I have this syringe that I got from my friends I left it there a while sure its clean I'm just not taking any chances so I need some help on the proper way to go about cleaning this needle.

Get a new needle. I have no idea why you're considering using a syringe of unknown cleanliness but you should assume the worst.

Take it to the needle exchange and they'll give you a clean needle and HR supplies in return for being a good citizen and not littering your used syringes, as they are a biohazard.

If you are intent on using this needle instead of locating a sterile new syringe, I would highly recommend sanitizing the entire thing with isopropyl alcohol, repeatedly drawing up some alcohol into the barrel of the syringe and shaking it. Make sure to wash your hands before and after, being sure to scrub with anti-bacterial soap for a full 60 seconds.

If you need a reminder as to why you never re-use a needle:

Don't clean needles, they come sterile.

Use hydrogen peroxide or bleach or high pressure steam to disinfect stainless steel things, but since needles come packaged sterile for less than 10 cents, get a new one!

Run bleach through it 3x, then make sure to rinse out all of the bleach.

If youre gonna clean a needle i'd recommend going even further than what tricomb said and using bleach.

Yeah, I used to always recommend IPA&Bleach, until I learned that most people are too dumb to wash out the residue, so I just stopped giving out that advice. But yeah, totally great advice.

I'm deleting my post since apparently you didn't bother to read anyones' advice for you.
So if you don't give a shit I don't either, and I'm not gonna waste my post on you.

Reusing rigs is very bad for your body as everybody else has stated.

Just incase you didn't feel like reading all the posts;

1) used needles tear your veins up fast. No way around this except for a new needle.

2) you are introducing bacteria in your veins Even if you really clean it good. Some bacteria takes a long time to be killed when it is exposed to bleach or alcohol. So you have to let it sit in the solution. I'm sure the rubber plunger rots or degrades in the solution.

3) needles are cheap. Just for peace of mind and your veins plan a head. Next time your out and about go get some for later use.

You only get one set of veins. Treat them right. What if you need them in the future? Medical personel will have a hard time finding veins to give you critical medications on site after an accident. It can mean life and death. Also they are allowed to give pain medications. If I'm in agony I would like a shot of morphine while I'm heading to the hospital 45 min away.

I personally think its a retarded idea to consider using a needle that could possible have been used before. Is a single shot really worth getting hep c or worse? Someone posted a picture of how quickly needles dull, but honestly that is the least of your worries with a used pin.

Go spend $3.19 and buy a 10 pack i mean holy fucking shit. or if your state participates in syringe access programs join one. Here in NJ you can ask for as much as a whole box (100) of pins. I live so close I usually just get 50 and pop in once every few weeks to exchange them. Also, here in NJ pins are not OTC and illegal to posses without a script. Being a member of the exchange allows you to possess the needles (new or used) and paraphanalia such as caps, cottons, etc.

I actually just got charged with possession and they wrote a certified letter to the prosecutor to drop charges. The cop even saw my syringe exchange card but he's like "...if you turn out to actually be a member you'll be fine. but I have a feeling this isn't even your card." The fuckin prick.. but thank god I am a member and fall under that NJ statute other wise id be dealin with additional misdemeanor possession charges.

I cop across the Hudson in NYC mostly, and if I am low on pins I just pop into one of a billion pharmacies and say, "lemme get a pack of 29 guage 1/2" tip 1cc please." I never get so much as a dirty look...actually the Walgreens at union square has the most popular sizes right at the register because so many people buy them.

I just think it would be SUCH a shame to get a lifelong disease because you couldn't just go buy or aquire sterile pins. If you can not legally buy or access pins in your state, check out Amazon for vetrinary syringes or allergy syringes. Both are essentially the same as insulin but the measuring is slightly different which is not important. A while back I ordered a 100pack for $17 of easytouch (which are human syringes just being sold as animal to get around the law I guess) off a seller on Amazon and he had no issue shipping to NJ with no script.

I think it's utterly disgusting people have to jump through hoops to buy $0.30 needles when it is proven time after time to reduce the spread of bloodborn illnesses from needle sharing.

Also, using a new pin for EVERY injection results in very minimal trauma to the body/veins. It's amazing how different the puncture feels with a pin that is used even as little as 3 times. Thinner guage dull more quickly too.

If I were to share my pin with someone, this is what I would do. I think this is the best way to clean a pin because it works like an autoclave, which is used to sterilize medical equipment etc... You want to STERILIZE, not clean by the way.. bleach doesnt kill everything. Cells are small god only knows what is left in that pin. This plan only works if you have a pressure cooker.. I used to grow shrooms so I have one sitting around. You can get them cheap.

Run your pressure cooker with the 15 psi weight on it, run it for 20 minutes. The steam reaches 250F which is what an autoclave runs at, and th is WILL sterilize. Boiling needles in water is not sufficient for sterilization, nor is soaking in alcohol, since these methods do not destroy resistant bacterial spores or certain viruses. I did find this about bleach in regards to HIV, it was found to kill the virus. Keep in mind some are more resistant than HIV I think though.

This topic should be renamed to the many reasons why not to clean and reuse a needle. It is just a bad idea.

i mean i can't be a hyprocrit and say i haven't resued a needle but comeon man its gotten to the point that if i can't get a rig id rather just sniff and and stay well then get retarded high from the rig. can't emphisise it enough man, take care of your body and know what your putting into your veins.

Jesus I didn't realize I was the only one on bl who would ever think of such a thing. I never re use needles and normally have a couple on stand by. I just figured since I was at my friends house where I was aware I had a needle from a couple days ago in which I was almost positive no one had used, just being cautious and wanting to ask about cleaning it to be just that much safer was that much of a deal. Thanks for the info, I've learned more than ever as to why I should not re use a syringe, just wanting some advice to clean my clean needle.
