Okay, I need to give a little background on this. I have never had problems sleeping but have been depressed for several years. I have started this year not sure when using codeine, which I extract via cwe from AC&C pills. I live in Canada so aspirin- codeine is readily available otc. i have also only this year been dealing with unrelenting insimnia. I have been on prozac for a couple months but my insomnia has been occuring for longer than my use of an ssri. My codeine use began at a small level when i began experimenting in the under 100 mg area. What is blurred to me is how my dosage naturally upped itself and the frequency with which I used codeine. All i know is that i buy codeine by the 200 bottle (each pill has a crap load o aspirin, 15 mg of cafffeine, and 8 mg of codeine). And my insomnia could possibly coincide with my beginning to use codeine recreationally. Where it gets tricky is that i also had roomate issues and a bunch of other crap I was going through, a stressfull beginning to a new semester, and the fact that the codeone i have been taking has increased dramatically to 400 mg (thats 50 pills), and a shit load of caffeine with all that codeine. Another cause could be that as my codeine dosage has increased so has te frequency, going from once a week (actually, it was probably never that seldom) to at least once per day. For a very long time i disregarded the notion that i could be addicted because it tastes so horrible and it has all that caffeine which seemed to keep me up all night when i was stupid enough to do it at night. So another possible cause of my insomnia could be withdrawl, which (insomnia) is a symptom. I know this is all very disorganized but tell me what you think. Dur to indomnia i have rotated on an off several meds includin lorazepam, clonazepam, and seroquel which i currently take (100mg at least per night). i also wonder if i should tell my doctor as i do not want to be labelled as a drug seeker and ruin my record so its hard to get prescribed stuff later on when i might actually need it, and nor can I see myself actually quitting with the codeine. Is it possible if i told my doctor he could prescribe me something without the caffiene in the interest of harm reduction? Please let me know what all of you think about this situation: i need as much input and support as i can get. Thanks!

Come on guys let me know what you all think i know theres a lot of questions; just answer from your own experience please and thank you

Hi there,

I'm no expert so take what I say with a pinch of salt but surely the insomnia has to be caused/exacerbated by the amount of caffeine you are ingesting. 50 pills at 15mg each is 750mg caffeine per day! That's the equivalent of around five cans of Monster! Is it possible for you to buy codeine linctus over there or another pill preparation that doesn't have caffeine included?

Hope this helps a little, I'm sure one of the more knowledgeable members will add their insights in due course.

All the OTC codeine pills in Canada have either APAP or aspirin and 15mg of caffeine.

OP: Its probably the caffeine content that is causing you insomnia. Telling your Dr will likely get you labeled as an addict and make it very hard to get anything in the future.

Best advice I can give is to pass your CWE liquid though an activated carbon filter (like a britta filter you can buy at supermarket) it will filter out a good deal of the caffeine, while only filtering out a small amount of codeine.

Also, try not to dose near the time you want to go bed. Leave like at least 4 hours between.

If you are not an opiate fan/addict I would opt for ulterior methods of stabilization. Seems like insomnia is your trouble. DOn'r get opiates into it for the quick sleep aid and or benzo's .... It's a world of hurt.

I'll just add that codeine acts like a stimulant in my body. If I were taking that much, even with NO caffeine, I'd be talking up a storm and never sleeping. Are you just taking it for recreation? Or do you need it for other purposes? Also, you are on quite a combo...how do you keep your days and nights straight?

J.D. beat me to it..
I find codeine extremely stimulating also..that combined with the caffeine? I'd never sleep.
I also agree-telling your doctor will probably not work in your favor..although, maybe your dr. would help you get off the codeine..but that doesn't seem like
something you want.
Sounds like what you're taking is no doubt for headache..caffeine works well for that.
What you're looking for isn't a headache remedy, so there is going to be negative consequences.
Sometimes, we all have to deal with those.
Insomnia's a bitch..hope you find what you're looking for!

OP is going through the exact same thing I went through. Both the codeine and the caffeine are causing you insomnia.

You also probably arent getting high off the codeine anymore because after a few weeks of regular use tolerance sets in and the party is over.

Try looking into kratom which is what I did. Thankfully I'm off that codeine junk now forever

Hey Im pretty sure although someone correct me if im wrong, a CWE only works for filtering out any tylenol (APAP) in compounded opiates like codeine, norcos, percocet, etc. I don't think this removes the aspirin, and it definitely does not remove the caffeine.

Find a different form of codeine, one where the only other ingredient is Tylenol.

You're right on caffeine, wrong on aspirin. Aspirin is poorly soluble in H2O

taper down and try to use 20-30 and although it wont be as euphoric, it will allow you to be sedated and maybe even sleep.
