin and finding a few bags of dope on the ground and just banging all of them because you know if it was scramble, you could do 5 bags. Was it 5% scramble or 90% SA powder?

I feel bad for them. Nobody should die from a drug overdose.

But they really did bring it upon themselves.

I don't understand what legality had to do.

Either way, the one kid was a minor. So even if the "draconian" drug laws were abolished, there would still be regulations.... and I would assume that being that you can not legally smoke cigarettes until the age of 18 or drink alcohol until the age of 21 that the same would apply to methadone (which is different because you CAN get a subscription for it under the age of 18 it if you ARE indeed an opiate addict anyhow).

If there were not age limits applied to drugs of any kind, I don't care. If I had kids, despite my past, if they want to live in my house, they aren't opiates.

When I was 18, I was hanging out with 40 year olds drinking & smoking the ganja but there is no way I would ever go dumpster diving no matter how old the other person is.

Off topic but, I knew a few grimey people back in the day that would go dumpster diving at pharmacies and look for empty Oxy 80 bottles and such because they would put fake Oxys they made out of melatonin tablets in the bottles and sell them to unsuspecting people. Really grimey and bad for the karma, but they made a killing doing it. People didn't look twice at the fake 'Oxys' when they came out of a legit Oxy bottle.
