Phenobarbital (S4 and disliked by many) and butalbital (S3 and always combined with junk) are the only two barbiturates left, in the U.S., that are still in take-home products. An online compounding pharmacy sells a pure butalbital elixir.

I just searched secobarbital, amobarbital, and butabarbital (S3) on ndclist.com. I got up-to-date results for all of them, specifically, the powders—the retail products had "discontinued" notices.

… Compounding pharmacies can order those powders and make pills from them, no? Is there anything preventing a rogue doctor from writing such a prescription?

The Manufacturers started to slowly pull away from Barbiturates in the late 70's and throught the 80's. By the 90's there were werent many left with Seconal being one of the last ones to be discontinued.

Prices for Seconal SKYROCKETED in the 2010's to over $1000 for 30 tabs.

Phenobarbital is the worst example of a barbiturate if you're trying to get recreational effects out of it. When people talk about barbiturate abuse they are almost always referring to the barbs that used to be sold as fast acting sedatives/anxiolytics like amobarbital and secobarbital (Amytal, Seconal, Nembutal, Tuinal, etc). Those are quite a bit more powerful than benzodiazepines for sure.

Yes they prescribe phenobarbital for epilepsy, and a medication called Primidone is a barbiturate which metabolizes into its active metabolite, phenobarbital, and primidone is unscheduled in the US even though its prescribed here and FDA approved for essential tremor, which its often prescribed for. I think that a lot of barbiturates are schedule III iirc.

I'm prescribed Donnatal here in the states it contains 16.2mg Phenobarbital w/Hyoscyamine Sulfate 0.1037mg, Atropine Sulfate 0.0194mg and Scopolamine Hydrobromide 0.0065mg for stomach problems. Take 1 or 2 three x day. I'm also prescribed Clonazepam 1mg qid, Gabapentin 800mg tid and Hydrocodone 7.5/325 tid along with Dextroamphetamine 15mg bid. The Phenobarbital is not scheduled. In the early 1980's I was prescribed Seconal 1.5 grains tid and Quaalude 300mg bedtime. When Xanax really came on the scene my MD switched me over. Quaalude was phased out so he prescribed Placidyl 700mg (?). 1mg Xanax is supposed to be equal to 1.5 grain of Seconal but I disagree. Mainly, because benzodiazepines come to the receptors and knock. Seconal came to the receptors and kicked the doors in. Very difficult to withdraw from. It's all fun and games until the doctor stops writing. Regards

Yeah, I'm not sure they still make them. There were the red ones that were 350mg and the green monsters were 750mg. Poke a hole and squeeze the liquid out. I haven't heard of them in the states since the mid 80's.

like yeah its legal and sometimes does happen but its unlikely and you might damage your reputation from your doctor if you ask for barbituates
Yeah, most doctors here in the states have gone waaay too far withholding medication. I would never even hint at almost any medication for fear of getting on the black list

Old prescribing practices versus today's

No one answered my question: can schedule 2 barbiturates still be prescribed? All of the take-home products have been discontinued, but they're still being manufactured for anesthesia, euthanizing animals, and lethal injection. However, a compounding pharmacy is a pharmacy that makes custom medications, for example if a doctor wanted to treat someone to butalbital w/o the caffeine, Tylenol, or Aspirin, he could utilize a compounding pharmacy, which would order butalbital powder.

what does black list mean? can doctors kick you out for being a drug seeker
Short answer, no. That would be abandonment. I have gotten 2 letters in my lifetime from 2 different doctors saying "You are being dismissed from our practice because" one practice said I was verbally abusive which was a complete lie. I have COPD and it was at a Pulmonary specialist and they had given me some cough syrup with a small amount of Codeine. When I finished that bottle I called back I just mentioned if they could prescribe something with Hydrocodone in it as the Codeine wasn't strong enough. I got a no and they didn't call anything else in. Then the letter "Dismissed from our practice, we will continue to be your provider for 30 days etc. The other one was my fault unintentionally 20 years ago I was getting Ativan from psychiatrist. My primary wrote me a prescription for Restoril and pharmacy called my psychiatrist and I was dropped. I live in Tennessee and one HUGE company runs everything. All the doctors can see what is written in my file. I said "blacklisted" that was a misnomer in a way. It's just everybody in medical community knows your business. Sucks

Phenobarbital would be the only one that would be prescribed these days.

Seconal is still produced etc, I am sure you know that (hospital environment etc), but actual take home prescriptions?

Phenobarbital is last man standing.

Hope that answered a bit of your question ☺️

In the context of all countries yes, but locally Butalbital isn't on the market where I am.
However, Meprobamate in combo with Codeine/Paracetamol is, and IME is very effective when used correctly or on the odd occasion for relaxation and chilling.
It is in the same class as the benzos and when prescribed Docs would only give a minimal amount for purpose.

The barbs prescribed (only the one) is like comparing Diphenhydramine to Temazepam - The anti histamine being the "butalbital" and the Stilpane the Temaz.

All the above is subjective obviously, but even if offered Butalbital or Phenobarbital, I would actually choose to buy OTC codeine at normal doses. (this is recreationally speaking as I don't have a reason to be prescribed the current Barbs).
Oh and Phenobarbital is actually a lower scheduling status then the benzos etc. (same level as anti-biotics, cortisone etc, so scripts can be repeatable for as long as the doc wants to issue it. Whereas the benzos/meprobamate schedule status is stricter and 3 months is considered "generous".

If one actually needs the current barbs (alcohol detox etc), then that is a different story.

Long waffling but hope the info is helpful.

😇

Im going to guess they stopped prescribing them cause of all thre deaths. Benzos came along, did the same thing and cant kill yu.
