Codiene may becoming Script only ?

Do they think people will just stop taking codeine altogether by making it script only ?

I can just see people doctor shopping or just getting stronger painkillers from the doctors , why waste your time while at the doctors and lets be honest if you live in a large town / city there are so many doctors you could go to if you were organized that the change would have no impact on your supply . This will just force alot of people into that medical coditon requirement loop who would otherwise not get on the bandwagon , I can see why the doctors are liking this change , monthly visits to get a 40 pack of p15's for migraines ???

The other option black market open up but more so for the stronger painkillers as people want value for money and obviously price will be pushed up with demand. People will also smoke more pot as a result as the codeine was used to replace pot with alot of people I know.

I'am Lucky as I live in a big city so this change will not really impact me but I feel sorry for people in smaller town etc as this will really narrow alot of peoples options and could really push them into other harder drug options that would have far more impact than a few p15's.

Yes I can see the doctors rubbing there hands together $$$ this is just plain ridiculous people will be clogging clinics n Hospital to get there migraine pain lowered . stupid :(

Its the nurofen n panadol killing people not codiene why not sell codiene straight ??'

It was an inevitability really, wasn't it? Just like back in the day you could buy pseudo-ephedrine containing products. Even further back all the good stuff was legal, and usually OTC as well. Ho-hum. Nanny-state ideology at it's finest. :(

In Canada it's been getting more strict every year. Used to be able to buy bottles of 200 pills - 8/325 mg, Now Max 1 bottle of 50 tabs 8/ 325 mg per month. AND if your scripted codeine at all you can buy no OTC at all.

They can't. The people in charge have spent a long long time convincing the public that using drugs is wrong, and dealing drugs is about as wrong as it gets. If they sell people codeine it would be the same as dealing drugs in some of the publics mind, and it will spiral out of control from there. Nobody is willing to try it or contemplate it.

I imagine they'll push really hard to reach some kind of compromise - probably in the form of a pseudo-style tracking system. No way the chemists are giving up their codeine income without a fight.

Just like the newsagents fired up recently over the proposal to sell scratchies in servos.

Codeine-related deaths on the rise in Australia

Deaths related to codeine, which soon could be available only on prescription, more than doubled in Australia between 2000 and 2009.

There was a jump from 3.5 to 8.7 per million population, with a 9.3 percent rise each year, say researchers who found the increase mainly driven by accidental deaths.

The second strand of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre study covered the circumstances of 1437 codeine-related deaths from 2000 to 2013.

Almost half were attributed to accidental overdose and a third to intentional self-harm.

The study was published in the Medical Journal of Australia on Monday.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration said on Friday that addiction and other risks posed by codeine products are serious enough to warrant them becoming prescription-only medications.

Codeine is increasingly an abused drug in Australia and it can cause severe adverse reactions and is not as safe as other over-the-counter products.

A final decision will be made in November with a view to moving to prescriptions for products such as Nurofen Plus or Panadeine Extra by June 1 next year at the earliest.

The study used data from the National Coronial Information System, but could only reveal trends up to 2009 because records since are not complete.

But as a "snapshot", most of the deaths from 2000 to 2013 were attributed to multiple drug toxicity.

"Those who had intentionally overdosed were more likely to be older, female and have a history of mental health problems," the researchers said.

"Those who had accidentally overdosed were more likely to have a history of substance use problems, chronic pain and injecting drug use."

The accidental deaths may relate to codeine being used to top up prescribed pain medication, or increasing codeine doses or developing codeine dependence, the researchers said.

Strategies to tackle the problem should include patient education and increasing the capacity of specialist pain, addiction and mental health treatment services.

Whats next anything containing sedating antihistamines Banned?? , this will drive honest people into the dark net to get it..

Well if this does happen I'm gonna be doing harder opiates such as oxy because Im happy doing a CWE on a pack of panadeiene extra and buying over the counter but if I can't do that then I'm gonna have to buy illegal opiates

That's what happened in the US when they cracked down on oxy, sudden spike in heroin sales.

That's the most amusing part of government policy, not just how frequently it doesn't work, but how frequently it does the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do.

Go and get a script if you have a headache because OTC codeine is bad BUT ALSO get rid of short doctor visits and bulk billing because they're also bad.

Anyone who gets migraine can attest codiene say 60mg n nurofen helps reduce pain significantly more than nurofen alone...?So the codiene is not useless or weak but safe and effective .?

It depends entirely on the ailment.
For a lot of migrane sufferers, codeine doesn't cut it - but then again, in severe cases few things do.
I would say that besides the great numbers of relatively informed codeine addicts out there, who cwe and so forth, there are also a great many doing themselves immense harm by necking handfuls of pills with little understanding or concern for the potentially lethal - and certainly damaging - consequences of doing this with any regularity (if at all).
It is for this reason alone that a tighter restriction has long seemed inevitable in Australia. As well as the inconsistency of having easily extracted narcotics available OTC (i am sometimes a bit surprised how cold water extractions are such common knowledge amongst health professionals i speak to.
Sad for lots of us, but as it clearly gets a lot of bluelighters in trouble...i can sort of see both sides of the story.
I guess that just because someone may have had a dependence or compulsion to a drug doesn't mean they want to see it banned, regardless
It is also worth noting that a person suffering a (true) migraine is going to find sitting in a dr's waiting room painful (to say the least) if they can make it in there at all.
And, as migraines are difficult to diagnose, is your average GP going to write up and Rx for opiate meds in that case anyway?
Probably depends from doc to doc, but time will tell, no doubt.

No they will tell u take panadol and lay in a dark room instead of RX some opiod anyday. Cruelty really

^ is panadeine forte still even prescribed? I've been on the stronger opi roundabout for too many yrs to know this now.

I can't even recall if I started this thread, but I know it's been in the pipelines for some time that codeine + para or nurofen is no better than without. According to those without pain..

There's actually a new product "parafen" or some ridiculous cross name of paracetamol & nurofen that pharms are pushing saying it's more effective.

Pure codeine will still be avail of course, but if/when it is removed from pharmacy shelves, I'd actually laugh if a dr tried to prescribe me panadiene forte!!

Such knowledge, such knowledge that most general drs possess.

Rtp

I can see it as somewhat of a good thing. There are hoards of people out there that have no idea they have fucked up their livers from paracetamol toxicity.

Had a pharmacist tell me today that it will be script-only by Jan 1 2016. That said, I in no way take it has gospel, this place has always been harsh on codeine. But still, not great to hear.
