Phenobarbital (S4 and disliked by many) and butalbital (S3 and always combined with junk) are the only two barbiturates left, in the U.S., that are still in take-home products. An online compounding pharmacy sells a pure butalbital elixir.
I just searched secobarbital, amobarbital, and butabarbital (S3) on ndclist.com. I got up-to-date results for all of them, specifically, the powders—the retail products had "discontinued" notices.
… Compounding pharmacies can order those powders and make pills from them, no? Is there anything preventing a rogue doctor from writing such a prescription?
The Manufacturers started to slowly pull away from Barbiturates in the late 70's and throught the 80's. By the 90's there were werent many left with Seconal being one of the last ones to be discontinued.
Prices for Seconal SKYROCKETED in the 2010's to over $1000 for 30 tabs.

Phenobarbital is the worst example of a barbiturate if you're trying to get recreational effects out of it. When people talk about barbiturate abuse they are almost always referring to the barbs that used to be sold as fast acting sedatives/anxiolytics like amobarbital and secobarbital (Amytal, Seconal, Nembutal, Tuinal, etc). Those are quite a bit more powerful than benzodiazepines for sure.
