ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- A man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of teaching two teens how to Dumpster dive and retrieve methadone, and one of the boys died after consuming the drug.
Richard L. Newkirk, 32, of Ormond Beach, was arrested on charges of delivering a controlled substance to a person less than 18 years old. Newkirk could face manslaughter charges in the death of 14-year-old Bryce Parson.
According to Ormond Beach police, Newkirk drove Parson and a 17-year-old boy to Whitney Labs at 1095 N. U.S. 1 early on May 24 and taught them how to retrieve discarded methadone bottles from the Dumpster.
The boys went into the Dumpster and retrieved two large bags full of plastic methadone bottles, and the trio returned to Parson's home, where Newkirk extracted small amounts of the drug from each bottle and shared it with the boys, police said.
The boys later became sick and passed out, Ormond Beach police said. Parson never awoke and was discovered dead the next morning, according to police.
