No idea why I use Quora or signed up for emails in the first place but I recieved one in particular that I found so interesting I just simply couldn't ignore.
So some user named Timothy Fox asked: "Why do psychiatrists tend to discount the overwhelming evidence that antidepressants are harmful to their patients over time?"
The response from a Psychiatrist, Alan Koenigsberg, was: "Because I am simply not aware of what you are referring to as “overwhelming evidence that antidepressants are harmful to their patients over time.”
"In fact, my reading of the medical literature is exactly the opposite. The medical literature indicates that the overwhelming evidence is that there are not long term negative or harmful effects, and in fact, the medications actually influence neurotransmitters that help heal the brain."
"The evidence is unequivocal that stopping the medications in patients with chronic depression actually causes shrinkage of the hippocampus to the point where later treatment is not effective."
"So my reading of the literature, as well as my clinical experience, as well as that of my colleagues, is the opposite of what you purport."
So to begin, this of course is specifically referring to antidepressants as opposed to antipsychotics, however both still have a very high probability of causing devastating long-term or even permanent damage. What I do know is that for one, I'm not even slightly suprised or shocked to hear such a response from a psychiatrist, it's quite typical from my experience as quite literally every psychiatrist I've spoken to prior tried to support the same type of claim, strongly suggesting it's has greatly benefitted ALL of their clients, with ABSOLUTELY no consequences whatsoever.
The most recent one I spoke to even went as far as to boldly claim that every single side effect I was currently experiencing and have developed since has absolutely no correlation to the fact that I took Invega whatsoever. He then had the audacity to say that instead, every single supposed side effect I believed to be caused by Invega was in reality, a result of me suddenly experiencing psychosis, regardless of how much I attempted to explain that I've never experienced it prior, nor has it ever occurred within family or relatives even once. Throughout my life, I've only been diagnosed with two "mental illnesses, those being autism and general anxiety. And I know for an absolute fact that neither, not even psychosis, is even SLIGHTLY capable of causing such severe, such harmful, such unbearable side effects, not even close.
If what my last psychiatrist so confidently claimed was true, then by that logic, I would've already been suffering from anhedonia, akathisia, a poor metabolism, to be fair I have hypothyroidism but was still capable of loosing weight relatively easily, sexual issues, not even sure how that would work prior to puberty but I won't even ask, cognitive issues, despite having quicker, sharper, and more complex thinking abilites beforehand, and much more. On an unrelated side note, I feel the complete opposite towards my primary care doctor as she acknowledges all of my side effects were directly from Invega.
And finally, after everything I've personally come to learn, have experienced, and have seen from other's experiences, that I completely understand people's frustrations, including mine, from the consequences of taking certain meds, and the psychiatrists that perscribe them in the first place, seemingly unaware and oblivious as to how much harm they're really capable of doing, despite the overwhelming and clear amount of evidence supporting the exact opposite of what they believe. Now I completely understand why there's such thing as anti-psychiatry movements as well, I don't blame others at this point at all, it's completely understandable and justifiable in my opinion.
( I will say though, despite the fact that the grand majority of people do experience negative side effects from such medications, like myself, there are still a few that actually do benefit from them, and even require them to stabilize themselves and function properly, good for them I guess. )
Sorry for the very long response lol, I had no intentions at all to do this but when I noticed this in one if my e-mails it really pissed me off.
