Canberra Bushfires

That footage is incredible... While the 'threat' is over for now. Bad weather is forecast for the weekend. And according to experts if it were to rain (due to the canberra water supply being up in the mountains) we would face level 5 water restrictions... I just hope things dont get any worse here (although i wasnt directly affected, plenty of ppl my sister knows had their house burn down) :(

After seeing the movie Bowling For Columine last night, does anyone else think that the exposure in the press is what is attracting these deliberately lit fires. I seriously believe that the media attention is only given those would be arsonists the fuel they need.

Haven't seen the movie but according the beaureu of meteorology (yeah yeah i cant spell) has said that most of the fires were started by lightning and embers from the initial fire fronts. Although with recent media reporting quite a few fires have been started by low life firebugs -- Evident in that a few here in canberra have been arrested.
So to answer your question the media should be accountable for sensationlist reporting.

yeah what he said. these fires started about 10 days before the devastation last saturday in canberra. they started from lightning strikes out in the brindabella ranges.
but that said arsonists are absolute scum.

Re: the whole phone/mobile thing..I werk for Telstra...
All we know is there *has* been extensive damage to phone lines/bass stations from the effects of the fires.
PLEASE if you have *any* enquiry relating to a loved one/friend/family member who may be in the vicinity of the fires, please call the numbers already posted.
All we can do in the call centres is pass your call through to them, and our lines are clogged as it is (some of you would now, to reach 125-111 there has been a wait of up to 30minutes these past weeks).
Just thought I'd mention that...Hope it helps someone.
GOOD LUCK to all involved...I can only wish and hope that they don't spread. :(
