I want to know everyone's opinions on this guy, in light of the $30,000 fine he just received for the sombrero celebration (also, his slew of other incidents, of course)...

Personally, I enjoy Chad Ochocinco and his antics . The sombrero cracked me up when I saw it, and neither that nor incidents like the Lambeau leap were overboard in my opinion, not by a long shot. I think that fining someone that is really only improving the game's image is certainly counterproductive. I think the sport should be more focused on trying to combat the blatant violence issues (for example, stompings or eye-gougings) than a little fun expression. What do you think?

(Yes, I know the eye-gouging was involving a NCAA player, but I'm just speaking to football's overall image.)

Agreed

Chad's celebrations are all done in a light heartened manner....Its nothing about offending any player or anyone....Nothing Unsportsman-like

He's definitely not the same type of Diva as Terrell Owens or some other wide receivers, he's more of a total class clown. I think he's cool. There's a general lack of personality in most NFL players these days. He's a saving grace.

The only person who doesn't like Ochocinco is Roger Goodell. That guy is a serious prick with an entire California Redwood up his ass.

Chad trying to bribe the ref a dollar for the call to go his way was hilarious.

meh, I don't care for him as a diehard Steelers fan. I don't really mind his elaborate celebrations, becuase again as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, we are so tied up in being old-school badasses that the players don't celebrate often. I think it's fun. I would probably dislike him more if he ever actually did much damage to the Black and Gold when the Bengals play them, but he usually has a rather quiet day.

I think his name change is freakin' stupid, though.

i think its so ridiculous that the NFL would fine him 30K for putting on a fucking hat.
he is simply trying to lighten the current sports world and have a little fun.

and bribery for handing the ref a dollar...FIFTY THOUSAND for that?! lighten the fuck up NFL.

i was having a very similar conversation tonight with a buddy of mine. typically i don't get all hot on the showboaters as i'm somewhat of an oldschooler when it comes to sports. i believe in being respectful and acting like you've been there before. that said, i DO like ochocinco and his antics. i've seen many an interview with him, lengthy interviews, post game locker room interviews, etc. i feel like i know the guy personally (though i don't) and i get him. he's definitely not in it to antagonize, he's in it to have fun. you ask most of the guys in the NFL and they enjoy him and his antics. there are divas who just bitch and moan when things don't go their way (TO is again a great example) then there are 'diva's' who bitch and moan for comedic value. ochocinco to me has the best intentions. yeah he's a bit in it for himself, but he's a team player who just enjoys adding that extra flare because he loves the game of football and he has no problem taking advantage of the position that he's in... playing professional football on the greatest stage on earth.

Love him. He's my favorite player in the NFL. And it helps that he plays for my favorite team too!

But the NFl is stupid for fining people for celebrations. What is the big deal? It's entertaining, and it's not as if Chad does anything that's in bad sportsmanship. He thinks of clever antics to entertain the fans. I think he should be commended for it, not fined.

But hey, if Chad knows he's going to get fined and doesn't care, more power to him! He just makes Goodell look like more of a prick with each weekly fine!

Bengal Nation loves ya Chad!!!! And we'd love to see you one day retire in Cincinnati!

he's going to make that $30k back in a heartbeat...free advertising in the limelight...etc. etc.

chad's persona is as profitable or more than his athletic ability. he's more than just a football player.

Goodell's bullshit fining antics are definitely going to help push the lockout along. The players are really unhappy with all of his bullshit.

Yeah but it's the Steelers trying to keep his day quiet that allows Benson and the others to go wild on them, so he contributes even when he's not.

Yeah Ochocinco isn't even how you say 85 in Spanish, which I think adds to the funniness. You can't blame him for wanting a name change as there must be thousands of "Johnson"s in the NFL anyway.

^I think it's supposed to say "eight five", like if you were looking at the numbers themselves.

He has a "Ragnar's Horn" on hand for today's game at the Vikings, I really hope he scores and we get to see it!

I'm waiting for him to bring a horse to a game and ride it around after a TD. Give him a three point conversion if he can make the horse shit on the 50 yard line:D
His stunts are extremely creative and in good sport, he's all right in my book.
Apparently his work ethic is untouchable too, it's not like his off/on the field antics are getting in the way of his game.

well it looks like i'm something of a lone voice here. i think he's a dick.

football is a team game and he makes everything about him. he's a professional and he acts in a most unprofessional manner. the guy in taco bell doesn't pull some lame stunt when he gets my order right. there are many players in the nfl who do a better job than 85 and don't feel the need to celebrate themselves as overtly as he does.

alasdair

What's the point of football being all serious macho straight-laced etc.? If I'm watching TV I'd like to be entertained and given some lulz. He's still a team player, but he's a wide receiver. They are expected to be egotistical. At least he's a goof off in the process.

Are you Skip Bayless?
