Canberra Bushfires

Well Mocha, Mean Girl and myself are all fine. Our house is one of the lucky ones, being on the north side of the city. The only little worry we had is that there is large patches of bushland pretty close to our back door, and if that had of gone up we could have been in trouble too.
My parents house is in Kambah, near the base of the Urambi hills which went up sometime on Friday morning. It's fine, thank goodness. It looks like the house I was born in over in Duffy burned to the ground though.
My thoughts go out to everyone involved, but glad to hear that it looks like Bluelighters didn't get seriously affected.

MDMA-4-ALL (And fingers crossed for us)

Sending my love to everyone affected...I can't imagine how fucking scary this all must be.

As best as I can find out everyone is still ok. I've just finished preparing our house, starting to pack the things we can't replace (photos, going to put the PC boxes in the car, etc...) and now just sit back and wait.

MDMA-4-ALL (And a bit of a scary day for me)

North CBR is on High Fire Alert right as we speak(12pm). That means most of CBRs BLers!!!
I'm thinking of heading home to help my family. Fingers crossed for the next few hours as conditions worsen in CBR.

Talk about a close shave. Check out my gf's place Here
The fires took out every house in the street except for hers and their neighbour.
We were there until 5 mins before the fireball front came through.

What a terrible weekend, i am just hoping it doesn't get worse today. My best wishes to all those in the northern suburbs that are under threat today. I am one of the lucky lucky ones that lives in the city, probably the safest place to be at the moment.
Good luck everyone.

Hope I haven't spoken too soon (it's 7:30pm Tues) but it looks like, touch wood, us northsiders are safe for tonight. Thank god the predicted winds didn't pick up
From here in Ngunnawal I have a great view of the choppers taking off from Nicholls, flying straight over my house. They have been going every 5 mins for the last half an hour.

anybody who keeps in touch with the cbr BLers, or the cbr guys themselves, can you (if possible) please keep us updated on how you guys are.
We've got loads of friends in that area and we're all worried that you're ok.

i just wanted 2 say that my thoughts and prayers are with everyone at this time and i hope things work out ok 4 everyone :(
:)

As far as I am aware all CBR bluelighters are fine as of wed morning. Nick the cheese is also ok.
We are just waiting to see what the weather is going to be like today.
You realise something has changed when you hear a siren and you panic for an instant, before realising it's the cops not the fire brigade.
A convoy of about 12 fire trucks from Queensland were driving down Northbourne 5pm tuesday afternoon, a reassuring sight.

As Mocha said, we are all ok for now. My suburbs has been taken off alert for now, and we are just waiting to see. Apparently the containment lines are holding at the moment, and we are praying the weather stays good. It's still a little scary, but we just have to wait and see now.

MDMA-4-ALL (And another tense day for us)

Hey I live in Weston Creek – one of the areas worst hit by the fires.
Saturday is one of the most frantic and surreal experiences I have ever lived through. The sky over us went from black as though it was night (3-4ish on Sat arvo) to fire red and we knew that we were in trouble. Our animals were freaking out, we could hear, smell and taste fire. We could hear explosions as the electricity sub-stations blew up. People were running up and down the street offering assistance to neighbours with watering things down. I packed a bag and got ready to leave – funny the things you pack – I remembered our birth certificates and wedding certificates – but no clean underwear?!
We lost power early on Sat afternoon and it didn’t come back until Monday morning – we still have no gas. We didn’t get much sleep all weekend – keeping an eye out for spot fires etc. I know so many people who have lost their homes and pets – it is just devastating.
My poor dad has been battling fires in Namadgi and around my parent’s property in Brindabella for over two weeks now and will be there for at least another week – I can only imagine how tired and shocked he must be by what he has experienced. Not to mention the added worry about his family when he heard about the problems in Canberra on the weekend.
Until now when I have seen a disaster on TV, I always thought “Gee isn’t that terrible” but never really understood the impact it had on those affected. Having got through last Saturday and dealt with such things in person – I think that I will be feeling a lot more compassion for others.
To all those other b’lers in Canberra, keep your chins up and my fingers are crossed that you won’t have to go through what we did over the weekend. To everyone else who has sent best wishes – thank you.

Here is first-hand footage from a channel 9 cameraman taken on the Saturday afternoon. I can't even being to imagine what it would have been like to be caught in the middle of this.
