Oh my opinion is not tolerated, hm? Well I am sorry to tell you that you either endure having to skip my posts in fear of learning something new or look for an anti-psychiatry forum because bluelight is in no way against psychiatry - well, or you could just keep insulting me, maybe that will teach me!
Keep self-medicating and keep blaming neuroleptics for your psychiatric problems. Surely that will go very well, as has been shown in thousands of randomized double blind placebo control studies!
Practically all recreational drugs are "inherently toxic". Dosis facit venenum, pretty sure I have said that before.
While antipsychotics contribute to the decrease in brain volume that can be observed in schizophrenic patients, they are still a necessity in those who suffer full-blown mania or schizophrenic episodes. Untreated bipolar I disorder and schizophrenia have a very poor prognosis if left untreated.
EDIT: I don't take neuroleptics for "maintenance" of a steady affective state, I take olanzapine as needed which is during manic episodes. It isn't unlikely that I would be dead by now if I did not.
If you are not "pro psychiatry" does that mean you do not believe in the existence of psychiatric illness or that you don't believe it can be treated pharmacologically? Ketamine is ineffective against depression as well then, correct?
EDIT 2: Well there is at least one study that found a greater decrease in brain volume in untreated patients than in those treated with antipsychotics, but most other and more recent studies disagree. This one has found short-term treatment of 12 weeks to cause no reduction in grey matter, brain volume or volume distribution between different brain regions. This one shows how strong the correlation between total dosage and brain volume reduction is. Dosis facit venenum, I think I've mentioned it.
Either way, it is not really an option to leave a person with severe schizophrenia untreated. Name one person you've known who handled his life well despite suffering from a serious case of untreated schizophrenia. How would that be possible in our society?
The same goes for mania. I don't think you appreciate what an extremely destructive state that is. People have contracted multiple STDs within a couple of days, gotten themselves into legal trouble, physical confrontations, cheated on their spouses, started companies which instantly go to shit, quit their jobs or borrowed large sums of money just to burn through it in no time. Mania and schizophrenic episodes can ruin a life and antipsychotics do a very good job at treating them.
But hey, you seem to know better. I wasn't aware you had psychic powers. In that case I should probably listen. Do you always go around making promises that you can not keep? How has that been working for you?
Just name an alternative treatment that has been proven to work.

You don't seem understand that I do not have alternative treatment options for my manic episodes and have seen what it can do to my life. It took me 3 years to get back on track after my last psychotic episode. If you have seen mania, you would agree that living with a manic person is not something you want your wife or daughter to go through. It seems you have not or you would understand that perfectly well.Stop spewing your unsubstantiated opions on this thread and find a pro psychiatry and pro pharma site like CrazyBoards. You will have better luck there. I think most of us would agree that your perspective is not appreciated here.
